You've got to look at the motherboard specs and make sure there are 98/ME drivers for everything that is on it.

Perhaps not really an answer to your query but hook99, which you would need to run as a background task like I do, has an option to hide captions and keep only the icon which makes the taskbar much more manageable IMO. In addition to hook99 I use a small app called tasklist which I launch with a mouse gesture (using stroke-it as a background app) which pops under the mouse cursor a menu of the running tasks, clicking on any task brings it to front. With this I never need to use the taskbar. And btw, there are very cool tabbed text editors such as Akelpad out there.

Is this not a non-issue since (I assume) all cameras are using one or another model of flash cards which can be read with any semi-decent flash card reader?

PlainOldBookmarks which is actually called PlainOldFavorites appears to be incompatible with Firefox 8. The very advanced Speed Dial extension for Firefox which works very well can be, to some extent, a (relatively) good substitute for the non-working bookmarks IMO.

Allright but my point being that since there is no known issues for doing this job with fdisk and that there is hardly a way to make a mistake with it, a failure to obtain a satisfactory result with it would confirm my suspicion that there might be a new and yet unknown Win98 issue with very recent WD drives of any size which was the object of my first post in this thread but a failure to obtain a satisfactory result with Ranish wouldn't indicate as much as it could simply be due to an error made with this extremely confusing and complicated tool.

I think you should try to contact Western Digital and ask them about it. If there is a new low level format scheme and/or firmware that is not compatible for some reason, then they should be able to tell you about it, and, if so, also tell you whether or not you can do something about it, eg, low level format with an old WD format tool and/or flash the drive with an older firmware version.

If you'd try to run bitpim on your machine you'll notice that it does actually run and itt doesn't even require KernelEx.

Perhaps I am wrong but I think you may perhaps need a Microsoft IntelliMouse for it to work and not a generic 3-buttons mouse. I have vague memories of installing the Intellimouse about 10 years ago on my first PC, a P133 with win95 on it, and from the little I can recall it was just a big buggy mess after installing that. I can't remember whether I had an IntelliMouse, I don't think so, or even a 3-buttons mouse, all I remember is that I swore to myself never to install those drivers again.

So there is not any misunderstanding, when I said I was using Win2K drivers I meant the audigy drivers, not drivers transplanted from 2K to ME. I'm not sure what WDM drivers are included in 98SE but on my ME system all the following WDM drivers are apparently used, and they are all files from WinME apart perhaps from KS.SYS that might be from DirectX 9: KS.SYS KMIXER.SYS wdmaud.sys wdmfs.sys SBEMUL.SYS SWMIDI.SYS SYSAUDIO.SYS And btw I don't think audio output quality is affected by which audio drivers are used, WDM or VxD, I think the advantage of KS or Asio only lies in the lower latency they achieve which comes handy for audio playback only if you use DSP for enhancing your sound as the lower latency will mean that changes you make with, say, an equalizer, will be felt more instantly.

AFAIK you're right, for Java support, the most recent browsers we can use are Opera 10.10, Firefox 3.5.x and K-meleon 1.6.0 Beta2.

As far as I understand the only potential issue of that kind is a switch to IPv6 addresses which 9x OSes don't support. It's likely to happen some day since there does not seem to be enough IPv4 adresses to accommodate for an ever growing number of online machine. Burt then we've seen many miracles happening on the 9x front those last years so there is some hope that someone clever will come up with a solution to support those.

If it's low latency you are after you may well just use Asio4all, foobar's got an asio output plugin. And btw I've an Audigy 2 ZS, with AFAIK, Windows 2k drivers installed, and I can't use KS in foobar, neither with the 8.3 version nor with later versions that require KernelEx. With 8.3 I can use waveout or DirectSound, the asio output components I have found for it don't seem to work properly. With later versions I can use DirectSound or Asio which works well with either Asio4All or the Audigy's own Asio driver. This said I can apparently use KS without issues in at least one application and that is the modular tracker Buzz using the Polac wo_wdm output plugin so it seems KS works here but I never got it to work with foobar. Let us know in case you are succesfull.

As already mentioned the Firefox bookmarks and history issue also affects the current build of SeaMonkey and Palemoon as well as CometBird. However I don't have an issue with the "set as default" option, this works as it should here.

Since we are amongst Opera lovers and users, I was wondering guys if you are also unable to drag an url to the desktop with the builds requiring KernelEx to run? I am not sure this issue has ever been mentioned so I am wondering if it's only happening with me or if it's even a new feature of Opera as I can't test on 2K or XP, using only WinMe exclusively.

No such issue here and I guess you mean Opera 11.52 which is the current official release, betas and alphas being 11.60.x and 12.x respectively AFAIK. Perhaps a missing font and/or some default codepage issue on your system I would guess.

I have done what you ask and it doesn't crash or lock-up but there is no working bookmarks or history either. Not sure I understand what you're doing here exactly but keep it up, you'll get them working eventually (touch wood).

Neither 9x nor 2000 require product activation but I think 2000 is susceptible of being remotely hijack just by being connected to a network so if you don't want to activate and want to be safer on the network, I'd say go 98 (but using something else than IE or an IE front-end as Internet browser and Outlook express as email client), especially if you are fond of it.

I am also wondering about that but for the life of me I can't find the 5 minutes it takes to download the current SeaMonkey, unpack it and test out if it does now run.
