If Microsoft wants to stay relevant they will need to ship a lighter, faster, and more powerful OS while maintaining backwards compatibility. I think a modularized OS is the right direction. And don't forget DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS!

So you can connect to "http://www.microsoft.com" but not "http://www.microsoft.com/downloads" ? Or you can connect but when you start downloading it fails? Are you using Internet Explorer if yes what version? Have you tried this with Firefox?

Here are some of my reasons for liking Vista sorry for breaking with the formatting... SECURITY: Same kernel as Server editions UAC makes running as User more feasible Service Hardening IE7 in protected mode File/Folder Virtualization ASLR, DEP enforced NETWORK: Next-Generation TCP/IP Stack (Native IPv6, Native Wireless, SMB2, SSTP) Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, IPSEC, NAP, RDP & RA improvements Native X86-64 Drivers exist! 4+ GB without PAE Kernel Patch Protection GUI Can skip/rename files in use for copy/move operations DWM offloads alot of IO and CPU load to GPU and reduces GDI calls 256px compressed PNG for large icons Explorer Breadcrumbs, Windows Search integrated in toolbar Aero theme is good enough unlike default fisher price XP theme Luna Tray ballons stay on top of taskbar Time Calendar popup Improved DPI Support Open CMD here and Open file path integrated in shell Deployment One answer file (XML) HAL independent Can inject drivers into image offline. WIM, SIM, ImageX, Sysprep are the norm OTHER Improved Media Center, Games Comes with .NET Framework Supports AHCI Improved Reliability and Performance Monitor Users can burn discs using SPTI WinPE 2.x

1) verify that your BIOS detects the drive when its connected. 2) use AHCI if possible 3) If Vista has the drivers it should detect your drive 4) format it with the appropriate filesystem If Vista does not detect it in AHCI mode, you need to either load the drivers from a drive Vista can recognize, integrate the drivers and build a new install source, or try using IDE mode in the BIOS. BTW what edition of Vista are you using and is it SP1? vLite (freeware) makes it pretty simple to integrate the drivers and do other things: http://www.vlite.net/

news source: http://www.informationweek.com/news/softwa...cleID=209400823 product page: http://www.vmware.com/products/vi/esx/esx3i.html Wow this is quite a move, I think I hear some chairs being thrown. I am not really surprised by this news, I think its a smart decision by VMware, but I wonder how long this will last? I hope this makes Microsoft develop Hyper-V faster too. As Cluberti mentions although both are level one hypervisors there are still fundamental differences between them that have pros/cons in different situations. What's interesting is VMware claims ESX uses a micro "vmkernel", but that it wraps around the Linux kernel (not micro). I also wonder what the difference is between 'Enlightened I/O' and 'VMI'? I hope we see some independent and accurate benchmarks for these products soon. [EDIT] 3000 posts!

Hey XPero I am sorta happy to read this news I think its the right thing to do: you want to move on to bigger and more interesting projects and at the same time you dont want the older projects to stale. I think announcing this is the best thing you can do for yourself and for XPize/Vize and you released the source which gives us no excuse to make it even better! cheers

Server 2008 SP1 X64 'vs' Vista SP1 X64 - why the difference ?
DigeratiPrime replied to benifin's topic in vLite
Post your the ini from each and we can probably tell you why there is such a difference. Maybe vLite is more aggressive with the Server editions because the GUI features like Aero arent typically used? -
hid dos windows.. cmdow replacement?
DigeratiPrime replied to phaolo's topic in Application Installs
hidcon as Jaclaz mentioned can hide the command window completely just use "hidcon file.cmd". Another is RunHiddenConsole.exe but I think I remember having problems using it with 16bit applications like format.com -
look at the Firefox window in the Vista screenshot or http://www.cdartdisplay.com/index.php?categoryid=13 Not sure what dock he is using though.

AMD has been and still is the best value IMO for processors imo. Only reason to go Intel is if you don't mind paying extra for marginal increases in performance. I just bought my first Intel CPU in years btw mainly because they are way ahead in fab process (45nm) and the motherboards used in the current Shuttle boxes have problems.

Thought this was interesting, basically a imitation of Excel 2007 done in WPF and less than 3MB. Not suitable to use though IMO. http://www.clearoffice.com/

Problem with sites like these is they need your login and password to work.

Most people new to Vista want to disable the UAC, User Account Control, prompts completely. Others will want to configure it to behave differently. This guide will show you: An easy way to turn it on or off. How to configure the advanced settings. 1. An easy way to turn it on or off. Open the Run window. Either Start>Run or press winkey+r Goto the 'Tools' tab, Select Disable UAC, press Launch, Reboot. 2. If you want to configure the advanced settings: Open Local Group Policy as Administrator, by creating a shortcut to 'gpedit.msc', then right click on it and select 'Run as Administrator'. Expand 'Computer Configuration', 'Windows Settings', 'Security Settings', 'Local Policies', 'Security Options'. Scroll to the bottom.

I would probably use a second hard drive (Internal/External/NAS/SAN/RAID/Other) and backup to it using DeltaCopy or Robocopy. DeltaCopy http://www.aboutmyip.com/AboutMyXApp/DeltaCopy.jsp Robocopy GUI http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc160891.aspx Acronis True Image might also work but isnt free. If you need to burn the data to disc, I know ImgBurn has a 'Write Queue' mode but that is only for image files.

Fontbook for windows anyone? anywhere?
DigeratiPrime replied to Ludwig Von Cookie Koopa's topic in Software Hangout
Easy, a Google search for 'Font Manager' will return a lot of positive results. freeware: http://xiles.net/ http://www.bitstorm.org/fontlist/ http://www.moonsoftware.com/fxplorer.asp http://www.styopkin.com/details_free_and_e...nts_viewer.html -
I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. Technically the parent forum is not OS specific, but Vista should have its own forum to distinguish it.

Can you try writing that again, it is not clear what the problem is. GSS does not include the network driver for your notebook? -
Hide Administrator user on Logon but show for UAC prompt
DigeratiPrime replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Windows Vista
Well a system with multiple User accounts will stop at the "Welcome Screen" (?) and see the Administrator account. I want the User accounts to be able to elevate to Administrator without being presented an easy way to go fully Administrator by just logging is as such. This would be useful for Family PC's.
