  1. I decided to quote myself and bump the topic, Microsoft has updated WAIK for Vista SP1 and Server 2008 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en
  2. Newsm Release Notes, and Download links from Beyond Unreal: http://download.beyondunreal.com/fileworks...3/ut3patch2.exe Also someone made a "better" map for the main menu bringing it down from 60MB to 650kb: http://www.beyondunreal.com/daedalus/singlepost.php?id=11584 [edit] The patch is cumulative so you dont need to install the previous one(s).
  3. I don't think that a lot of players spread everywhere over the internet pay to Real to support real format. for example check Windows Media Classic, Crystal Player, JetAudio... etc I dont think those players natively support playback of Real formats, they just accept the filetypes to be loaded and then try to load a filter or splitter for the media. I know for Media Player Classic you have to either install Real or Real Alternative which includes the Real decoder binaries just stripped of the player. I bet if you associate the Real formats with Windows Media Player and install the decoders it will playback fine, of course its not officially supported by Microsoft.
  4. Microsofts media formats compete with Real, why would they want to make it easy for people to use alternatives? Microsoft wants people to use its codecs so they can control media distribution and make money.

  6. Well some of the points above are why I am surprised by the current success of Blu-Ray. One of HD-DVDs big advantages was it could contain a dvd track that would work in existing dvd players albeit at dvd resolutions; it was also cheaper. I think what is happening is the early adaptors dont care about the cost so much and are buying PS3s. As cluberti said its not really over yet, my guess is 90% of the current hd consumers represent about 10% of the total market over the next few years.
  7. Ive been doing some research on some forms of malware, and I realized that a great way to find it on purpose to study it, would be to use the urls in certain malware blocklists. I'd rather not be more specific about the blocklists
  8. Ray Kurzweil is a futurist that has been saying this for the past 20 years I think. I think he will eventually be right
  9. You generally need Administrative rights to install software and make changes to the system partition with a few exceptions. You can quickly check if you have local Administrative rights from what you see when you right click on the start button: http://lifehacker.com/software/windows-tip...ator-255758.php As for your other question, that means the online help is outdated
  10. I am curious if following clubertis advice helps any, that would at least reduce the possible causes. You have a very old build number for Internet Explorer 7, you may want to try updating it. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en Also the error message says it was a problem calling from the kernel32.dll module, which I doubt is directly the problem; you may be infected with malware of the rootkit type. Bad memory is possible but unlikely since you claim it only happens when visiting certain sites. Would it be possible for you to provide the url for one or more of these sites so others may try to replicate the behavior?
  11. TOPIC MOVED Do you suspect there is some virus or malware on your system? I recommend you start by scanning with HiJackThis and Autoruns :-) http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/to...ools/hijackthis http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx Also although Norton has improved a little lately in terms of system resource usage, I still consider it among the worst Security software in terms of effectiveness. A good free online virus scanner is available here: http://www.virustotal.com/ If you want a good clean gui and effective security software I recommend ESET Smart Security:
  12. I remember seeing something similar on a relatives pc recently. I think there is another mbf file you are supposed to open that is in a folder with other files, the backup file is standalone and cannot be opened by itself. I might not wrong and not remember exactly though.
  13. Can you open the target exe with Dependency Walker; the problem sounds like a missing run-time dependency. http://www.dependencywalker.com/ You should then see the missing modules and can copy/paste the filenames here or save and attach a DWI file.
  14. "Best" goes to running in a ramdisk, meaning no hdd is connected, and using encrypted proxies imo. For daily surfing though I just use Firefox Portable with the NoScript extension and Cookies disabled with exceptions. You could go further and have Firefox "clear Private Data" whenever it is closed. Still your ISP or proxy knows what you are doing.
  15. Although I've been meaning fully go through the guide again since Vista/WAIK SP1 released, I wanted to point out a few "regressions" I noticed in the new pdf Copying and pasting the text inside the quotations does not preserve line breaks. On Page 2 there are two instances of "Error! Bookmark not defined." one at "Installing drivers to Windows PE" a second at "Install_Drivers.CMD". I am not sure why but the new pdf is about 4x the size of the original one despite being about the same length and having no images. WAIK (SP1) now available, maybe mention or add a download link on page 5 since its not immediately obvious? BTW I integrated the LAN Driverpack before as well, a couple drivers did not integrate but those that did did not cause any problems. I am going to be looking further into the integration of the new series of driverpacks soon. Keep up the good work
  16. Wow, I really expected HD-DVD originally would win this or both with survive. At least it will be easier to explain 'HD' to relatives now.
  17. do you get that error when you try to open any office 2000 program, or just a particular one? Have you removed any windows components using a program like nLite? Is this a clean install of windows or is there other software installed which may conflict?
  18. I've seen this for a long time, usually when googling for a hotfix or kb article. The site is like a shell site, if you check the page info in Firefox you will see all the content is being loaded from microsoft servers.

  20. We need more information to begin to help you with this problem. Click on "click here" when you get that error message and copy paste the relevant details here; or get it from Event Viewer.
  21. more news from the Windows Vista Blog http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsv...-vista-sp1.aspx
  22. run memtest http://www.memtest.org/ It could also be a missing dependency.
  23. I would sort the 'Type' column in the system32 folder, and show the 'Company' and 'Description' columns; then just delete the cpl files you do not want. Also TweakUI worked for me, what version of the drivers are you using?
