I'm not quite sure about Yahoo, but Google has a nice gmail tray app which is constantly conected to mail server and informs you about new mail as soon as you get one.. If you don't have it already, I can give you invite Although somebody maybe has solution even for yahoo, let's wait and see, I'd like to know too

I've used Spinrite before and I can say that it saved disks which had more bad sectors than WinMe bugs

I have used netsh command through .bat files to achieve fast change of IP address, gateway, etc.. Once u create .bat you can maybe start it automatically through startup folder for each hardware profile. staticIP change example: netsh interface ip set address "name of the connection" static "IP address" "subnetmask" "gateway" "interface metric"

That is true, it could be antivirus software that is giving u troubles. What kind of AV have you got on? Could you please tell us what software did you install after windows reinstall. You should track changes after each software install and see when this delay of shutdown happens..

It could be soundmax driver/software problem, I'm almost sure that this isn't XP problem.. Try to download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's web site..
