What's kind of funny is this same HF_SLIP build is the same exact one I use for 2k Pro and I just compiled it for 2K Advanced Server and that's what happened. I doesn't really seem to affect much but it's still somewhat annoying nonetheless. I still like his 2012 build because either the 2013/14 build I tried just didn't feel the same and less stable to me. I would eventually like to try out Blackwingcat's new HF_SLIP package once he releases it since I've never tried any of his releases.

Yes it does! That's exactly what it looks like.

I just installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I'm not using up to date KernelEx but I've never had this problem using HF_SLIP compiled with tomasz's archives. So, I have Japanese text in the explorer bar. It's where if you double click on it, it'll bring up Internet Security properties. What file do I need to replace to fix this? It's not shlwapi.dll, I checked that one already. The main DLLs that I could think of still show English as the language. It's very minor but still annoying. Edit: I've tried the newest KernelEx, and the problem still persists.

I don't know if he's still "actively" working on SP5.2 at the moment. I'm sure it's not 100% dead but it's come to quite a slowdown due to his busy schedule. Even I don't have any sort of beta copies of USP5.2 and I'm one of the biggest Windows 2000 users on this board. But perhaps Tomasz will chime in but I'm sure he'll tell you about the same thing I just said.

I don't think the YouTube buttons show with Flash 9 anymore, you need at least 10 or higher. I've noticed that as a problem on 98 as well.

What about the devices it installed on without permission? My long time friend had it install on his computer while he was working the night shift. He comes home, surprise! No internet! His wireless adapter wasn't compatible with Windows 10. I would consider this better if A) Things like that weren't happening and B) People weren't being scared to upgrading to it because of the so called XP Apocalypse and all the "bad" things that can happen if you don't.

Honestly, if you need a smartphone to cook rice, I think you should look into a home ec class.

Running windows 98 on asrock mobo 970 extreme 3 r2.0
Tommy replied to yugioh47's topic in Windows 9x/ME
It's almost impossible for you to get away with not using these utilities on a serious Windows 98 build. The video card would definitely raise a concern for me as I even had issues trying to get an NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT with only 256MBs of RAM to work (Would just freeze the system on boot after installing the drivers). If you're going with NVIDIA, I believe that last good ones to really work with it is the GeForce 7900. And unless you're a really hard core gamer, more isn't always better. I've never found a need to go higher than my 8600. Lone also forgot to mention about AMIBIOS. All Asrock boards use it, and it does NOT play very nice with Windows 98. I don't think it's impossible, but it's not very friendly to it. But I wouldn't say that's impossible to run Windows 98 on your build, but you WILL have to change out some hardware and you will absolutely have to use a few Rloew patches in order for it to work properly. Let's start with this question. What do you intend to do with your Windows 98 installation, and maybe even your Windows 10 installation? That way maybe we can help better assess your needs and figure how we can better help you out. -
NOT a site issue, but maybe worth some thought

However my question is, and it's not questioning your decision to upgrade whatsoever, but what on the regular user's side has changed so drastically that it requires a browser upgrade? There are a few little flashier things (on our side) like when we get notifications that pop up down on the bottom of the screen...but as far as functionality goes, why does the forum software require such a new browser when it basically works just about the same way as it did many years ago. I've checked out the same IPS version we're using as a demo and I honestly think the way they've changed stuff is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. But we live in a time where flashy is more important than functionality. (The admin panel is a disaster as far as I'm concerned) All it is is to keep getting people to move up and up to newer things. And most of the time instead of improving the original coding, they rewrite it and just create new holes and exploits. Kinda like Microsoft in a way! As far as older browsers go though, this site works almost flawlessly on Firefox 9.0.1 on Windows 98. Just a few very minor quirks that don't effect usability at all. -

You don't have to "help" just to be a part of the community, some of us are able to help and some people can't. That's why MSFN is what it is, a place to seek help or give help. We hope you decide to come back in the future.

I agree! And honestly, why do you go to someone's house to use their wifi anyway? I don't even really like wifi very much. It's convenient and I do use it, but wired is just sooo much better, despite having to run cords.

