I am still a little confused about the actual setup described. You have two systems, with different motherboards and versions of windows. Do both computers have shares or just one of them? I interpret that: If you put the D-Link PCI card in your XP system and try to read the shares on the Vista system it hangs. If you put the D-Link PCI card in your Vista system and try to read the shares on the XP system it hangs. Is that right?

I did not notice your specs at the bottom of the first post. Otherwise I would have pointed out that they might be insufficient. What I meant by version was if you had the latest patch v3369. http://www.beyondunreal.com/main/ut2004/ut2004essential.php OK, I should assume people are using the official Windows 7 beta. Settings files (ini) often have operating system and hardware specific settings. IMO the only significant factor UT2004 has on CPU usage is the number and difficulty of bots (AI). What graphics settings are you running the game on?

VirtualBox Error with 64-bit VM's .. can anyone else confirm?
DigeratiPrime replied to graysky's topic in Software Hangout
What version of VirtualBox are you using? What is the host Operating System? What is the host CPU? What is the host Motherboard? -
The public Windows 7 beta only included Ultimate.

What operating system are you referring to? Is that screenshot of Vista or Windows 7 and what service pack. What video card and drivers do you have installed? Also what version of Unreal are you running. Was UT2004 installed previously on a separate partition which you are trying to use under a different OS, or is it a new install?

So one of your network cards is able to "lock up" other machines on the network when you try to "access" them? Can you elaborate on what you mean by "lock up" and by "access"? That is, do the remote machines suffer a BSOD or other error messages, does a window or process hang, or does the mouse become unresponsive; etc. Are you sure its not the local machine with the D-Link card this is "locking up"? Also what operating system is installed on these remote machines? Furthermore, what model motherboard are you using with a 3com LOM?

Win7: Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC
DigeratiPrime replied to tain's topic in Technology News
I wonder what applications would require this and do not work native on (Vista or) Windows 7 even with the compatibility shims. I cant wait to see people try to run games in it to increase performance [EDIT] Would this be an actual copy of XP, if so what version and service pack? Would it have its own private memory etc etc? -
4 DVD-RW Drives, Can I Burn 3 DVD's At Once?
DigeratiPrime replied to Redhatcc's topic in Software Hangout
The only way to get around the random IO limitation is to get the minimum throughput up or use a SSD or RAM drive. -
I see you modified your post after I last posted. Try switching to the Classic Start Menu temporarily. Try creating a new user profile and log into it to see if it has the problem. Did you modify the resources of any system files or use any apps that do this?
-
Well you could probably modify or add those icons, but since they were not present before you probably wont see them exposed elsewhere in the system. If you care about system resources then you probably want to keep the original icons or even go so far as to remove them since the bitmaps consume memory. There is software like XPize, Vize, IconPackager, etc that can modify the entire shell at once.

Have 1.1 GB ISO...can I cram it on a CD?
DigeratiPrime replied to mrquincy's topic in Software Hangout
Use WinBuilder to create PE images. Use DVD, USB, or PXE to improve speed and allow larger images. As for compressing to fit on a cd, compress binaries with UPX, reduce the number of packages, eliminate redundant packages. At a maximum of 700MB without overburn and special media, you have a lot to trim. WinPE has these commands PEImg /prep ImageX /compress maximum WinPE also supports split WIMs (swm) using the /ref param. not sure about mkisofs -
That's normal, I opened those fils with ResHack on XP Pro SP3 and saw the same thing. I advise not modifying system files, because it can lead to instability, and will fail 'SFC /SCANNOW' or 'SigVerif'.

Try booting in Safe Mode first from the F8 menu. Check the following registry key to see if its different HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe, You may need to replace the winlogon.exe from the Recovery Console. If you can, post a HiJackThis log http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/to...ckthis/download Also here is a screenshot from Sysinternals Process Explorer showing the threads in the winlogon.exe process (XP Pro SP3)

Apps on second HDD after reinstall of OS
DigeratiPrime replied to arpharazon's topic in Software Hangout
Well if doing unattended XP you can also move the entire Program Files and Common Program Files to another partition using WINNT.SIF [Unattended] CommonProgramFilesDir="D:\Program Files\Common Files" ProgramFilesDir="D:\Program Files" Some apps, I've only seen it with AOL, still have "C" hard coded and will install there. -

An upgrade install should retain application specific registry entries. Otherwise export the registry keys needed by the applications before doing a clean install. "Portable" do not use or depend on registry keys. -
Systems Slows Down as I work (Is it Due to Streaming Audio)
DigeratiPrime replied to DreamSkape's topic in Software Hangout
BSOD is an acronym for "Blue Screen Of Death" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death What are the system specs for the machine? What web browser or program are you using to listen to the streaming music? When you say 'almost stops responding' you mean you can still move the mouse around etc, but it will not shutdown? Try opening Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Exc) and going to the Processes and Performance tabs. -

Memory defragmenters make no difference, RAM has a constant access time. In fact these programs just waste memory. If your system is freezing without a BSOD then there is probably a hardware fault; likely overheating. -
4 DVD-RW Drives, Can I Burn 3 DVD's At Once?
DigeratiPrime replied to Redhatcc's topic in Software Hangout
Hey no problem I actually posted that I was wrong originally because what you said made sense, I then remembered that bit and had to edit my post BTW the Mythbusters did try the shatter myth in their second episode http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0QT4Y1Y3ug This guy is saying DVD's can go up to 32,000 RPM which I calculate to be approx 56X on the high end and 20X on the low. http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2003/ClerbieMontilus.shtml I recommend burning dvds at 8X anyway to get better burn quality http://club.cdfreaks.com/f33/slow-write-sp...no-good-247643/ Also the mode the drive uses is determine by the drives controller, and not by software http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=128732 -

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope FINAL

I admit I used gparted not too long ago and was really impressed by how well it works these days. Problem is a Live CD category is easy to add, but technically we could add almost any number of applications that would run on them; furthermore many installer discs are 'live' now too. I foresee it spawning a new topic, which would probably belong in the other subforum. And the topics would need names to avoid confusion: 'Free Software for Windows List', and 'Free Software for Linux List'. On a different note what I would really like to see is Guides made by members that show how/why they use certain software, what it can do, and why they like it; this might be a sticky topic or a new subforum. What do you guys and gals think?

4 DVD-RW Drives, Can I Burn 3 DVD's At Once?
DigeratiPrime replied to Redhatcc's topic in Software Hangout
I am not so sure, maybe if the disc is written using the CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) method. With CAV, P-CAV, and Z-CAV I've noticed the speeds accelerate using ImgBurn. http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/p-cav-cav-z-cav-clv-etc-94541/ http://www.cdspeed2000.com/faq.html#4 I think if you did a 16X CLV the disc might shatter or write a ton or errors, but I don't know if 16X DVD = 16X CD in terms of velocity. -
So what's the problem? You cannot get themes to work? Check that the Theme service is not disabled and is started in services.msc.
