Well since this is a Windows 7 upgrade specific question I'll move it to the 7 Forum. I think the upgrade discs are the same as the retail discs, just uses a different Product ID.

My guess: FLEngine.dll tries to load Windows Socket to create a network connection and fails. Or another runtime program library is missing or corrupted.

That's the most important info. What servers are listening on port 34447? The laptop is probably trying to find a printer or something. If the destination port was incrementing, it would likely be a scanner. 34447 is a non standard port so it's probably not malware trying to infect other pcs.

Flash player sometimes causes XP to reboot
DigeratiPrime replied to tain's topic in Hardware Hangout
Unfortunately I think this is a problem with the cpu, I looked around a little and I see people running Prime95 on the Intel i7 without problems, also hard reboots with Prime95 are indicative of cpu problems. I am moving this to the hardware forum, to see if we can get some more ideas. Other possibilities could be the power supply failing, or the chipset faulting. -
RAID 1 faster concurrent reads than RAID 0?
DigeratiPrime replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
This is where I think RAID 1 might be better than RAID 0, reading multiple large files. For example two different DVD video image files (iso) being read simultaneously. With RAID 1 the reading can be done independently by each disk, whereas with RAID 0 the stripes for each file must be read alternating between disks. In this scenario imagine there is two remote users watching video, so latency is important. -
I believe that when a file is deleted it is actually removed from the MFT, so it appears deleted although the data is not securely erased from the disk. Hence Ghost has nothing to do with this problem. What exactly do you mean by "listed" anyway, it appears in Explorer? What settings / options are you using to backup with Ghost? Are you using sector copy? I suggest looking into ImageX and WIM from Microsoft...

Look through the free software sticky topic, there are a number of good video editing apps there.
-
I think RAID 1 is faster then RAID 0 when reading two different files since it can read the seperate files simultanesouly from each disk. Whrereas RAID 0 would read a part of each file (stripe) from each disk before seeking to the other file and back. It's just a theory but I am wondering if anyone knows the facts here.

Problems with Wireshark 1.2 in Windows 7 x64
DigeratiPrime replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Windows 7
oh yeah i forgot about that. I will try that now and report back asap. [edit] Well I was able to save a capture "NetTrace.etl" and open it with Network Monitor 3.3, though I had to change the Windows Parser from Stubs to Full, but I couldn't open that etl directly file with Wireshark. It complained that "the capture file appears to have been cut short in the middle of a packet". Saving it as a cap file and then importing it into Wireshark works though. However as I added at the botton of the top post Wireshark x86 is working fine otherwise in Windows x64, so I consider that an acceptable workaround. Additionally I reccomend decreasing the default size for the trace file to less than 250mb because that took a while to open and parse. [edit2] another more direct method is to use nmcap which will save to a cap file which can be opened directly with wireshark. -

Next steps: Check the CPU voltage to make sure it is correct before doing anything else. An infrared thermometer can tell you if the heatsink is getting hot, without having to touch it. If the heatsink is not absorbing heat, check the thermal adhesive between the cpu and heatsink. If the heatsink gets too hot, then upgrade the heatsink or fan(s). If the problem is unique to that CPU then replace it. -
Below are error messages I get when trying to run wireshark-win64-1.2.0 on Windows 7 x64 RC. This version of Windows is not supported by WinPcap 4.1 beta5. Fix:Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows Vista (SP2) The program can't start because NPPTools.dll is missing from your computer. Fix: winpcap-nmap-4.02.exe from http://nmap.org/dist/nmap-4.85BETA10-win32.zip Dumpcap has stopped working. Fix: Unable to load WinPcap (wpcap.dll); Wireshark will no be able to capture packets. Fix: The NPF driver isn't running. Fix: from elevated command prompt: net start npf Notes: The problem is only with the 64-bit version of Wireshark. wireshark-win32-1.2.0.exe installs and works fine on both Windows 7 x86 and x64. Network Monitor 3.3 x64 is installed and works.

Flash player sometimes causes XP to reboot
DigeratiPrime replied to tain's topic in Hardware Hangout
My guess: problem with the cpu. A usermode app cannot hard reset the system, closest thing is a BSOD. Try running Prime95 a little and seeing if you can crash the system, also monitor the temps, remotely if you can. If it was RAM I would expect a BSOD. Some other apps: Core Damage http://damage.vigilantesoftware.com/ OCCT http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php -
How about a challenge?

So what have we learned? That even if your pc is seemingly running fine, there may still be a ghost in the machine. Some other handy programs include: Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb896653.aspx Process Hacker http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/index.php YAPM http://yaprocmon.sourceforge.net/faq.html -
I think the problem with it is the flag is too "flat" and the edges too sharp. The background appears to the the login screen, but flipped horizontally with the bird removed.

Well what are you trying to boot off the USB drive? Does your BIOS detect your USB drive? You probably just need to format the drive with the correct boot sector, and if you can point the BIOS to it, then it should boot. [edit] I modified the topic title to add "to boot from USB".

Another thing I noticed is although the author there states that this elevation trick could still work if the target process had ASLR enabled - I don't think it's been demonstrated. Also for those that are concerned about security running as a limited user is still sound AFAIK.

there should be a "page up" and "page down" key on the keyboard. -

I'll bet nothing but I will point out that Conficker for example would punch right through that -
Full disclosure I've been aware of the issue myself and recently took the time to investigate it, but I wanted to hear how others use UAC so I can judge Microsofts reasoning here. If you go up one level on that site they have videos of this http://www.pretentiousname.com/misc/win7_uac_whitelist2.html If I understand Secure Desktop correctly, it's there to stop an application from being able to click in it's own UAC dialog box to elevate itself. So I leave it on now The way I see it is it's only a matter of time before these methods are used against us.

TY for 1920x1200 I am surprised there is no "7", what makes you think this is "official"?
-
I thought that was an essay Anyways try UniExtract to unpack the installer. http://legroom.net/software/uniextract You can probably setup your dial-up connection manually without additional software. What OS are you using? All you really need is the access number and login credentials.
-
I personally like UAC and run it on the highest settings and logon as a Limited User. So since I can't vote add +1 to the first poll option

Just adding what I use: the HP Sleeve for the HP Mini; it fits perfectly in a carry-on case.

I think most of the "bloat" from v6 came from the two linux guest addition packages (Vmware Tools) , they're each 100MB. Space on a hard drive doesnt really affect performance if those files are not loaded into memory. There are many improvements from v5, so the 200MB linux.iso file really doesn't matter.
-
I think VMware Workstation is probably the most user friendly, it is the only one with guest additions that support drag and drop of files that I know of.
