  1. Switch to the Opera browser and use it in Turbo mode. http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2010/09/22/
  2. I was too lazy to check, anyone willing to bother? As anticipated they all run fine (apart from the bookmarks & history). http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Ed./
  3. Of course, convert your false icons to real ones. Greenfish Icon Editor will do the job nicely. B)
  4. We certainly do.
  5. Although I didn't test version 4,5 and 6 they most certainly run now. Aurora = Firefox beta Pale Moon = Firefox fork optimized for speed but incompatible with older hardware Latest builds of both are now running. No version above 3.5x supports Java applets. Version 4 and above don't have Bookmarks or History working but have WebGL. The newer the version the better/faster javascript, HTML5 spec, etc... are supported. The choice is all yours.
  6. I have just tried the new build and it's the same as before, no bookmarks, no history.
  7. Firefox 10 beta running OK. B)
  8. You download MediaInfo, you install it, you open your problematic wmv file with it and then post the basic results here. Perhaps this will help us finding why your Windows Media Player 9 can't play certain wmv files. But as I've said above since ffmpeg is able to transcode it, any ffmpeg based player or decoding library should be able to play it.
  9. Great to see you are still around and active on the KernelEx front Xeno.
  10. This program is one of the many front-ends for ffmpeg.exe and since it can transcode this file you should also be able to play it (without the loss of quality that transcoding necessarily implies) in VLC, MPlayer or any DirectShow front end player making use of FFDShow as all those three are based on ffmpeg for decoding. I appreciate the input, but I can't upload any kinds of movies while on dial-up... Well upload/paste a MediaInfo report then if you don't mind as this is just a few hundred bytes, a few kilobytes at worst. http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
  11. Well, the legacy version of the Cygwin runtime may allow you to run X11 linux apps under 98. I used to have it installed a few years back and remember running Xfig and a few other linux apps I don't remember what they were. I initially installed it with a view to install Geomview but I never managed to get it to run (not clever enough to follow the instructions properly I guess) and so after a while I deleted this whole 1GB+ Cygwin thing to free space for other stuff. Anyway, that's the closest to co-linux under win98 there is I would think. http://www.cygwin.com/win-9x.html http://personal.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/L.Wood/software/SaVi/building-under-Windows/
  12. Apparently not:
  13. No worries.
  14. Sorry to see you taking it this way as I was just trying to be helpful.
  15. Whatever you say...
  16. I personally have no use for this pack so please feel free to ignore my opinion that it is not a good idea to 1) remove ASPI, and 2) include a stub for installing IE6 off Microsoft's servers.
  17. What's that actually supposed to mean? Typical flame bait trolling IMO. Way to go Jaclaz!
  18. I can't say I see any quality difference in vids played by KMPlayer or PotPlayer. I find it funny that you just discovered KMPPlayer as it is one of the most well known media player that is mentioned everywhere since a few years now. Have you been living under a rock? My default player for most video filetypes, aside from wmv it doesn't handle well, is Ges Player btw. It's only in Japanese though and the only english version must be the one I partially translated for myself so I can use it. It's got plenty of cool features no other player seem to have. I have most of the other good/interesting ones installed and available through the explorer context menu anyway:
  19. Sfor, not sure it does what you want but since it is specialized in playing vids with subtitles you may want to have a look at SubEdit Player.
  20. I use virtual clone drive to mount CD images but that's not the only one out there. As for creating CD images there is no lack of solutions either: http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Images-Utils/ISOpen.shtml http://www.syix.com/elmer/Cool%20Stuff%204/IsoBuster.htm http://dpaehl.dd6338.kasserver.com/cdr/cddvdiso.php Be aware though that not all games CDs will support being run from an image because of certain copy protection schemes.
  21. No, they don't seem to. No biggie for me as those Firefox builds are only a secondary browser I launch from Opera if I need to view WebGL content.
  22. I have tried it briefly and it seems to be on par with version 7 from felicitas. Both links point to the installer btw.
  23. We're not speaking about high dynamic range images at 32bit color per channel here are we? We're speaking about the so-called true color mode which is the best your computer display can achieve, and that's 16 million or so colors...
  24. FYI, 32bit color or true color which should actually be called 24bit color is not billions of colors, it's just 16777216 colors (16 millions or so) and it exactly matches what monitors are capable of doing, 256 brightness levels per primary color or 8bit per color channel. This is not a lot of colors and it is easy to prove: for example if you want to create a black to white gradient of 1600 pixels width you've only 256 shades of grey for doing so, or in other words you are lacking 1344 colors. This is why all applications who create gradients are resorting to the artifice of dithering as to perceptually simulate more colors than a computer screen can actually display. If they weren't doing that, most gradients would suffer from banding. And everyone who has done a bit of serious photo editing knows how severely limited true color is, as they sooner or later bump into those annoying banding issues which easily crop up using certain tools. As for the price of graphic cards, I don't think the are related to how many colors they can display but rather to what framerate they can achieve... Please try have some grip on your subject, especially when you go into rants like this, as all you've managed to do is make yourself look like a fool. And apologies to the OP, for yet more "trolling" of his topic...
  25. You certainly are unless you are not bothered by the degradation of image quality that is very obvious in 16bit mode, eg, horrible banding in gradients. OP, there is no operating system reasons why you couldn't get a true color display with win98 and since your hardware is not the issue I suggest you uninstall/reinstall your video drivers, perhaps trying a different version.
