Maybe knowing EXACT videocard on "the one" and on "the other" system may help. YES. http://homepages.tesco.net/J.deBoynePollard/FGA/questions-with-yes-or-no-answers.html What you are probably missing is the appropriate video driver for the video card you have in "the other" system. A good idea would be to re-do after having integrated either the specific video driver or the BTS (Graphics ) driverpacks: http://driverpacks.net/ that would support most hardware at the expense of a bigger size of the build. jaclaz

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
jaclaz replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I have my personal idea on this. An actual recovery in a protected environment is something that goes in the several hundreds pounds range, maybe 1 thousand or more (PLUS the cost of the media). You EITHER found a recovery company that offers VERY reasonable prices OR (choose one) : It is a "trivial" problem that can be solved by yourself as a "reset" would be enough it is a "trivial" problem that you cannot however solve this way as you need some other technique/commands/hardware they are complete morons and they don't know what they are saying If you take off the 249 pounds shipping and the price of a cheap 500Gb USB drive, let's say 40 Pounds, they get more or less 200 pounds for the work, so the problem must be trivial. jaclaz -
Really? Just out of curiosity, how long an experience do you have on a M type keyboard to make a comparison? And with WHICH "now-a-days" keyboard are you making a comparison? NOw, compare this (example): http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net//customizer.html with this (other example): http://www.directron.com/kbimk651.html sometimes (not always, you get what you pay for ) Just for the record, due to an unfortunate accident involving wife, some heavily sugared coffe, and an experimental particle accelerator I have only TWO good ol' IBM keyboards left.... Still just for the record, what cannot be called but "Everything you ever wanted to know about keyboards and never dared to ask": http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/491752-mechanical-keyboard-guide.html jaclaz

Really? And what happens if the "hidden" partition gets corrupted? Will restoring the "other" partition make the system bootable again? Check which one (in these new Windows 7 setups) is the boot partition and which one is the system partition (MS has it the other way round ): http://www.multibooters.co.uk/system.html http://www.multibooters.co.uk/articles/windows_seven.html#install7 jaclaz

Disambiguation: there are NOT two copies of the $MFT. there is ONE copy of the $MFT and the $MFT mirror, which is a copy of first 4 (four) records of the $MFT. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938949.aspx You can use this app: http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/v3/drdd.htm allright to make a copy of the defective disk, by doing partial copies and joining them together (and filling "gaps" with wiped sectors, also in some cases iomaging "backwards" helps. To rebuild the $MFT is something that is NOT "easy-peasy", it needs some knowledge of the NTFS and how it works, though there are apps that do help. See this: http://www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=6543925 AND given links. jaclaz

Seagate ST3500320AS SD15 500GB problem.
jaclaz replied to NEO_AMiGA's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
There has been reports that this kind of behaviour may be due to an imperfect contact of the "motor contacts" of the PCB with the actual drive. When a drive spins up it needs an AWFUL amount of current, and In some cases a USB enclosure simply does not give enough power In these cases, thoroughfully cleaning BOTH sides of the contacts (i.e. BOTH on PCB and drive) AND tighting screws properly has solved the problem in several occasions. If using the cardboard trick, it may happen that contacts are slightly bent and have not enough "springiness" to make full contact after the cardboard has been removed, expecially immediately after the cardboard was removed. Another cause could be semi-stuck bearings, in these cases, having the drive set vertically, and even SLIGHTLY tapping on it, once vertical, with something like a plastic or rubber screwdriver handle may help. See here: jaclaz -
And people BOTH because of lack of attention AND because they have non-clicky keyboards do much more typing errors, which the smart correctors catch and transform in something usually unrelated, stupid or ununderstandable. Iqaluit is an example of a common word that is messed up : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887571/en-us Another interesting suggestion is that you should "Learn to spell HTML": http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/frontpage-help/learn-how-to-spell-html-HA001042927.aspx?redir=0 (it hints that FrontPage may create "superfluous" HTML code ) jaclaz

Just to clear the issue (since this topic was linked to from here: ) Grub4dos can be: installed to the MBR (+a few hidden sector) (file grldr.mbr) loaded from a bootsector (file grldr) see examples here: http://reboot.pro/2362/ invoked from DOS (file grub.exe) loaded as a Linux kernel (file grub.exe) added as an option to BOOT.INI (file grldr) added as an option to the BCD (file grldr.mbr) used as CD/DVD bootsector (file grldr) Notes: grldr and grub.exe are "self-standing" whilst grldr.mbr needs ALSO file grldr. grldr can reside on *ANY* partition (even hidden ones) as long as formatted as FAT12/16/32 , NTFS or Ext2/3/4 The Guide for it is here: http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/Grub4dos.htm jaclaz