Definitely good insight, Jaclaz. And like you said, most people have nothing good to say. You're not missing much with Facebook. I see an abundance of dumb Minions memes that are getting very repulsive. (I never even watched their movies, so I can't say I hate them, but seeing them all the time is crazy). I do like posts sometimes, not often though. It has to be something I totally approve of, like your post actually, hehe. The only reason I joined facebook was because one of my friends kept sending me request after request and after a while, I just joined to shut them up. I guess I could've just blocked them but I believe I joined Facebook shortly before I registered here. But out of anything, I still prefer forums over social media. Mostly because like I said, forums are much more insightful, moderated, and organized. Facebook is merely a load of garbage posts, especially now with elections coming up. I won't unfriend you because of who you endorse or support because it's your right to support who you want, but it does get tiring to see all the time. But give it 10 more years and Facebook will probably end up just like MySpace, which I never used either. Everyday I'd like to just get rid of the darn thing but then I'd lose contact with some people that I wouldn't know how to contact again. Plus, I'm just really sick and tired of memes in general. Most of the time they're just really stupid. Either I don't get them, or I do and still think they're idiotic. Most memes I feel just unleash your inner arrogance and smartalecness, but then that just falls under the under-moderated category. But in a technical sense of the term, I think people just have too much time on their hands and nothing else productive to do.
-
I'd recommend testing it first, JUST to be on the safe side. But there would be absolutely no problem booting between 2000 and XP.
-
I'm semi-private. I don't share any details that I wouldn't want my own mother to know. But really, I miss the old Facebook, before it got so out of hand with the same garbage you see year after year. Basically my "newsfeed", if you can even call it that, is about 90% memes (funny, "insightful", and stupid), and the rest of the 10% is everything else. Honestly, I could go a week and not miss anything important. But what I truly hate about things like Facebook and Twitter is.... It's a vastly large and grossly under-moderated playground. Sure, you can report things to Facebook and they'll get to it when they get to it, but other than that, it's a big free-for-all. That's why I still prefer forums because even though you can still hide your identity, there's a lot more order here than there would be on social media.
-
I've stopped doing that too. I mean, unless they're really close friends then I will but after a while, I can't keep up with that. I have more important things to deal with.
-
I want to keep this as clean as possible, but I want to start a discussion about Facebook and other social media outlets not related to forums like this. I was talking to a colleague of mine this morning at work and we were talking about Facebook and how it's become such an immature outlet for so many people. I have some good friends on my account and some that I can't really contact any other way but Facebook. But honestly, the stuff that goes on there. Now I know some people have thinner skin than others, but if I see something I don't like, I just go ahead and move on. It's your right to feel how you feel after all. But of course that right for you is sometimes waived by others because you get defriended for generally no purpose or over something in general you post, or the ridiculous "spring cleanup". I can totally understand wanting to limit your circles but unless that person actually did something to you in the meantime, why did you let them on your account in the first place? I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know or whom I'm not actually friends with. I do friend some internet friends if I am friends with you long enough on something else other than Facebook but I generally use good judgement on that part. So, how do you guys feel about Facebook or even Twitter (which I've never used)? They certainly have their pros but also have their cons as well. As for myself, I do feel it's a good way to network with people that you wouldn't be able to just call up and invite to lunch, but mainly I feel it's a big waste of time and I don't know why so many people spend so much time on it. After you've seen the same ad for running down the next possible president, or how you feel about love, or about how you can't stand getting up in the morning because you didn't go to bed early. It's like...yeah, I get it. lol

I'm using the Linksys WUSB54g which it seems the utility has a memory hole, but it doesn't really seem to show up on Windows 98 surprisingly. When I used it on 2000, it seemed at times to get so bad that it would bring it to its knees.
-
FYI, I don't have Windows 98 installed on it but I have this same exact model running in this machine and it works quite well I think. I think there are a few design flaws but overall, it's really good.
-
Yep, there's definitely a lot of things different internally between 98 and 7, that's for sure. One thing I've noticed is if you do get wireless networking to work, sometimes it's a pain in the rear. Mine for some reason once it is leased an IP address, it doesn't always update it so when you go online, it'll show that you're not connected and I have to go into IPCONFIG and renew the IP address for that adapter. But except for the few small drawbacks, I still love using the OS and it's very very fast. I understand working and having a family, those things come first so it's good to see where your priorities are! Even if I still get frustrated with the OS at times but I just calm down, come back to it later, and usually figure out what's wrong with it.
-
We hope that the information is useful to you. Windows 98 still has lots of potential so if anything frustrates you, make sure to ask rather than just giving up. We'd like to see the 9x community thrive again.
-
NUSB is pretty much a must have if you plan on using any sort of removable storage devices with Windows 98.
-
Is it just a single update that's having problems or is it a multitude of them? It shouldn't take 45 minutes though. I'm assuming you've already rebooted the computer and tried again? Sometimes that can clear up the stupidest of problems.
-
No, it's not new. In fact I just realized this isn't in my forum, but Windows Vista. I'm still trying to get used to that so disregard my last post. How long have you been waiting for the updates to install? Is it a new installation of Vista or one that you've been working with for a while now? You might have to try and cancel the updates and try them again. I always hated the new Windows Update with this OS because it seemed to bugged out on me, that or a bunch of updates would fail to install for no reason at all.

Did you make sure to install the Windows Update Agent 3.0?
