  1. Obvious reply : Buy several SATA CD drives. Buy several USB sticks. Buy several bidirectional SATA TO IDE converters Buy several USB to IDE converters. Buy several USB sticks. All the rest would be a miracle. How long do you estimate will be install time from USB (provided that the PC's are USB 2.0 compatible) (plain install, fully attended) on 20 PC's? You can make a PE on the stick and run WINNT32 on each PC, to install from local source, then you take the USB stick with you while the XP from the internal hard disk installs itself. To do this you will need to have: a "universal source" (provided that the 20 Pc's are not identical a "fully unattended" setting testing the above (attended) on at least on PC per type correct problems and loop to #1 or #2 n times Or you can make a sysprepped "generalized" install image and depoy to each PC. (and again you will have to loop through troubleshooting). Or if the PC's are all the same or no more than two or three "groups" you may want to make a few attended installs and then clone the drives.... How long will it take? We are talking of 20 PC's, not 200 or 2,000 ..... jaclaz
  2. Technically, yes. There are several approaches to it. If you are going to use your "personal" MS-Office on a USB device always on the same computer, just install it on the USB stick. Otherwise you may want to use some "ad-hoc" programs, like thinapp, pravaya V3 and similar ones. Check this also: http://news.office-watch.com/t/n.aspx?a=1519 jaclaz
  3. Plenty of buffers (and buufers ), but no cache : BTW, the armadillos in there can all roll into a ball : https://www.msu.edu/~nixonjos/armadillo/facts.html or, if you prefer, they are all three-banded armadillos: https://www.msu.edu/~nixonjos/armadillo/tolypeutes.html and additionally they all come appear to arrive from the Caatinga, Cerrado or from the Mato Grosso. jaclaz
  4. Yep The message was: YOU CANNOT. (but there are some small tweaks that may mitigate the issues). More here: http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-system-cache.html jaclaz
  5. Maybe change it form "buufer" to "cache" , The "buffer" is normally intended as "hardware", as in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_buffer Looky here : http://www.uwe-sieber.de/ntcacheset_e.html jaclaz
  6. There is something wrong (actually several things). You CANNOT measure the TTL max level on the Tx with a Voltmeter. (NO, not even typing like mad, you need a signal analyzer or an oscilloscope) It makes NO sense whatever to measure the Voltage at BOTH Tx and Rx. The Yellow +5 V cable MUST have +5 V. I cannot say what is the problem but the +5 V should come STEADY out of the Yellow wire, just as it comes (or should come) STEADY at +5 V level from the USB port. jaclaz
  7. Are you using a Voltmeter or an Oscilloscope? Are you typing like mad in hyperterminal when measuring the Tx voltage level against Ground? The site: http://www.avitresearch.co.uk/usb_to_ttl.htm says that you should have +5V on the Yellow wire - still measured against ground (Black wire). and this +5 V should remain UNchanged no matter if a resistor is newtween Red wire and Ground (Black wire) and this Yellow +5V MUST NOT be connected ANYWHERE. jaclaz
  8. Well, not really brain surgery or space technology, resistors have not any kind of polarity and they tend to have two terminals (an actual 2.2 Kohm resistor depicted below): Now, you solder the RIGHT hand terminal to the RED cable and the LEFT hand one to Ground, or, if you prefer, you solder the LEFT hand trerminal to the RED cable and the RIGHT hand one to Ground, or, even easier, remember this: 1 terminal=1 connection Yes , if all power is coming from the SAME PSU every ground SHOULD already be COMMON, BUT you never know, for all you know the particular adapter/converter MAY have a decoupler or an induction voltage leak so WHY not grounding, as it costs nothing or next to nothing (a one foot piece of black wire, at the most). I am perplexed by "SATA power block", the HD has a pin marked GROUND, near to the Tx and RX, you connect to it the GROUND. If you prefer from the adapter you start with 3 (three) cables: TX, RX and GROUND and connect ALL THREE of them to the corresponding pins on the HD PCB: Naaah, that is NO fun. Using a sledgehammer is more advised. jaclaz
  9. You make friends with an electronic engineer (or anyone with a solder iron and a 2.2 Kohm resistance handy) and you make him/her solder the resistor between Tx ( the Red cable) and Ground. This is interesting. Do you think that point #7 of the read-me-first can be interpreted in ANY other way? Just in case: Does "ALL" have any other meaning than: The text of point #7 was even amended , see P.P.S.: If you have a suggestion to add some more explicit wording to that effect, you are welcome to provide it, I honestly think I can do nothing more than that. YES. jaclaz
  10. READ the page you linked to: http://www.avitresearch.co.uk/usb_to_ttl.htm particularly this: COMPARE with points #6, #7 and #10 of the read-me-first: Particularly this: Draw your own conclusions. jaclaz

  12. It is *possible*, but HIGHLY UNlikely. The USB to Parallel cables are "USB to Parallel" cables they are designed NOT as a full bi-directional converter between USB and IEEE 1284, they usually provide only a "subset" of the protocol. Compare with: http://www.keil.com/support/docs/2866.htm And with: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/bastelecke/Rund%20um%20den%20PC/USB2LPT/index.html.en (that may actually work) jaclaz
  13. But is the serial number actually missing? Or is the serial number containing "&" that creates the problem/issue? jaclaz
  14. And I was told there are flying pink elephants... Be careful - no matter the color - there may be issues with flying elephants : jaclaz

  16. Yep , that's exactly the idea. But you see the number of volunteers lab rats is so small that I have to cultivate each and every occasion .... . And I do have one word for you: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061722/quotes?qt0282091 pssss, come closer, don't be afraid .... : Opera jaclaz
  17. Evidently yes. And however I don' t think it is part of your business. jaclaz
  18. Definitely, no charangos not ANY other kind of lute around, neither banjos nor ukuleles or guitars, but quite a few mando-basses and mando-cellos. Accordions I have seen, but no bagpipes, lots of Scottishmen quite aggravated and irritated by this missing. jaclaz

    Usb Problem

This is most probably NOT nlite related, but more likely USB drivers related. This could be due because on "second" boot the BIOS simply ignores the USB connected CD because the CD is not anymore the "boot device". You can try creating a new .iso using a bootmanager like grub4dos and *always* boot from the USB CD, once continuing booting the CD and once continuing with the local disk. But it is also possible that you need to add drivers/settings. Generally speaking having a USB mouse is often a problem during install, anyway. Depending on a number of factors you may want to try using a USB stick or hard disk, instead, see here: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/157-install-windows-from-usb/ or use a PE jaclaz
  21. YES, MAYBE, but NOT here. WHAT is the difficult part in "this thread is ONLY for LBA0 and BSY problems on the 7200.11"? Compare with point #1 "FOREWORD" of the read-me-first: Quick questionnaire : Q1: Is it a 7200.11 A1: If yes add 1, if no add 0 and go to end of questionnare Q2: Is it a BSY problem? A2:If yes add 1, if no add 0 Q3:Is it a LBA0 problem? A3:If yes add 1, if no add 0 If your total is 2 or more post on the main thread, if below 2 start a new thread. jaclaz
  22. BUT not properly protected, and though there are NO predators, there are plenty killers and even assassins! Armadillos are not at the risk of extinction, BUT there could be a massacre and they could be annihilated or nullified. In a nutshell (one of the many over there) : Poor, suffering, needy , fortuneless armadillos! jaclaz
  23. Actually, as I see it EXACTLY because of that the "Unknown" SMI stick is a good candidate for tests, as you have *NOTHING* to loose. Of course if you see the experimenting as "fun".
