Since you're such a n00b I'd recommend StyleXP. Using the UXThemePatcher is for experienced guys only who know what they're doing

Homer, you worry too much, you're a bit paranoid about these tools and themes. None of these utilities affect windows system files, even if it did - Windows File Protection would alert you and ask you to put the WinXP CD in to restore the modified files. Also these programs run in a seperate memory space, so if it crashes, it doesn't affect the OS. That's the beauty of NT Operating Systems! (NT4, Win2k, XP)

Looks great Zero! Everyone's Case modding lately, maybe I should do it soon... real soon

Its one of those mysterious strange things that Windows likes to do every now and then. "Windows works in mysterious ways"

no, it won't bugger your PC up. Some themes also slow your PC down slightly, depending on how graphical it is. It won't affect your internet connection whatsoever. I recommend the hacked UXTheme dll file for anyone not wanting to buy StylesXP, or not needing such bloated software to change a theme. StylesXP and the hacked UXTheme dll file do very much the same thing to allow themes in WindowsXP.

What's your IDE setup? I can transfer about 600mb from one drive to another in about 40 seconds or so. I can't do on-the-fly CD copying from dvd drive to cdrw, because of the same ide cable its on, but not a major loss. What's your IDE Setup and how does it benefit you?

Good for you wave. everyone has a personal favourite, and X-Setup is mine. TweakXP did no good but slowed my system down a bit.
-
you had to restore back to three weeks? why? AFAIK, System restore makes a restore point every day, so you should have been able to restore it to the last time you used your computer (1 week ago)
-
Looks like a bit of a TweakXP clone to me, judging from the screenshot. And TweakXP is CRAP. Period. X-Setup proves to be the best advanced tweaker around, thousand of tweaks you can apply to all versions of Windows. http://www.xteq.com

There's also Kazaalite.com for the ones who are completely against spyware.

yes, but would it pump out enough power to power 2 PCs? You think it would be 7 mins if it was divided, but enough wattage to do so?
-
I believe the root of this problem is cos of an update utility I used called Bigfix (which checks your computer for software and security updates) There was one fixlet about Restricting Anonymous Enumeration, and suggested to change this value in the registry to 1. I allowed BigFix to make this change. And did this a couple of months ago. This is probably why my computers on the network request a password to access shares. I'm gonna change back the number to 0, and see if it made a difference.

Right, just had a 2 minute powercut 5 mins ago. I need to buy an UPS I've looked in a lot of computer catalogues selling UPS, but I'm still confused by them and don't exactly tell you how many computers it can support etc. What kind of UPS do I need to power two of my workstation machines? Check my PC specs for an idea on wattage. I need a reliable brand too, was told to avoid APC models at all costs.

nah, its D&D, its probably more complicated than Dungeon Seige, like Baldur's Gate or something. Now anyone up for a game of Warcraft 3?

To add, I've had experience that formatting the second hard drive as a complete primary partition will usually force it to D:\, and all the extended logical partitions (on first and second hard drives) come after D:\ I couldn't change the drive letter at all in a previous sceneario, to make the primary partition letter come after a logical letter. But now I was able to with a new HDD i bought a couple of days ago

Yeah Xit, we know what you mean, use Partition Magic 7 (on Both OSs!) to change the drive letters if Computer Management is being a b***h. You don't have to use it to partititon your drives.

This latest version of DirectX offers updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also offers more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation, and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 8.1 will overwrite any earlier versions. DirectX 8.1 provides the latest update to the DirectX technology. DirectX 8.1 will ensure trouble-free installation and includes the latest USB game controller updates in addition to the features provided by DirectX 8.0. Note: After installation, the DirectX 8.1 run time cannot be uninstalled. DirectX is a system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system. Note: Users of Windows XP do not need to install DirectX 8.1. DirectX 8.1 is included in the Windows XP operating system. Changes in Current Version: Modifies kernel component stream.sys to correct failure of laptops to resume from hibernation as described in Knowledge Base article Q307207. This fix only affects Windows 2000 systems using a docking station having an attached USB camera Fixes a blocking issue in quartz.dll on Windows 2000 when running DirectShow in a service Corrects a boundary case in the MPEG-2 Demultiplexer where packets may be dropped Fixes Direct3D-base screen savers, when the computer may be unable to enter standby or hibernation by using the timer in Power Management properties Fixes some recent game titles that use DrawIndexedPrimitive() API with clipped TL vertices Fixes flashing polygons/lines issues in some applications that used DirectX 8.0 DrawPrim(), DrawClippedPrim, DrawIndexedPrim() APIs DirectX 8.1b for Windows 9x/ME DirectX 8.1b for Windows 2000

I recommend putting the mail folder on another drive/partition. Let's say, you have the OS on C:\ and you have a drive or partition on D:\ for backup/storage purposes. Create a new folder on D:\ called Mail Storage or something, place all your mail and newsgroup folders and files in there. Whenver you've cleanly formatted C:\ and installed Windows, you can open up OE (it will have no mails) Go to the Options > Maintenance > Store Folder > and then change to D:\Mail Sorage\ and OK it. Restart OE. Magically all your mail and newsgroups will appear, without any backing up or restoring done. Bad side is.. you need advanced backup utilities to backup the message rules and blocked senders list. Use what Blackwar recommended.

right, ya know MSN 4.6, the bloated s*** as it is, and the stupid scrollbar bug thats present in chat windows (only some blind people don't notice it). I've been using MSN 3.6.0038 in Win2k and still do. Now since I've connected my XP machine for the first time to the net a few days ago, I removed MSN 4.6 with the Run Command: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove rebooted, then installed MSNM 3.6 and it worked (never expected it to though!) So now I'm happy! :assshake to Microsoft
