  1. @JorgeA No comments needed to: Though I would like to highlight the basic assumption: Unfortunately, as Windows 10 has grown in adoption and usage, jaclaz
  2. There is no actual "problem" to foresee, casually the given card comes with BOTH drivers AND a manual specifying the connector pinout: https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/USB-2/Card/7-Port-PCI-USB-Card-Adapter~PCIUSB7#dnlds https://sgcdn.startech.com/005329/media/sets/VIA-VT62xx_Drivers/VIA_VT62xx.zip https://sgcdn.startech.com/005329/media/sets/PCIUSB7_Manual/PCIUSB7.pdf Individual wire connectors are usually marked: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/installing-frontal-usb-ports/ AND they are also normally colour-coded: http://www.frontx.com/cpx101_2.html ... only some attention (as always) is needed when connecting them ... jaclaz
  3. Dibya, when quoting something, like this article on Softpedia: http://news.softpedia.com/news/windows-10-upgrade-reportedly-starting-automatically-on-windows-7-pcs-501651.shtml It would be nice if you mentioned the source AND maintained the link to the original reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/4a0asv/warning_windows_7_computers_are_being_reported_as/ Namely this is not "news", as it is more than one month old, that "wave" was mentioned at the time: jaclaz
  4. @FranceBB Maybe useful, maybe not, some history: http://demoseen.com/blog/2009-12-27_Alky_Postmortem.html and the original source files: https://github.com/callen/Alky-Reborn jaclaz
  5. USB is a rather simple bus, it has four wires: http://pinouts.ru/Slots/usb_pinout.shtml It is just the matter of connecting properly those wires. Almost *any* PCI USB 2.0 card will have an internal connector, many will have, rather or additionally to a set of pins, a "normal" USB female. Since I believe you have more than one USB sockets on the front of the case, I would rather get a card *like* this one (example): https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/USB-2/Card/7-Port-PCI-USB-Card-Adapter~PCIUSB7 besides the (back) four ports, it has three internal ports, one as a USB female and two in a "standard" 9 pin dual USB connector: http://pinouts.ru/Motherboard/usb_internal_pinout.shtml jaclaz
  6. Some more info, from the mouth of the wolf: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/wsl/2016/04/22/windows-subsystem-for-linux-overview/ jaclaz
  7. I was just attempting to disprove the statement of it being "obscure registry edits or whatever voodoo", it seems like being a four line .reg file merge or a set of four REG.EXE command lines, openly accessible to everyone, admittedly trying to do that in a "funny" manner. Sorry if I offended you, in this occasion or through the trend you noticed. jaclaz
  8. It is a Chocolatey "link", actually a Nuget package. As a matter of fact it is simply a .zip file (you can open it with - say - 7-zip) containing a number of "metadata" to point *somewhere* else (hopefully a repository with the actual file). Namely, that .nupkg (among a number of completely unneeded *metadata* or whoatever* at the end of the day provides two URL's: $url = 'https://storage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-continuous/Win/366297/mini_installer.exe' $url64bit = 'https://storage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-continuous/Win_x64/366297/mini_installer.exe' Chocolatey is an attempt to have on Windows something similar to apt-get in Linux, i.e. it is a sort of "package manager" or "automagic update": https://chocolatey.org/ It is a nice tool, though I hate the whole idea of "package managers" and of "automagic updates", as I see it and in a nutshell the good programmers guys were not capable to make a simple, direct, not convoluted, way (the "normal" way, working since the dawn of time, which is a single .zip or sf exe with a distinctive name placed on - say - a FTP was evidently too d@mn simple and they really HAD to make it stupidly complex) to download and install programs. jaclaz
  9. well, to be fair, besides Cygwin and a number of Windows NT "ports" of *nix tools through either Cygwin or MinGW/MSys, there has been (since the dawn of time or nearly so) the SFU/SUA/Interix: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interix https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Services_for_UNIX More info: http://www.unix.com/answers-to-frequently-asked-questions/16634-unix-environments-ms-windows.html UNofficial FAQ's (through Wayback Machine): https://web.archive.org/web/20081206232550/http://www.interopsystems.com/tools/FAQs.aspx And original download page: https://web.archive.org/web/20100825232119/http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=896c9688-601b-44f1-81a4-02878ff11778&displaylang=en https://web.archive.org/web/20150602193831/http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/1/c/a1ca7af1-a6e3-46e7-874a-4c5d8c0fb3b7/SFU35SEL_EN.exe Unless there is something really *new* in the way the new thingy works (which I hope) the good MS guys are simply re-addding what they removed in 8/8.1 and later. jaclaz
