  1. Like this? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=528915
  2. You cannot delete the built-in Administrator account. If you want to rename it you have to use other methods. New user with no password: Look here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...;hl=passwordreq
  3. In Explorer, using XP style interface, in the L pane, there is a Make a new folder option under File and Folder Tasks. I use this feature as it's only one click as opposed to the other methods.
  4. Is it there in diskmgmt.msc? I'd search the registry more thoroughly with the letter Z.
  5. Just hang on, I don't think Windows XP lets you set different screen resolution or freq for different users, because some users actually want to do this and find they cannot. These are per computer settings. So something else is going on.
  6. Lets keep it simple. In regedit, the HKCU hive is mapped to one of the HKU\S-1-5-21-SID hives. So if you use the HKCU hive for exporting and importing, you won't have to worry about the user specific SID. As for prog CLSIDs, I think they usually use the same. The easy way to find out is to install the same prog to two different computers and compare the registry keys. As I said before, settings and registration keys can usually be imported without difficulty.
  7. I'd create a new account and see what happens. If it loads normally then it's the user profile corrupt problem. If it doesn't then it's more likely to be a generalised problem. Try to have a systematic approach and narrow down the possible causes by exclusion. Don't just rush in and guess this and that at random.
  8. e.g. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mp;hl=autologon But if there's only one user account then it should autologon anyway.
  9. A normal Setup still asks you WHERE to install Windows first. The repair option comes up after you accept the EULA.
  10. Yes I agree with the above comments, very well said. Avoid setting Deny permissions if at all possible and keep everything as simple as possible. I don't quite follow the rationale of only having Everyone (Allowed Full Control) in the Advanced Security settings.
  11. Not ALL folders have CLSIDs, usually only special/shell folders that come with Windows.
  12. HAL = hardware abstraction layer Factory is used for testing including installation of extra stuff before the final reseal and delivery to end-users. If you're interested in the subject, read up more (a lot more...) and do it yourself, on a real PC, or virtual PC/VMWare.
  13. I forget what it is but the Linksys manual tells you how to set it up and the default password. It's really quite easy. Have you read it? The other things is, if you use XP, you don't need to use Linksys' wireless utility.
  14. IE7 stuff should be in Beta > IE forum: Microsoft Beta Discussion
  15. What I actually meant was if programs write to your user specific reg keys (those with unique user SIDs) then they need to be changed when transplanted. Programs might well bring their own CLSIDs but it's possible that Windows may generate more.
  16. Even if MS UK is open 24h, the Royal Mail is not.
  17. There's no definitive answer to your question, because you didn't say if XP came slipstreamed with SP2 or you installed SP2 yourself. Trying to uninstall SP2 when it looks like Windows is all screwed up is not really the most sensible, logical or systematic approach. MS is stopping support to XP SP1 in October, for your information. BTW, if you manually installed SP2 and chose the option to uninstall, then it does appear in Add or Remove Programs.
  18. A: Yes A: No, but it must have compatible HAL. A: More or less, + network install... A: I think so but you don't have to start it yourself. A: Factory (command: -factory) - for configurating and repeated restarting in a factory . It restarts in a network-enabled mode without running Windows Welcome or Mini-Setup and enables drivers, devices and programmes to be installed. Sysprep is a big subject. MS has tens of KB on this alone, + TechNet, MCSE books...
  19. Now I understand better what you were trying to say. Every user account's user profile has its own ntuser.dat and what you said about HKCU is essentially true. However, you assume the "registry" is a static entity and that is a rather narrow view of it. Even though it loads only one user profile (the current user who is logged on), it doesn't necessarily mean that the user profile is not part of it. I look at it this way, all the ntsuer.dat files are part of the registry but at one time, only one is shown in the registry editor. It's a bit like all the clothes in your closet is yours but at any one time, you only wear one set of clothes. Even the HKLM hive is not static, it changes with every logon session. So by the same token, only the part that doesn't change should be regarded as the registry? In all the written documentation on the subject that I've read, the registry consists of HKCU and HKLM hives.
  20. Don't know what you're trying to prove. Would you kindly explain then what is considered to belong to the registry?
  21. All-in-one system maintenance apps are for newbies. As your level of expertise increases you'd want to DIY. These apps in general do not cater for malware prevention, so any discussion on malware is a bit off-topic really. I agree with the comments on registry tools.
  22. It'd be far simpler and less frustrating to get a wireless router. B)
  23. NTUSER.DAT is part of the registry! I think you were trying to save the default user profile...
  24. Use iso directly, not CD. Some used to say VMWare is faster than VPC, the older versions anyway. The above reply can also be a "better" method, apart from speed, but I hate using factory machines for testing because of drivers.
