  1. I think symbolic links might be useful in this situation. http://www.rekenwonder.com/linkmagic.htm http://www.pearlmagik.com/winbolic/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_point http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_symbolic_link
  2. looks like there is some spyware in there. post a HijackThis log. http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/to...ckthis/download
  3. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CTF] "Disable Thread Input Manager"=dword:00000001
  4. In my experience, several SATA optical drives, no drivers were needed to load and complete windows xp setup. I believe this is because the motherboards are emulating SATA as IDE.
  5. Most likely some needed file is missing from this "micro" version you are using. You could monitor the nero.exe process with Process Explorer or FileMon and look for the file read errors. BTW I recommend you use the "verify" feature to check if your burns are really good.
  6. Just FYI MS was ordered by a court to end their Java VM. The reason people are getting infected these days through Sun Java is every time an update comes out even if you install it it leaves behind the older vulnerable version, so be sure to manually uninstall it. About those other things please create new topics for them when appropriate, to avoid getting to off of topic I use expand.exe with "tab completion" its fast and easy. I also use UniExtract aka Universal Extractor by Nitro322, look around the forums, to unpack cabs and most other archives.
  7. sounds like winlogon might have been broken in some manner. was this machine infected with malware? you can try going back to "last known good configuration".
  8. you need to load the registry hive from the hdd you attached. http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserve...3.mspx?mfr=true http://msdn2.microsoft.com/En-US/library/ms940849.aspx You can also use a BartPE or similiar windows based live cd on the other machine instead of having to swap around the hdd. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ BTW MS removed their Java VM back when SP1a came out. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813926
  9. Cheers dude!
  10. http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/NIS081500.exe (61MB) I will test it in a vm and post a screenshot of all the Norton processes and test the Angry IP Scanner. NOTE: Windows Task Manager is misleading in terms of real memory usage. It is only showing the "working set" of the process, which in laymans terms is memory the program asks for, not what it is actually using/needs. "Private Bytes" shows how much the program is currently using and has reserved. (if anyone wants to explain this better, or correct me, please do) Total Running Processes: 4 (run update though or let it scan and the number increase like crazy, over 10 in my test) Total Working Set: 45188K (first run, live update), 6208K (idle) Total Private Bytes: 121228K (first run, live update), 89448K (idle) Conclusion: Definetly a step in the right direction for Norton, it is demanding less than previous versions. However Norton is still the most demanding AV I know of and is not a leader in effectiveness and security. Screenshots: Norton also detected Angry IP Scanner a few seconds after I dropped it into the vm; this is a false positive. Programs like Norton like to make you think they are protecting you, by over reacting at harmless things, this tends to understate significant issues.
  11. Welcome to MSFN You can tell Windows to "show desktop" in a number of ways. If you enable Quicklaunch there will be a shortcut to do so. You can also right click on the taskbar and choose "show the desktop", you can also use the key combos: winkey+d and winkey+m you can repeat the hotkey to toggle the effect. That will only minimize or hide the program and not end the processes. [edit] here are some free apps that will actually kill the tasks: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...s/taskkill.mspx http://www.anappaday.com/downloads/2006/09...-quickkill.html http://www.aswit.com/akill/
  12. if it takes your pc over 30 minutes to install the "non-taxing" drivers then something is wrong with your pc. Run some malware removal software, close whatever programs you have open. possibly reformat. Also I will ask again is this XP or Vista?
  13. I dont see how that is possible, I think you are measuring wrong. Is this Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Other? Norton AV is not just one process, there are multiple, add them up and compare it to the cumulative total of other AV and you will know the difference. Use Process Explorer and note all the 'Symantec' processes. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ssexplorer.mspx
  14. Is this XP or Vista? That sounds like a driver problem, please uninstall whatever video drivers you have and then download and install the latest Catalyst drivers from here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html Choose XP or Vista, then install just the Display Driver, not the CCC or anything else, and reboot. Then post a screenshot of your dxdiag Display tab. If your System process does tax your cpu then we will investigate that next.
  15. heres another tool: VideoCacheView http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/video_cache_view.html btw i think some of the Firefox extensions should be removed as they no longer work with many sites and are not being updated anymore.
  16. I've use the AIO Video Bookmarklet to download the Flash Video files (flv) directly and watch them in Media Player Classic (mplayerc.exe) directly (with FFDShow installed), no transcoding needed. As for extracting the audio there FLV Extract.
  17. helpful tools for those working with WIM (Windows Imaging Format) files. GImageX http://blogs.technet.com/richardsmith/arch...-available.aspx WIMMaster http://www.boot-land.net/forums/WIMMaster-t3001.html
  18. Did you try installing it on MCE, did you get an error? If you did you could probably edit the installer or registry so it would install. Otherwise there are ways to install MCE on XP Pro.
  19. the only idea I have for persistent settings would be to use SLAX with "configsave" http://blog.slax.org/ http://slax.hosting4p.com/doc_using_linux_....php#configsave
  20. Have you tried the Firewall built into Vista? It has a significant feature that was absent from previous versions of Windows, namely outbound filtering. I actually still need to try it. Configure Vista Firewall to support outbound packet filtering http://searchwindowssecurity.techtarget.co...1247138,00.html
  21. Ive been meaning to try SteadyState myself. BTW these programs don't protect you from security vulnerabilities, they just quickly refresh your computer to a given state. They do not stop people from installing malicious software, abusing a network, using a boot cd or usb drive, etc.
  22. I think you would like Ubuntu Desktop the best. If your hard drive is full how are you going to download this though? http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubuntu-7.1...386.iso.torrent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(Linux_distribution)
  23. do you want just a file browser or a full shell replacer? Here are some examples: Shell Replacement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_shell_replacement File Browsers: A43 http://www.primitus.us/a43/ FreeCommander http://www.freecommander.com/ UltraExplorer http://www.mustangpeak.net/ultraexplorer.html XYplorer http://www.xyplorer.com/ xplorer² http://www.zabkat.com/ ExplorerXP
  24. I would avoid installing VMware Tools if you intend to intend to migrate an image to a physical machine. I havent tried it so I dont know if using vmware tools will cause problems, but I know VirtualBox did not uninstall its guest additions properly. As dexter mentioned in his guide you can mount the vmdk in the host machine, or what I do is use the Acronis bootable Media CD to backup an image across the LAN.
  25. nice guide dexter.inside read it in one sitting I learned a couple of things: I think WIM can be used for all versions of Windows, not just Vista. BDD first time hearing about this. Symantec SRESHELL (Norton System Recovery Shell) first time hearing about this. vmount was looking for this. Some Questions/Observations: Post 11 why are you using LSI Logic I/O Adapter and SCSI disk? Post 24 To copy from a template profile to the default profile I logon as Administrator, open System Properties>Advanced>User Profiles:Settings>Copy To>Change>Object Name:Everyone>Check Names>OK>Browse>Default User>OK. I also think there is a simple cmd to do this. Post 24 I set my VM to use two processors b/c I have a dualcore in the host and in my sysprep.inf I use: "UpdateUPHAL = "ACPIAPIC_UP,%WINDIR%\Inf\Hal.inf" Post 45 I think the sysprep setup errors caused by nlite only occur if you include an I386 folder in Sysprep. some pictures seem to be missing, also please use png instead of jpeg or gif