To disambiguate, XPe means "XP Embedded" (though widely used XPe can be confused with "XPE" , which is a sort of XP like environment in a PE - where PE is again Pre-installation Environment). Basically XP Embedded is nothing but "normal" XP in a "modularized" or "componentized" version. (there are some slight diferences and additional components, but nothing really "important" that would justify the behaviouur you describe) There is no (afaik) limitation of the kind you describe in "normal" XP Embedded (though it is possible that Samsung "forced" one). It is more likely that the XP driver you attempted using "rely" or "depend on" any number of service(s) or however "components" that are "standard" in a "real XP" but that have not been included in the particular XP Embedded build Samsung made for that device. You have to think at XP vs. XP embedded as you would think of an already built LEGO house vs. a normal LEGO kit to build it, BUT WITHOUT any meaningful schematics to follow when attempting to assemble the house . While with XP you get the house pre-assembled (and also with blocks "glued" together ) , with XP Embedded you get just the blocks (all of them) so you can build (if you are very clever) the same house as the pre-assembled one or (say) a cube of bricks with no openings, additionally this "kit" has also wheels, axles and what not that of course are not used in the actual house. This gives freedom to the actual device developers but obviously does not guarantee that what would work on a full build (like entering from a door and exiting from a window ) will also work in the "freestyle thingy" that was assembled from the blocks (a solid cube on wheels). jaclaz

Google occults a website
jaclaz replied to pointertovoid's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
Most probably (but not really my field of knowledge): Get to the "Sitemap" line. From it get to sitemap_index.xml. From it get to 0.xml. Read the line "viewforum.php?f=66" and LEAVE FORUM #66 alone since it is disallowed as well as the whole site.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitemaps But it could also be the other way round, like that the Forum Admin meant to have that forum crawled, but that *something* prevents the robots to follow the chain and the result is involuntarily to "disallow" it specifically. The "Disallow /" should prevent ANY robot from crawling ANY page, from what I understand, no matter what the Sitemap says.... jaclaz -
Naah, it was just an attempt to a "Kansas City Shuffle", showing some arrogance : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Shuffle If you see Mr. Goodkat or Bennie (Moten) behind the green glass door, please bring (or better carry ) them my gratefulness and appreciation for a nice piece of music and a nice movie (which I know they miss over there, the only use of celluloid being for cartoons). jaclaz

You don't need to "redo". You need to read the stickies in the given forum, they are all aimed to have an XP install (possibly from a nlited source) from a USB device, you read them, than you choose one and see what happens. /and if there are problems, then you ask for help there) If this is the question. jaclaz

AFAIK NOT needed anymore. Embedded menu.lst in grub4dos 0.4.4 10-16-2009 "current release": http://reboot.pro/14/ http://nufans.net/grub4dos/current_release/ BUT newer versions (experimental) like latest here: http://code.google.com/p/grub4dos-chenall/downloads/list And you can avoid the hexediting, there is a tool for it, grubmenu.exe : http://reboot.pro/12591/ inside good ol' grubutils: http://nufans.net/grub4dos/grubutil/grubutil-1.1-bin-w32-2007-07-24.zip jaclaz

9x members? is there xp member's proj somewhere?
jaclaz replied to lama's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
What the HECK is the actual question(s)? This Forum: MSFN Forum> Microsoft Software Products> Windows 95/98/98SE/ME> Windows 9x Member Projects http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/91-windows-9x-member-projects/ Corresponds loosely to this one: MSFN Forum > Member Contributed Projects http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/102-member-contributed-projects/ It has been moved to inside the Windows 95/98/98SE/ME as it is of limited popularity and practically used by a small number of aficionados - And normally NO, you CANNOT use 9x files on XP, but you may want to try using NT 4.00 or 2K ones, example: but I don't think that any "old version" will solve any of your "problems". At first glance, it seems to me that most of your problems derive from using Explorer, either as shell or as filemanager. What was the sense of double posting? jaclaz -
I see that you are pessimist (just like most people behind the green glass door) but countless and innumearable blessed buddies over there only see the half full glass. jaclaz

