I used patchmem /m and it was installed after USP3. As stated, this machine never had more than 512MBs of RAM so I just installed it yesterday to see if I could get any better performance out of it and that's when I discovered this.
-
So, I discovered by accident...that installed RLoew's RAM patch causes this problem to happen. Since the machine I was using only had 512MBs of RAM, I went without using it but I remember once he said that even if you don't have over 1gig of RAM that it was still beneficial to use the patch. So I installed it and opened up Outlook, and bam, very low system resources. This hasn't happened at all until I installed the patch. The patch is 7.1 and I don't know if it is the latest or not but I used it in conjunction with USP3, the latest version. So I don't know if the RAM patch itself is flawed here or if it's just not playing nicely with something in USP3. All I know is installing the RAM patch caused this problem to happen.

That's actually good advice, jaclaz. A great way to not crack your screen would be...don't use it while walking. -
The Younger Crowd Attitude Changing on Technology ?
Tommy replied to Monroe's topic in General Discussion
Finally, someone getting smart! I look at people today with all these darn smartphones and how they're so in love with them, but then 3 months down the road, a new one comes out so people quickly ditch their old one for a new one...and so on. If your old one is working fine, what's the object in it?? We didn't constantly buy new PCs every time a new one came out...so why is it like this for phones? And better yet, do most people even need smartphones? I don't, I don't even own one, and I like it that way. I use my PC for all my computing tasks and it does the job just fine. I don't need to spy on my friends, I don't need them spying on me, and I certainly don't need Big Brother checking up on everything I do. People are being duped into believing all this new technology is a necessity and people are really believing it. People lived without smartphones for years, they got along just fine, in fact I think even better because people were forced to communicate and talk to each other. That person next to you that you're blocking out...could be your next best friend...if you took the time to talk to them. Sure, it might be awkward....but it happens sometimes! Anyway, I'm rambling (lecturing) beyond the point of the article. I also like this idea and believe that we should be happy with things we have, use what works and what we already own! Sure, a few dedicated people had to work for years to make 98 and 2000 quite usable in today's age...but it was possible. Windows 2000 continues to be my main OS and will for years to come until it gets to the point that it won't work at all which it will...but as long as Outlook still works with Gmail and something like Firefox works...I'm set! Most programs now are modern enough that I don't need to upgrade. What has always made me laugh are little minor adjustments to a program, very minor that the program itself hasn't change, but the program will only work with the next up operating system. Just a little line of text in the program that gives something like Windows 98 the 21 gun salute minus the 20...and all it takes is removing that line of code and it works just fine. That's not always the case, but usually between minor versions it is. Now as far as human needs and priorities, that DEFINITELY has been turned upside down. When people opt to buy a new iPhone but neglect to pay their utility bills (and expect us to via welfare)...that is wrong. No, you don't need an iPhone, nobody does unless you some traveling businessman, then I can see it. But when you're a hobo with ripped clothes, you stink like a sewer, and get up early at the crack of noon...you're a bum and you don't need an iPhone because you don't even work. You need a job and income so you can pay for that crap on your own and not rely on us. Of course that's not all I'm driving at. I'm driving at how there really are people even with jobs that choose to spend their money on nonsense and not the things they really need and it's sad. Going back to welfare, it simply amazes me how people with cigarettes, tattoos, piercings, and smartphones...all need food stamps, and then they get butthurt because you call them out on it and then they say they paid for that stuff with their own money! Well duh, obviously you WASTED your money on crap you don't need so now you need us to pay for your food. It doesn't work that way but they try to make you believe they're responsible when really, they're full of crap. I just know better because I worked in retail and so does my mother and we can make our own observations. It's not rocket science how people have their needs and wants mixed up. So I'm just going to end it on this note so I went on long enough, I'm just glad that someone is finally getting smart and I hope more people start following that sort of thinking and maybe people can start being human beings again and not spoiled, entitled, little whiny brats. -
Thanks very much for the tips, guys. I will take a good look at them once I have some time. I did however in the meantime install the GeForce 6200 in my system and nothing quirky has happened yet.

Maybe the dispenser is just a ploy to make it look randomly generated, I think they know right off the bat what the numbers are going to be.

Is there a way I can test how much current is being drawn? I remember reading in the past when you'd upgrade your video card to something like this, that you should have at least a 300w minimum power supply. That's why I was a bit reluctant to stick it in there and I went with the Geforce4. The power supply seems to be in good shape and hasn't given me any problems so far.

Thank you very much for the information! I'm not too good when it comes to PSUs and when you research online, you seem to always get mixed reactions on just about anything so I like turning to the pros. I'm hoping these will fit since it's kind of a tight squeeze between the CD drive and PSU, but there seem to be plenty of room sideways. At least for now the PSU I have sitting on the bottom of the case not even secured is working just fine. But eventually I'd like to have something mounted in it properly. lol

I'm not quite sure what it was doing to be truthful. I always had the alarm set so if the CPU got too hot, it would shut the machine down immediately and it never did that. Although it definitely sounds like something fried out, I just don't know what. I still have the board but I haven't touched it for months. If anything, I think something that regulates the CPU died somehow because it acted in an extremely similar way my Dell Optiplex GX270 did except it froze, this didn't. But when you went to turn it on, it does nothing. I wonder if a POST card would say anything or if it even tries to POST at all.

