  1. I searched the internet and could not find a comparison of these competing integrated RAID solutions, so I'll just start one. nVidia NVRAID URL: http://www.nvidia.com/object/feature_raid.html Console: MediaSheild Supported Levels: 0, 1, 0+1, 5, JBOD OROM: Yes Compatible with Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2? ??? 2. No kidding, I should have tried a /? or looked into the readme further. I tried -n and it worked, no reboot, just the console. Thanks
  3. Intel does not (suprisingly) support Windows 7 yet, but I figure the Vista x86 and x64 drivers should work the same on Windows 7. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Fi...01〈=eng The problem is the drivers in Windows 7 RC are 8.6.2.1012 4/8/2009 The latest package on Intel's site are 8.8.0.1009 3/13/2009 It is odd that the drivers shipped with 7 RC are dated newer but a lower version number, something is wrong. Anyway, I am not really interested in having the latest drivers, but rather just want at least the Matrix Storage Console so I can monitor the status of my drives. I am not sure if I should run the installer, because I am not sure if it is going to install bad drivers and cause problems. Ideas?
  4. Personally I am not really familiar with those previous versions of WMP, I never really gave it a chance until v12 as weird as that may sound. Are you sure WMP12 cannot be setup to look like you want, perhaps an example screenshot of what you are trying to achieve? I think I see what you are referring to in this screenshot http://www.winsupersite.com/images/reviews/wmp10_rtm_02.jpg Have you looked at foobar2000? http://www.foobar2000.org/
  5. Moving topic to hardware forum, since matter pertains to hardware drivers. If it was a driver problem with a particular OS and not HWID, it could belong in the proper OS forum. Btw Nvidia still supports and updates drivers for the GeForce 6 and 7 series. What OS are you using, and what is the HWID of your display adapter?
  6. A safe browsing list is a database that is locally stored and checked against; updates are downloaded on a regular interval. Program updates, should really only be a comparision of the installed version and current released version. Neither of these are really an invasion of privacy IMO, just a convenience and maintenance feature. Opera's proxy however is an obvious privacy issue, I think AOL has been doing the same for years. BTW there is a 3rd party build of Chrome called Iron that is supposedly "more" private: http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_i...ome_vs_iron.php Keep in mind your ISP probably (is required) to keep a log of all your activity. They normally handle your DNS lookups and can easily see all HTTP traffic.
  7. yup definitely prefer the Starter Ed wallpaper, flag is not as large and distracting.
  8. Hmm, not sure about this. It seems controversial http://digg.com/general_sciences/Scientist...ster_Than_Light Reminds me of the quantum entanglement experiment.

  10. I got 3 things to say about performance here and don't shoot the messenger Using more disk space does not affect performance, unless there is more data to read, or there is excessive fragmentation. I don't see any memory leaks with anything later than Vista SP1, of course I notice greater memory usage than 2000 but again there are more services and caching (SuperFetch). If you jump to WINE on Linux because of performance problems on Windows well good luck. The graphics drivers are poor, WINE is not going to be as fast or reliable as native win32, and probably only games in directx 8 or opengl will render. Have you done FPS comparisons? I bet there is not much difference and I think anything beyond v-sync / refresh rate doesn't matter. BTW the software forum is really for specific software issues, not hardware and not the Windows operating system in general. In this case a particular game or app with a performance issue.
  11. With Windows 7 you can now remove IE8 through the Control Panel; vLite is unnecessary. Vista did have some fundamental problems that were worked out by the time of SP1, and SP2 is now availible. And IMO Windows 7 RC has even better performance than Vista SP2. Vista is a much more complex and feature rich OS compared to 2000. If you understand all the bells and whistles, you will see the productivity gains are worth the hardware toll. If you're having performance problem with games, it's probably the graphics drivers.
  12. I voted Microsoft, but was strongly considering Intel. I gave the nod to Microsoft mostly due to their great website, Redmond is also a nice campus. I think Intel is the epitome of quality and cutting edge; their support is very good, I've gotten responses directly from engineers and not generic useless tips that I already had mentioned in my ticket. BTW Apple to Microsoft is sorta like AMD to Intel
  13. I am confused: how is 'search' faster in XP than in Vista/7? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Search The convenience of having it in the StartMenu also saves time and adds up.
  14. If this is the right machine... http://pospos.com.au/?m=5&id=229 They suggest/include

  16. It's already becoming the de facto standard here.
  17. Vmware Thinapp can virtualize all filesystem / registry including drivers and services, but it is expensive. Microsoft App-V is similiar but I haven't started using it yet; it's part of MDOP. Personally I run apps with limited rights so they cannot modify or "junk up" important areas of the system. Vista introducted filesystem and registry virtualization for programs that were hardcoded to write to protected folders as part of UAC. This basically isolates programs which would conflict and allows them to install and be run simultaneously. It's also easy to clean up since it's found in "%APPDATA%\Local\VirtualStore".
  18. What is the HWID of your audio device? Verify the driver inf files contain the HWID strings. Moving topic to the nlite forum...
  19. The proximity of hard drives in most enclosures has always bothered me, with the disks almost stacked directly on each other the vibration from one has to be affecting the other. However I guess that since the vibration / noise is constant the drives are "used" to it. It looks like when he shouts it is only recorded for the initial imbalance and not the entire duration. I should move my post to the hardware forum
  20. It's going to vary because of Superfetch. Windows 7 Ultimate x86 RC guest machine with 1GB of RAM and Vmware Tools installed: Total 1023 Cached 261 Availible 715 Free 503
  21. Yeah I think this is a problem that affects all clients, meaning it's the service itself with the problem. Really how could the client software be dropping connections? There is probably a really poor response time from the server or packet loss.
  22. Well I was reading and I think you cannot use iSCSI with teamed adapters, and depending on how cheap they can pull this off it would make it competitive with FC (Fiber Channel). Plus upgrading an existing infrastructure would be easy. The only areas I can think where this is really useful is network storage and network video.
  23. I dont think this is possible without re-packaging or combining the original project files. You should probably use a MSP. MSP files are MSI patches, basically differencing installers, which contain only changes from the original installer.
