Well it is a bit more complex than simply copying a few files. The default (or "failover") EFI boot files are: \efi\boot\bootia32.efi <- for 32 bit UEFI \efi\boot\bootx64.efi <- for 64 bit UEFI For windows you will need to get from the install .wim the file \source\bootmgrfw.efi (but then there are all the "localized" files or get it and all the other files from the installed system, usually C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\) and rename it to either bootia32.efi or bootx64.efi, BUT a normally installed windows will have that file as: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi then you will need to have (actually create) a (proper) BCD as \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD, *like*: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336950.aspx or: http://www.hasper.info/repair-a-destroyed-windows-7-uefi-boot-sector/ And then you will need to add the boot entry to the NVRAM. How? But that's where the BCDboot tool comes handy: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744347(v=ws.10).aspx https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824874.aspx jaclaz

Well, it is not that GPT partitions don't have a boot flag, it is the whole mechanism of UEFI booting that works differently. If you are booting in UEFI a GPT style disk, on it there must be a FAT (FAT32 usually but FAT12/16 will normally do as well) partition containing the Windows EFI boot files. The UEFI loads a file from a FAT partition, a few motherboards UEFI implementation do include a UEFI NTFS driver but it is rare. Unless you are willing to modify your UEFI, this is not negotiable, there are workarounds, but usually they are not worth it, and in any case a small FAT partition is needed. jaclaz

The new word for today is "agnotology". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnotology It helps to believe how ignorance is not our own fault but of the "system", which leads us to "agnoiology" (and that makes two new words for today), from an article by Keith Lehrer cited here: http://judithcurry.com/2011/07/11/agnotology-agnoiology-and-cognitronics/ jaclaz -

Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22 on the HP Pavilion zt1135
jaclaz replied to ppgrainbow's topic in Windows 9x/ME
As a side note, in the good ol' times I had (I actually still have it and it still works fine, or at lest did last time I happened to use it) a very clever device (made by Archos) which doubled as CD player (with earplugs) and as CD Data reader sporting a short cable and a PCMCIA card (that could be inserted when not in use in a recess of the player itself) powered by a few rechargeable batteries. The drivers for the PCMCIA were on floppy and could be installed to DOS/Win3.x/Windows easily. Finding today PCMCIA cards might be difficult though, and you should make VERY sure that what you have is actually PCMCIA and NOT CardBus (and anyway check the exact version/voltage) there is a lot of confusion on those cards, JFYI: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/141776-modifying-a-really-old-dell-laptop/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/141776-modifying-a-really-old-dell-laptop/#entry907932 jaclaz- 21 replies

Another reason why the IoT may not be that good an idea ...
jaclaz replied to jaclaz's topic in Technology News
Of course not , it was just a failed attempt by the PR to minimize the issue by making it a common issue to all systems, by putting the blame on the generic technology instead of the (flawed) specific implementation. For NO apparent reason : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Così_fan_tutte jaclaz -
What's a Reasonable Windows Update Strategy Going Forward?
jaclaz replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
Well I have had NT4, 2K's and even XP systems that were (some still are) only rebooted once a year or so (or in case of some hardware or power failure). It greatly depends of what is run on them of course. jaclaz -

Well, (according to this survey): https://newsroom.accenture.com/news/heightened-security-concerns-and-falling-smartphone-demand-stymie-consumer-technology-market-growth-accenture-survey-reveals.htm we can maybe still have some hope in humanity ... ... though the suggested cure seems to me worse than the illness jaclaz -
Well, somewhere a \boot\BCD (that is a file called "BCD" inside a folder "boot") *must* exist. Normally (on a NON-previously-partitioned disk) a Windows 7 installs the BOOTMGR and \boot\BCD in a "special" partition that gets no drive letter, but when it installs on a pre-partitioned disk it creates those two files on the "system" partition, aka C:. If you have NTLDR on C: you should have on it also NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI on the same drive. Do another thing. Open a command prompt (elevated) when booted in Windows 7. Type in it (issue ENTER line by line): diskpartselect disk 0detail diskPost the output. Type EXIT to exit from diskpart. Then run the following commands: attrib C:\bootmgrattrib C:\boot\BCDattrib C:\ntldrattrib C:\ntdetect.comattrib C:\boot.iniPost the output. jaclaz

You'd better IMNSHO: 1) start a new, dedicated thread to these comments 2) Remove IMMEDIATELY from your site this crappy flickering .gif: as it could easily induce epilepsy to a number of people (to me it has the effect of becoming very, very angry at the web designer ).

