  1. Use the method described here and it's not hard to figure it out yourself. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mp;hl=icon+view
  2. Can you access your website with IP? Is it in your hosts file? MSFN is not affiliated with Microsoft.
  3. Could be printer driver problem ... In the meantime, I suppose you can stop the service more quickly with a simple script on the desktop. Don't you just love factory laptops - you call them and they say it's Windows problem. Call MS and they say they don't support OEMs.
  4. The title says: but the content says: OE settings - use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard Modem - Just set it up again Programs - possible but not easy to transfer If the loaded XP Pro is illegal, chances are the loaded programs are also...
  5. It really depends on the exact registry keys. If the keys have CLSIDs then they need to be modified. Settings and registration keys can usually be imported. It's a matter of trial and error and common sense really.
  6. Thanks, but Sonic said thumbnail is not to blame. So you're saying it is thumbnail afterall?
  7. The card has S-video out and the TV has S-video in so why use RCA to S-video adaptor? The manual says turn on TV, then turn on computer. With TV out, the max. resolution is 1024x768.
  8. So your desktop has wired connection to router, another wired connection to dockstation and a wireless USB stick, all bridged? When internet is down on laptop, is it also down on the desktop? I've not used bridging before but I'm inclined to agree with what rendrag says.
  9. I'm not convinced that modifying HIVESYS will stop WMP or some other programs from rewriting to the All programs menu.
  10. They're just folders and shortcuts (lnk) and you could try moving them at the end of setup with a script to you desired location and deleting the original. This would be simpler than modifying the default hiv. Normally these are in All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories. Just suggestions...
  11. Please explain in what way is this much safer? Just wondering...
  12. The boot files (boot.ini, ntldr, NTDETECT.COM) must reside on the first active primary partition on the first available physical HD. If you hide the 1st HD, then those files must be present on the 2nd HD. MS has many KB articles on boot.ini. Well worth a look.
  13. How does all of that essay specifically answer the poster's question? He specifically ask to remove a service, presumably from a third party firewall and not fine tuning XP's own. I'd have a look at the HKLM key for the service, try to find the dll and remove it manually, then the key entry. What firewall is that BTW that leaves such thing behind?
  14. Look here and here.
  15. What make of wireless router? Firmware up to date? Have you tried without WEP (for testing)? Any setting on WAN filter?
  16. Nero usually says what's happened and has a log. If the HD is not sending enough data to keep up with the burn speed, surely it'd make sense to reduce the burn speed. That's my logic anyway. Other thoughts: HD controller, fragmentation, memory...
  17. No, no Then it's not CDROM boot problem. The CD is booting. Something to do with the way you made the installation source.
  18. Yes you can hide this and that, or set policy (n/a in XP HE) but nothing is absolutely foolproof. Kids are smart and sooner and later they'll find their way to overcome whatever you do. For a start, blanking/resetting the admin password is sooooo easy. Having a dual boot system is easy to implement and giving the kids limited user accounts would be appropriate. Set appropriate folder permissions and have a good backup strategy. The average home user can manage all these. The more complicated you make it, the higher the chance of something would go wrong. You might want to consider this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sharedaccess/default.mspx
  19. Then I'm not sure. I have four entries in mine and they match those seen in the 2nd key and in Network Connections. You might want to try this: if you have a NIC installed, search the registry for local area connection (or whatever), then find the CLSID and see what shows.
  20. Either you didn't do it right or the BIOS boot order is incorrect. Check them carefully.
  21. I thought I gave you enough clues to have a look. Have a look at the subkeys. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Setup\InterfacesUnfirewalledAtUpdate I think with FW on the DWORD for each adaptor is 1. Then identify the CLSID using the 2nd key. I can't give you every bit of info as it varies from computer to computer.
  22. Have a look: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Setup HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network
  23. I use Nero 6.3 + Pioneer 111D and haven't had any problems burning DVD data or video. But the PC doesn't do anything else while burning and only burns at the lowest speed x1. Sometimes it's DMA or media problem when things go wrong.
  24. Qu1: Yes of course. But Qu2: XP using FAT32 CAN see XP NTFS partitions. Only Win9x FAT32 canNOT see XP NTFS.
  25. People say you can uninstall IE7 from Add/Remove Prog: http://forums.microsoft.com/Communities/Sh...06&SiteID=6 If you've messed it up, you could reinstall IE7 and then try to uninstall it. Just suggestions, as I'm not interested in IE7...