Just a heads-up, AVG 2012 is now installing Zen even if you have turned off automatic Program Updates (has done it to two machines so far). Complaints on the AVG forums don’t appear to be stopping the rollout. I assume it will eventually reach all AVG 2012 installations, effectively killing off that version. More to the point, will it ultimately hit AVG 8.5 and AVG 9? What exactly is Zen? I had some update happen why I was gone that said it would remove AVG9 and replace it with 2015, I think it was. But nothing happened and it's still on my system. I understand they don't want to support old OSs anymore, but to go as far as forcing an install and upgrade to a version that won't work on your system is taking it a bit too far as far as I'm concerned. Too bad they couldn't make a version compatible with Windows 2000 and I truly don't see why they can't. Even the latest Malware Bytes works on 2000 even though when you install it it warns you that you should install at least Windows XP Service Pack 2, but it still functions just fine with 2000.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/391331728150?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT So when it comes to computers, most people sorta cheap out on their power supplies. I don't really want to do that but I also don't need the top of the line. It's going in an HP Vectra VEi8 which is extremely limited in what it'll take because of the form factor. It's standard ATX but the case won't hold a standard PSU. While it's just a spare 98 machine I'd like to put into service, at the time being I have one PSU that's 200w just kinda sitting on the bottom of the case so that at least it'll get proper ventalation but will still give me more than the measly little 90w the PSU it came with could put out. I'd like to use a NVIDIA Geforce4MX 4000 or NVIDIA Geforce 6200 in it but those worried me with such a small PSU. Even 200w is sorta pushing it but at least it's a little bit better since I won't be maxing out the settings anyway, I just want something decent for old gaming. So this is for our classic hardware gurus since getting rid of the computer isn't an option cause I like it otherwise. :3

Servces Reboot Loop after KernelEX 2k3 v26
Tommy replied to CaelThunderwing's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
A little offtopic but what makes your HFSLIP package better to use than tomasz86's HFSLIP? I'd be willing to give it a go just to see what it is like since I know you offered it for download. -
Any Regular NT4 or W2K Users Here, Still?
Tommy replied to nostaglic98's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Windows 2000 is my day-to-day operating system and Windows 98SE is my secondary which hasn't gotten much use lately, but those are my OSes of choice and will be for a very long time to come. If NT4 wasn't as limiting as it is, I would probably use it too. -
I didn't even check that, that's weird. Because I opened the same file from Dependency Walker and did a profile on the file before and after the update.

avgsrvx.zip Here we've run into a problem. Maybe this can help diagnose the problem?

Servces Reboot Loop after KernelEX 2k3 v26
Tommy replied to CaelThunderwing's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Go into the recovery console and perform these steps 1) Check for installed patches/hotfixes; dir $* 2) Change to the directory of the hotfix/patch you wish to remove, change Xs and KB text to match the the patch name and number: CHDIR $NTUninstallKBXXXXXXXXX 3) To uninstall execute the spunist.txt file; BATCH spuninst.txt Press Enter and it will remove the patch from your system. Reboot once completed. The NTUninstall line should be the same as the patch you installed. -
I'm using UURollup v11 daily 06-16-2013 which is the last version that works properly for one of my needs. I'm using the actual HF_SLIP as well but from November 2012 because anything later feels broken to me. I've used this build since it came out and it always worked just fine but this problem with AVG really started about a year ago. What is funny though is that this happened once before and after about a month, the problem sorta just went away. So I don't know if it's something in their code that conflicts with the unofficial updates or what the actual issue at hand is. But as far as any other unofficial updates, that's all I'm using. Although I know eventually I'm gonna have to wipe this system since it's getting extremely bogged down so I'm open to suggestion here.
-
Bluebolt says it works just fine on vanilla, no unofficial mods applied. Unfortunately I don't have an environment that I can test this out on so I'm hoping Bluebolt will come back and give us some more answers. At this point I cannot scan anything at all so I'm thinking if bluebolt takes an extended kernel update, opens it with winzip and extracts the contents of the update, then scans it, maybe we can see what is going on with it.
-
I can't do that but maybe bluebolt can. But I do know that the resident shield is also inactive in this case as well.

There is no recommended setting. There's automatic, boot, demand, system, and disable. The error I receive is 0x6abbbc14 at 0x20511096 cannot be read as well at 0x77f8f281 at 0x00000010 cannot be written. I switched driver to automatic and rebooted but it defaulted back to system. It seems like avgcsrvx.exe is the issue at hand.
-
AVG 9 always seemed to install fine, but as soon as the latest updates came about, then the program started suffering from problems.
-
I've been wondering that myself, thanks for testing! Although my package is a bit old so it might be fixed in a later released but maybe BlackWingCat can look into it?
-
For now the free edition of AVG 9 is available to download at filehippo... http://filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus_32/8004/ Does anyone have problems with AVG 9 Free? Whenever I update it to the latest definitions...for the last year or so, it basically renders the program useless, nothing works on it. It runs but I can't scan and it brings up a bunch of errors when you first log into Windows.
-
Well, at the end of the day, that's exactly how it should be, because higher Win version can only mean much more bloat, unfortunately! Spot on, Dencorso! Then again, I felt the very same way about Windows XP vs Windows 98. But XP never was my favorite and neither is anything else after it. I remember my first "good" computer came with a whopping 128MBs of RAM, which today is the equivalent of piece of crap. But with Windows XP, I was amazed just how little it was to run that operating system. Even for it being the recommended amount, I constantly got running out of memory errors.

So, it's still a problem. I tried Winamp but it didn't seem to be giving me a problem. But watching YouTube on Palemoon seems to, not to a terrible degree but still a tad irritating nonetheless.