With all due respect , this makes NO sense whatsoever (as a reply to the OP question). Carpenter's comparison: Q: My walls are dirty, can I re-paint them? A: You can, but it is better to completely demolish your house and rebuild it from the ground up, this time in masonry instead of timber... jaclaz

Naaah, no particular issue. Boot into Windows 7. 1) Which drive letter gets the partition where 7 is installed? <- let's say it is C: 2) Which drive letter gets the partition where XP is installed? <-let's say it is D: Make sure that you can see "hidden" and "system" files. Check the C: drive. You should be able to find in it the files: C:\bootmgr C:\boot\BCD Check the D: drive. You should be able to find in it the files: D:\NTLDR D:\NTDETECT.COM D:\BOOT.INI IF the above is correct, run the commands cdob suggested. IF something is different from the above, describe such differences. jaclaz

Which in my case becomes: Total number of hours ever using Windows 10 in the last 3 months: ZERO! @JorgeA If you are willing to translate this sentence for me in plain English: as a bonus I will give you (in the spoiler) a link to the source and no, it is less Off Topic than it seems ... jaclaz

Not particularly on-topic (and not even particularly "reliable" or "confirmed" ) but a very good reason nonetheless to have NOT *someone else* have your data: http://www.10zenmonkeys.com/2016/01/04/dell-computers-has-been-hacked/ jaclaz

Don't worry , after all everything is about the "queer" things the IP board does. If I go to your "member page" and look for content I get: Only Topics: Posts: Topics and posts: And of course if you actuallly started 13 topics and posted in total 415 times, you should have any of 415 "items" or 415-13=402 "items" in the latter. I have to presume that it is some "quirk" in the way the database is managed internally. jaclaz

Well then there is simply something "wrong" with the syntax with /?p=<post_number> (which BTW is the one currently given by the board itself) in some "peculiar" cases (and I never noticed this). Quick check . This one: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/152625-toshiba-hard-disk-how-can-i-locate-and-isolate-bad-sectors/?p=972700 resolves correctly (but it is on a single page thread) as well this one: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174676-difference-between-home-and-core/?p=1113018 resolves correctly (on a 2 page thread),as weel as this one (on a 10 pages thread): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173265-formatting-an-external-drive-using-different-interfaces/?p=1092535 and this one does as well (on a loooong thread): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807-the-solution-for-seagate-720011-hdds/?p=916757 Maybe it only happens because the thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/ is closed? Nothing much to worry then , though of course the good guys at IP board may do with this piece of info (provided that is confirmed, that they actually understand the issue and that they care about it ) jaclaz

That is ANOTHER issue. The limit is 1000 (one thousand) search all posts by me, you will get 40 pages of results, with 25 posts per page, i.e. 25x40=1000. It is a "traditional" limit of the board search engine, in one or the other (previous) version there was even a "warning" about it, that read "(Search results limited to first 1000)" i.e. if you try looking for all posts by me from 1/1/2015 to 31/12/2015 you still get 40 pages by 25. It sounds "strange" that so many posts of yours "disappeared" , maybe there is an issue with your member ID? jaclaz

Has the board software been updated recently? Or some setting changed? Some of the links to forum posts do not resolve correctly. To reproduce go to page 12 of this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/ i.e. here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/page-12 i.e.: hxxp://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/page-12 scroll down until post #287 (or use this link that still works): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/page-12#entry680254 i.e.: hxxp://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/page-12#entry680254 and click on the #287 You will get a popup with this link: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/?p=680254 i.e. hxxp://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/?p=680254 which is correct, but if you copy and paste it, it doesn't resolve correctly, first it attempts to transform the link to: hxxp://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/page-20#entry680254 which is of course wrong, and then goes to the first page, i.e.: hxxp://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61384-how-to-bootinstall-from-usb-key/ jaclaz

Possibly you didn't even try, since it is a .cmd and not a .bat However reply on the other thread, and feel free to ask assistance for modifying it (assistance does not mean that I will write the batch for you it means that I will try and help you modify it or write a new one). jaclaz
