  1. Depends on what you want. Do you want full disk encryption or just files or folders? Look into Bitlocker or Truecypt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker_Drive_Encryption http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueCrypt
  2. Maybe webcamXP Free (supports only 1 video source) http://www.webcamxp.com/home.aspx There is also software which is intended for DVR and CCTV use.
  3. There are some in the sticky topic 'Free Software List':.
  4. Anyone know if the Media Streaming option in \Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings\ in R2 RTM can be used? If one clicks on the Choose media streaming options... link it displays "The page failed to load". I installed the Desktop Experience feature, but it still seems broken. Would this work when the Streaming Media Services role is released for RTM? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...odinfo2008.aspx
  5. No problem HoppaLong Your going to need WAIK for Vista or 7. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...11-39c26d3b3b34 And depending on if your working with PE 2.0 (Vista) you use peimg, if PE2.1 (7) you use dism to service drivers. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...161(WS.10).aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...258(WS.10).aspx for example:

  7. No problem ahmad2080 As Ponch mentioned a VistaPE aka WinPE 2 boot disc is a good solution since everything will run off the disc and the the hard disk can be mounted as read only. You can also load PE into a ramdisk and eject the disc which makes everything very fast and allows you to burn discs within PE. Another solution is to eject the laptop 2.5" HDD and connect it via a IDE/USB/SATA adapter. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812232002
  8. I'd recommend checking out the Winbuilder project(s) for XP or PE 1 solutions. Personally I prefer WinPE 2 since driver integration is greatly simplified. relevant links http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Prein...ion_Environment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinBuilder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reatogo-X-PE
  9. Two relevant mozillazine wiki articles http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_bookmarks http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks
  10. Here's a few I've used: HydraIRC http://www.hydrairc.com/ X-Chat http://www.xchat.org/ X-Chat 2 http://www.silverex.org/news/ ChatZilla https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16
  11. You shouldn't be using the hard drive you are attempting to recover from. You should be working on it 'offline' since any time you write to that disc there is a chance you are overwriting the sectors you are trying to recover from.
  12. It doesn't sound like Ghost overwrote any of the data where the D partition was so it might be possible to recover from those sectors. Try Recuva (freeware) http://www.piriform.com/recuva [edit] After installing cancel out of the wizard, open Options, then Actions, check both: "Deep Scan" and "Scan for non-deleted files"; scan All Drives.
  13. A new tool (freeware) I became aware of... Link http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...;showtopic=8986 Description Screenshot
  14. It sounds to me like you want some sort of "offline explorer" software, where a catalog or cache is made of the directory contents. I've seen this done with video files using Ant Movie Catalog, image files using ACDSee Pro Photo Manager, and is a common feature to FTP software.
  15. We need to understand when setup is hanging. XP Setup has these stages: Text Mode - format hard drive, copy files Setup Wizard - prompts for product key, admin pass, etc Graphical Mode - detects network adapters, other hardware, etc OOBE "Out Of Box Experience" - create user accounts, activate My guess is it freezes after the setup wizard when detecting other hardware. 16. http://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#performance Disable Session Restore / Undo Close Tab # In Firefox's address bar, type in about:config and then hit enter # Right-click on any entry and select New - Boolean # For the name, enter browser.sessionstore.enabled and click OK # Select false and then click OK
  17. Application Virtualization software like App-V and ThinApp can do this. Not sure of anything simpler though, maybe a WIM archive?
  18. Maybe some plugin like adobe flash or reader is causing this? Try launching a browser in its safemode to see if its a plugin. If that fails to help I would check the process cpu usage in task manager or process explorer, and maybe the io in process monitor.
  19. Do you know the SIDs or do you need a script to get them from a user account?
  20. Is this Windows 7 RC, RTM, or other build?
  21. I had been going through this process myself and was going to post a new topic but decided to append it here. It's not working 100% though, I am trying to install to a 16GB SDHC for an Asus 900A Eee PC. Part 1 WAIK Download and install WAIK. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en Right-click and Run as administrator Deployment Tools Command Prompt Part 2 Prepare target media (x) diskpart list disk select disk x clean create partition primary format fs=ntfs quick active list volume exit Part 3 ImageX You can run imagex /info <path>\install.wim to find the Image Index # and Edition ID you want to install; in my case path was d:\Install.wim and Index # was 5 for Ultimate. You can also optionally mount the install.wim and perform Part 5 now. imagex /apply <path>\install.wim 5 x: /verify Part 4 Make target (x) bootable x86\bootsect /nt60 x: bcdboot x:windows /s x: Part 5 Modify USB services reg load hklm\temp x:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbccgp /v group /d "System Reserved" /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbccgp /v start /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbehci /v group /d "System Reserved" /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbehci /v start /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbhub /v group /d "System Reserved" /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbhub /v start /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbohci /v group /d "System Reserved" /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbohci /v start /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbuhci /v group /d "System Reserved" /f reg add hklm\temp\controlset002\services\usbuhci /v start /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f reg unload hklm\temp The Problem This boots but I get a BSOD, after loading disk.sys it seems when trying Safe Mode. If I do the following bcdedit /store x:\Boot\bcd /set {default} device partition=c: bcdedit /store x:\Boot\bcd /set {default} osdevice partition=c: bcdedit /store x:\Boot\bcd /set {bootmgr} device partition=c: it then stops on Also tried but didnt work bcdedit /store x:\Boot\BCD /set {default} path \Windows\system\boot\winload.exe Very close I think...
  22. Yup so we have a Catch-22. I think 'time' is an important thing to consider though when talking about security. 8 years means it was either overlooked or ignored for 8 years; vulnerable for 8 years. Then again if a tree falls in the woods... I just don't like that people call some idea a law and pretend that in itself makes it true, it's not a good premise.
