Thanks to Neowin for the link to it, here is what they say about it: DeviantPC has posted a guide to Windows XP Services. I had a quick look through and can already see that this outweighs previous guides I have seen on XP's services. With the fun look at the Microsoft Description and then "Human description" even if you don't change anything its a good laugh to read and a "real world" look at what those pesky services are doing. How many people know that disabling services that you don't need can significantly enhance the speed of Windows? “There is a significant gain in performance to be had if certain services are disabled in WindowsXP. It’s just finding the right ones that’s the problem” Let's take a look through them shall we? http://www.deviantpc.com/forums/showthread...=&threadid=1926 Warning! Changing the services on your PC can have dramatic side effects in as far as that your PC may fail to boot. Be smart and do a system restore first. Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System restore. We recommend you leave this service running until you are satisfied with the results. also, go to http://vzone.virgin.net/aaron.stevens/Services.htm if you want an easier job of copying and pasting into Word/Notepad so you can keep it on your PC.

One of the mods accidently deleted it during a pruning process never mind...

why install 5.2 retail, then a 5.1 upgrade patch? isn't that like downgrading to a lower version? Probably why your CD Drives disappeared.

looks well impressive with that Watercolour V4 theme!

Its set to open up in My Documents. You can edit the shortcut to make it open elsewhere e.g. your shortcut properties says the following: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe change it to: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe c:\ And click on OK, next time you start Windows Explorer it will view the C:\ drive, but the folder list doesn't appear. There are extra switches you can put in the shortcut that I believe will make the folder pane appear, which is discussed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q307856

If you use the classic theme, then you can modify the colours via Display > Appearances. Have a go.

We've told you countless times how to install it in other threads. please read them

July Desktops If you plan to img-embed your desktop, please try to keep it at/under 1024x768 and under 60k (It's recommended that you link it externally if your resolution is larger or if the filesize is bigger) Include your screenshot with text - such as theme name, icon name, wallpaper name, and the relevant links to them. This saves other users asking you questions or sending you a PM requesting items. Check your hosted image works before posting - Geocities, Tripod and MSN Communities are not good. Try getting an account at Netfirms If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. (sorry for the earlier accidental deletion of this thread, repost your desktop if you have already posted in this thread)

Try Warp2Search.net

No point in using it matey, once you connect online with it, it will attempt to uninstall itself quietly. You can't use a firewall, that just defeats the purpose of the program.

Blindwite is an alternative to CloneCD, but CloneCD seems to be winning easily, due to the amount of users using it. Nero is something completely different, it can't copy copy-protected games, whereas CloneCD can. Nero would be just a standard burner for burning images sch as ISOs, or BIN/CUE, data cds, audio cds, and video cds. Both Nero and CloneCD are great to have installed on anybody's system!

How to remove logon/logoff sounds for users?
Aaron replied to Rebel's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
Log in as one of the users, go to control panel > sounds, and switch them off. Repeat the process for the next user. Does that work? -
I'd blame this on drivers you're using.

He's only using classic theme. Anyway I've not had that problem, but I had a problem where a column hid behind my taskbar, this was because my taskbar is 2 levels high, like yours. If it was on one level, it probably wouldn't happen. Try it and see. I'm still keeping it 2 levels high though, more room for icons!

Glad to see you've sorted out your CD audio playback problem. For future reference, you can make an MS-DOS boot disk from Windows XP. simply go to My Computer, right click on A:\ and click on Format. Tick the checkbox where it says to make a MS-DOS system disk. After that, place your firmware/bios files onto floppy. Some mobo manufacturers say its very risky to flash a mobo from floppy (probably because floppy has slow access speeds or is unreliable) So in that case, copy the firmware/bios files to the RAMDRIVE the ms-dos disk created. I ain't sure if the WinXP MS-DOS disk makes a RAMDRIVE, but you can always download a win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and put the firmware/bios files on a seperate floppy.

MS has changed the KEY algorithm because of piracy (XPkeygen) from MS intranet: "New Product Keys are required for all Server builds starting with today’s RC1 Lockdown build (build 3639). You must go to http://PKD to request new product keys for the builds that have the new algorithm. Read the below for any questions you may have. Why is this change necessary? This is our latest anti-piracy measure designed to render hacker generated product keys useless in Windows.Net products. With this change, previously issued server beta keys and non-Microsoft generated keys will not be accepted during setup. What products does this change affect? All SKUs in the Windows.Net server family will be affected. This includes Webserver, Standard Server, Small Business Server, Enterprise Server, and Datacenter Server. The change also affects all Windows.Net 64-bit products too."

HelioBar is good for making the Taskbar transparent, don't think I discovered any bugs in the 2 days of using it. (I deleted it cos I'm not keen on transparency, find it annoying IMO) http://www.sycory.com/HelioBar/HelioBar_Main_1.htm

So... I buy the KT400, I'm gonna regret it when the 466 comes out. Oh, so there's no point in buying a mobo anymore now?