Yep, you are definitely confused. Windows 9x/Me is currently compatible ONLY with FAT12/FAT16/FAT32, though there are tools to access (NOT boot from) NTFS. Windows NT 3.5 and 4.0 only have FAT12/FAT16 and NTFS (and early version) thoutgh there are tools to access (NOT boot from) FAT32. WIndows 2K and later support natively FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 AND NTFS. Transfer speed of a USB device depends on FOUR things: actual BUS speed (hardware of the PC) actual device speed (hardware of the USB stick, NOT all sticks are the same) actual driver speed (depending on OS) actual size of files (several smallish files are slower than few bigger ones) The filesystem used in my experience is actually not as relevant as the above, compare: If you want to boot from the USB stick, RMPREPUSB is recommended, but you can choose among several ones, listed here: http://reboot.pro/9460/ jaclaz

Yes, as said you are missing some basics. The actual MBR (Master Boot Record) in the "usual" form of the MS operating systems (i.e. NOT a multiboot MBR). Has FIVE main functions: hold the partition table data (four entries, each 16 bytes long) that represent addresses of the partitions hold the disk signature (four bytes) on NT/2K and later systems ONLY find which of the four entries has an active state (i.e. check that either byte 0x01BE, 0x01CE, 0x01DE, 0x01EE is 0x80) check optionally that the actual partition entry marked as "active" as per above is NOT "hidden" (i.e. that it's partition type does NOT begin with 1 or 2) (some MBR code versions will not work with hidden active partitions) http://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/partitions/partition_types-1.html call the bootsector of the partition or volume makrked as active Since it is called "Master" even semantically it implies that some "Slave" boot record must exist. If you use a boot-loader, like grub4dos, you can "by-pass" BOTH the MBR and partition bootrecord and directly load the OS kernel, an example for DOS 7.x/8.x (a.k.a. Windows 9x/Me), create a bootable floppy running grub4dos then, you can boot your DOS/Win9x on first partition of first hard disk INDIFFERENTLY with: chainloader (hd0)+1 the above chainloads the MBR (which chainloads the PBR, which chainloads the kernel) root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 the above chainloads the PBR or bootsector (which chainloads the kernel) root (hd0,0) chainloader /io.sys the above directly chainloads the kernel file BUT you need anyway some data in the MBR (the partition table data) and in the PBR ( the BPB or Bios Parameter Block), and of course the "magic bytes" 55AA. These are detailed in the given links. But you can try creating a FAT32 filesystem with apps like the FAT32 Formatter: http://reboot.pro/2959/page__st__7 and you will see at a glance which parts are needed in the bootsector to actually boot. jaclaz

Checking for alive hosts batch script
jaclaz replied to chosey's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
if %found% == 1 ( and you have some "queer" spaces, that may prevent the actual working. but there should be simpler ways, here is one: @ECHO OFF SetLocal EnableDelayedExpansion IF EXIST alive.txt del alive.txt IF EXIST nosysaid.txt del nosysaid.txt FOR /f %%q in (win-segment.txt) DO ( FOR /f %%r in ('TYPE blacklist.txt^|FIND "%%q"') DO ( ping %%q -n 1 -w 20 if !errorlevel! equ 0 echo %%q >> alive.txt pause ) ) and here another one: @ECHO OFF IF EXIST alive.txt del alive.txt IF EXIST nosysaid.txt del nosysaid.txt FOR /f %%q in (win-segment.txt) DO FIND "%%q" blacklist.txt 1>nul&&ping %%q -n 1 -w 20&&ECHO %%q>> alive.txt jaclaz -
You seem like thinking that behind the green glass door there is a police state , (which is not ). The greengrocer was actually necessitated and beseeched, and all happened in an unconditionally affectionate, compassionate and chummy manner. He admitted, but happily, and confessed, but effervescently, what he would have otherwise freely and on his own accord communicated. jaclaz
-
You really need to take some time to READ the given links. It's called "bootsector" do you think that it's code will be executed when booting? jaclaz
-
Yep, the greengrocers behind the green glass have plenty assortment of alluring and queer berries, but miss many basic vegetables, like no peas nor usual beans, they do have pellets, nuggets and seeds, though. Bestsellers afaik are runner beans and green beans. Common are also bitterleaves, broccoli and brussels sprouts, radicchio, lettuce and swiss chards aplenty, beet greens but no spinaches. Chinese cabbage and Fiddleheads, but no artichokes, nor potatoes. jaclaz

Basically we DO NOT have a tested procedure. The 5400.6's DO NOT suffer from the SAME problem as the 7200.11 do, so, even if the symptoms are the same it is likely that the cause is different. If you had spent 5 (five) minutes to search the board you would have found this: and this: jaclaz