  10. Yep it hasn't, sorry I wasn't clear at all, my bad . The idea was more leaving the non-adk version alone, i.e. having not *any* DISM in \%Windir%\system32 and have instead Wimlib. For "normal" operations you can use Wimlib, "installing" it and when you need to /Add-Drivers or /Add-Package you use the (appropriate) WAIK/AIK/ADK DISM from its sub-directory (I believe - but I may well be wrong - that you really need the "corresponding" WAIK/AIK/ADK DISM version to use "servicing" commands like /Add-Driver, /Enable-Feature, etc.). In theory such capabilities can be added - I believe - as "simple" scripts on the mounted image, in practice I don't think anyone took the trouble to put them together. jaclaz
  11. Sure, but specifically, you are using a "very narrow" tool designed to solve a very specific problem "issues in unloading a profile" without actually having checked that there are issue specifically related to profile unloading. It's more less like you have a headache and thus you bandage your left ankle, which is very good for a sprained ankle but surprisingly ineffective to relieve you from the headache. jaclaz
  12. Workaround (advised), leave DISM alone: https://wimlib.net/ jaclaz
  13. Which is here: jaclaz
  14. You can find quite a few mini-itx or similar with very low power requirements, AFAICT the issue might be with drivers (XP64 is not exactly the most common OS around), particularly I doubt that the TV-sticks are likely to have suitable drivers available. Maybe, just maybe, you could have an overall "better" experience using a laptop, if you are "stuck" to XP 64 bit. ZOTAC is one of the few manufacturers that have (had) a model, the ID13, that has XP 64 bit drivers AFAICR, but there may be of course other ones: https://www.zotac.com/us/product/mini_pcs/id13 jaclaz P.S.: The cheapest I could find around is 140 Euros (you will have to add RAM and Hard disk - better a SSD ) IMHO not that bad, considering how much they costed earlier: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/874154/Zotac-ZBOX-SD-ID13-barebone-system-Processor-Intel-Atom-D525-2x-18-GHz
  15. A folder has not a size (let alone a default one). The size of a folder is the size of its contents, as said 1026 is typical of not enough disk space available, though of course it could be caused by something else, but basically it means "I cannot write data where you told me to" and normally the "where you told me to" is the Temp folder. Again, check available disk space. Then try writing files to the Temp folder through other programs and see if you have the same 1026 error, if you have the same 1026 error using both WinRar and 7-zip it means that is not connected with either program, but you could try using a plainer command line unzip tool with the same files that give you an error to verify this. jaclaz
  16. There are a lot of possible causes, it is not easy to find the cause if the behaviour is not constant/reproducible. A "workaround" is in some cases to shorten the timeout of killing processes, *like*: http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Slow-Windows-XP-Shutdowns I guess you are referring to the UHPCLEAN tool (this one should be latest version): https://web.archive.org/web/20130325060848/http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6676 That might be useful if you actually have issues with unloading a profile, so the first thing would be to check your event logs (as explained in the readme.txt, which actually seems to me an exceptionally good description of the thingy). jaclaz
  17. Well, you could first try that thingy "as is" in other virtual machines, Qemu (the version included with Qemu Manager has worked excellently for XP), you can get it through the Wayback Machine and it is one of the most similar to real machine VM's: http://web.archive.org/web/20120607071209/http://www.davereyn.co.uk/download.htm http://web.archive.org/web/20120506095037/http://www.davereyn.co.uk/qem/setupqemuk70.exe AND VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads And thank you for the "really experienced" , but these modifications/changes are well outside (actually over my head) my field of experience and knowledge, at the most I can suggest you are some generic troubleshooting paths. Maybe you attempted to do too many things all together, I mean how many functions did you add? 2, 13 or 47? Try with just a handful of them (or even better only one) and see if the thingy BSODs as well, if it does it should mean that is the method/way you attempted to do the edits that is flawed, if it doesn't try adding a few more and see what happens.... I doubt that anyone will want to assist you until you have something at least minimally working. I know that it sounds rude, but consider it from the outside, in perspective. The limitations (actually few) of the XP kernel are not a "new" issue, why someone (the few people with enough knowledge and with the "right kind" of knowledge) would not have already started such a modification project? And if they didn't, what make you think that they are going to take your not (yet) working *whatever* and fix it? Imagine that you have a lawn mower that doesn't want to start, one thing is if you, after cleaning the carburetor, changing the spark plug, etc., manage to have it start but it doesn't run "round", you go to your neighbour (who is an experienced car repairer) and ask him if he can help you tune the engine idling speed, and another is if you disassemble the mower, badly reassemble it, put all excess pieces you weren't able to assemble in a box then bring the half assembled mower and the box to your neighbour saying, "it doesn't start, find out what's wrong with it". jaclaz
