Very rare for me to start a new thread and tell my XP problems, here are the various problems I've collected over the past months: I bought an Epson Stylus C60 printer last year and since then its always lost the connection to my PC, faulty USB port or bad drivers. Just now I've found drivers which are XP compatible, so I'm going to try them out next wednesday when I get back on my XP machine. Another problem I've had is that the keyboard sometimes loses the connection to the PC. I have to take it out of the PS/2 port then put it back in. No reboot needed, it works fine after. hrm... its only a basic cheap £20 multimedia keyboard. And... another problem you may have known about long ago: http://www.msfn.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1622 and more detail at: http://www.iexbeta.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/i...ST;f=13;t=11142 I've come to the conclusion that since the USB, PS/2 ports, and the graphics slot is all linked to the motherboard, I think I may have a faulty motheboard. I remember that when I first bought the PC, the network card f**ked up, so I took it out to replace with another. My mistake was that I took it out when the power cable was still in, and it powered up my machine when I was taking the bad NIC out. This could have damaged the mobo in someway. Any ideas guys? oh, and why the hell am I getting a crappy font in the Help and Support Center only, and a nice lucida sans console font everywhere else? You haven't got Kazaa installed by any chance? The spyware it contains ('Brilliant something') can turn on your PC, from what I've heard. If you have, remove it, and use Kazaalite instead at kazaalite.com

If yo want to send files to your kids on the internet, then you all should use an Instant Messenger program such as MSN Messenger or ICQ, which supports file transfer. Or set up an FTP Server for them to access with BulletProof FTP Server 2.15

OE is a b***h to backup heheh! As well as http://www.outlook-express-backup.com which someone else suggested. Here's another, looks more simpler! http://www.abfsoftware.com/products/OEBackup/index.html but, *ahem* no fix for it.

Some IP Routing needs to be configured in your NAT software or Hardware Router. But I don't know how. Check www.PraticallyNetworked.com

What AntiVirus software are you currently using, does it not clear out the infected files in C:_RESTORETEMP ? Basic Windows folder sharing, or using a LAN messenger that can send files (via UDP) seems to be the fastest way. The only way I've found to squeeze the most out of my 100mbit network is to send files via Vypress Messenger, reaching a peak of 9mb/sec to 11mb/sec If that wasn't what you're talking about, and you wanted a P2P client for swapping files with 50 or so users on your LAN, then get a program called Lanster. Its pretty good.

erk, looks like I will have to close this account anyway, its getting too much spam already. Next time I will register a very long email address at hotmail, with a long combination of letters and numbers. This lessens the spam and spammers can't guess the email address. e.g. Aaron_2343_XP_9376_l33t@hotmail.com - something like that lol Everyone else should do the same

"no other drive will unless it's a burner" - my other drive was not a burner, nor a dvd drive. just a bog standard 8X CD-ROM Reader.

Erm, that only resets to the default home page and default search engine. I don't see how this repairs IE and replaces all the files (with good versions) that IE relies on?

Is there a fix for the slow Win XP and Win 98 networking?
Aaron replied to Jonny K's topic in Windows XP
Thats for windows 2000 only. Not win98? -
probably the USB modem causing the crashing, try routing your internet connection from another PC to yours via NAT/ICS software, and play starcraft again, so you don't have to use the USB Modem on your PC. btw, no matter how much you defrag or not, it doesn't cause PC problems or fix them for that matter.

Change Product Key without Reinstall: 1. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_MachineSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrent VersionWPAEvents, on the right double click on "oobetimer" and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows. 2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command: %systemroot%system32oobemsoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen and go to the second option which is activate by phone. 3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key (Corporate one only). 4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 2 for the second time to verify your activation , you should see "windows is already activated".

cableghost - Are you using a creative labs sound blaster card?

If you've just upgraded to XP, rather than clean install, you probably need to re-install most applications and games that don't work. You should also check the Diablo II website for any latest patches they may have released for Windows XP compatibility.

Unlikely defrag makes a difference in all this fthrjack! uschie, if services are not found and programs are freezing, then you probably have bad sectors on your hard drive. Lost data on the hard disk even when the uninstall info for those apps and services still lie somewhere else on your hard disk. If you know your hard drive manufacturer, go to their site and download their diagnostics apps. Chances are they're DOS apps, so make a bootable floppy and copy the app over to it, and then reboot and run.

Someone needs to make an HTML Help file with all this in it so it can be read offline. Or I'll do it if I get the time.

Is there a fix for the slow Win XP and Win 98 networking?

I'm also getting the same problem, slow to browse Win98 shares in My Network Places from the XP Machine. Told my mate to bugger off with win98 and put 2k or XP on it, yet he still uses it. doh. -
There's no repair option for IE6 in XP unfortunately. Lame of MS. Instead, run the command prompt and: sfc /scannow should replace any dodgy files causing it to crash.