  18. With all due respect to everyone involved , I can't stand this. I do realize how I am old, grumpy and essentially a bastard at heart , so feel free to completely ignore the contents of the spoiler, it is probably just me on a bad day, but I have to write it. jaclaz
  19. We must make a sticky of this, recent versions of MS compilers have pre-set the Major OS version to 6 so that compiled executable throw an error "not a valid Win32 application" when run on XP or earlier EVEN IF there is no particular *need* for a Vista or later system. Changing major/minor version to 5.1 is NOT a guarantee that the executable will work, but in many cases that is all that is needed to run them. See: jaclaz
  20. Broken google? Be my guest : http://superuser.com/questions/340396/how-do-i-change-automatic-logon-via-script-or-command-line jaclaz
  21. Sure, it is extremely difficult to guess that Jacopo Lazzari is the real name of jaclaz, when pointed on a site with a cryptic name like http://jaclaz.altervista.org/ which basically contains 3 (three) pages: http://jaclaz.altervista.org/Projects/VDM/vdm.html http://jaclaz.altervista.org/Projects/USB/USBstick.html http://jaclaz.altervista.org/Projects/USB/USBfaqs.html Just to make sure, should I be able to say that NoelC is Noel Carboni if I am pointed by NoelC to: http://noel.prodigitalsoftware.com/Astrophotography.html and find: or should I ask for a signed affidavit about the real identity hiding behind the nick NoelC? jaclaz
  22. Cannot really say what the answer is, however the theme here is about trust and finding out which "solution" is "better", then of course the simplest way to implement it should be chosen. Does Steve Gibson trust the good MS guys? YES (though not entirely as he added the registry permissions edit to the "simple" two registry keys changes). Do you (or should we) trust them? NO, as you ADDITIONALLY to those provisions disable Windows Update, reject/avoid some updates, etc. even using a firewall to minimize communications to to the good MS guys. The debate is more about which one is the smart approach (or if the simpler one is smart enough) jaclaz
  23. Well, specifically I have one of the "least anonymous" handles in all the history of the internet, mainly because on my member page there is a link to my (old and very static) webpage: http://jaclaz.altervista.org/ where my name is written in full on several documents. I will gladly admit that "out of the blue, a link to a Windows 10 Design Concept App" is unexpected, and it was posted EXACTLY with the aim to get people by surprise and off balance to see how they would react to the "news". It is now clear that at least someone will react with a physiological reaction : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight-or-flight_response I could have titled the thread "the most useless app ever available on the Windows Store" but I would have spoiled the effect, and might have been sued by the good Author of the ACTUAL "most useless app on the Windows Store" : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/the-most-useless-app-ever/9wzdncrfjplj I love useless programs and I am a long time fan of Bernard Belanger and his wonderful Nada 0.5: http://www.bernardbelanger.com/computing/NaDa/ which AFAIK had the original idea, more than twelve years ago, of an useless program (and implemented it so cleverly in a multiOS/multiplatform code).. But, in the case of the work by Ratish Philip there is an admirable added factor as somehow he is believing that his work actually has some use. jaclaz
  24. Well Steve Gibson has a re-known attitude to attempt to sell (even for free) some good ol' snake oil and more generally his ego is the size - give or take - of a mid-sized galaxy As a side note and JFYI: http://attrition.org/errata/charlatan/ http://attrition.org/errata/charlatan/steve_gibson/ And also in this case he is senselessly bashing GWX Control Panel, but one cannot be surprised (as he clearly documents them) about which keys are involved, which BTW are (strangely enough) documented by the good MS guys: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351 The first one: Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1 AT LEAST since August 2015: https://web.archive.org/web/20150910142858/https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351 and the second one: Subkey: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1 AT LEAST since January 2016: https://web.archive.org/web/20160122033904/https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351 jaclaz
