He'll ask you how to do that about 57 times. Get ready for some serious copy/pasting.

Tal, you know I will help you solve this on MSN, why make threads about every little thing.

Not entirely true. I have disabled Crytographic Services before, and when playing HL2DM on Steam or even on LAN only, I checked the services and Crypto was Manual and Started.

If I had an old machine, I would probably put two or more HDs on it. The first drive I would use for testing programs. The second drive I would use for more storage of stuff. I think those are probably the two most common purposes for old machines in home environments.

Converting VOB to WMV is acceptable, but ASF is insulting. You'll want to convert to AVI. DivX looks okay, but XviD looks even better at the same bitrate.. but x264 looks even better than XviD at the same bitrate. The only thing about x264 is that it requires more CPU usage to playback, but the visual quality is worth it. When you ask for what is good to encode video, you get a different answer from everyone and are no closer to finding a solution than you were when you first posted. www.videohelp.com www.doom9.org You two-stop resource for all your audio/video needs. Make your own solution.

Yes, a person with a little from column A and a little from column B...

Are you trying to convert media to VOB or VOB to something else? Please be specific.

In regards to which firewall to get, wait until Outpost Firewall v4.0 goes final.

Heh, that sounds very similar to the Club Management Software I provide technical support on where I work. It's called Conexion. It has the ability to do what you're asking for. www.conexionllc.com

Have you tried Dial-A-Fix to re-register all the DirectX files? I've seen that before, usually a codec problem. I'd suggest using Dial-A-Fix, getting rid of any codec packs you have installed, and use K-Lite Codec Pack.

Yeah, CCleaner is a must. Many people don't realize it's true power. There simply is no need of another cleanup tool, unless you're an expert like Andromeda and make your own batch files or something.

You're running SP1? Upload Manager service doesn't exist in SP2 afaik.

Search for topics with the word "Services" in the title and you will see dozens of threads already having the services explained by many members. If you set a service to Automatic, the DLLs are loaded during the XP logo screen before Windows loads, I think. Having it set to Manual doesn't load the DLLs until they have been called upon. I think.

Uhm, it was almost eveident at the beginning that it was a problem with the RAM (when it doesn't POST successfully all the time). Anyway, your stress is your own doing by peeling off the stickers. In a perfect world you could just put them back in, but I guess policy is policy so... yeah... be angry at yourself on this one.

Hahahaahahahahaha! l0lz0rz

Stay on topic please... Well, torrents have been out for what, 5 years and in that short amount of time they've consumed 50% of the file sharing community. If one has problems with Emule or whatever, the option to move up to torrents is always there.

Albator, hahaha, when someone like Andro makes countless posts praising themself for how much of an expert/professional they are, that is not modesty. That's arrogance. Modesty is when someone has superior knowledge and/or experience in something and doesn't feel comfortable admitting to their own prowess. Someone such as myself. I don't call myself an expert, I just say I know a good deal of what I say... most of the time... no one is perfect.
-
RegMon and FileMon help a lot too.
-
Torrents + uTorrent yes, yes, I was praising BitComet but uTorrent works good now.
-
Yeah, I know of all that too. CCleaner takes care of all of it, including most of the popular 3rd party applications as well.

Are you trying to get a government job? I'm just curious because everyone there beats around the bush, putts around the rough, doesn't explain what they do or mean, says vague statements claiming their prowess, and when confronted, decide to flame or insult the other person rather than being truthful, honest and civil. You remind me a lot of a politician. Now, as for increasing performance on a computer, it's easy. But it takes time. Since you have a problem explaining your methods, I'll do the task for you. 1. Startup entries, make sure you know what's running in the background. 2. Services, make sure you have ones you don't need disabled or at least set to Manual. 3. Set your page file to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have and have the initial and maximum value set the same as to reduce excessive fragmentation (since file thrashing will occur between your page file and RAM). 4. The size of your harddrive also bootlenecks your system performance overall. 5. Defragment your harddrive with a good defragmenter (PerfectDisk/Diskeeper/O&O. 6. Use a freeware program such as CCleaner to remove junk files/temp/cache/etc. 7. Clean your registry often with a good registry cleaner, I personally recommend jv16 PowerTools' Registry Cleaner. It received weekly cache updates from the site which make it safer and more effective. Out of the 30+ reg cleaners I've tested, jv16 is the best. 8. Be secure, malware/viruses can affect system performance as well. 9. Use nLite to remove components from Windows you are certain you do not need, users beware however. 10. Hardware wise, make sure you have a good cable/wire arrangement as to allow maximum airflow, get good fans (trade-off between noise level and fan strength), a good heatsink and video card cooler so things don't overheat. Take your case outside once or twice a month to remove dust with a can of compressed air. 11. Also, turn off the heavier Visual Effects. That's probably the 20th time I've spilled all that onto this forum, I probably should have gone and dug up an old thread.

Red X while going to play online game.
Jeremy replied to tal ormanda's topic in Networks and the Internet
I helped him remove M$ Java with XPLite, but he has JRE installed and is using Firefox, so unless Runescape depends on M$ java, I don't know why he would be getting that Red X. -
It has been said by some users on different forums that PD8 performs a bit faster than PD7. I haven't tested this myself, even though I would love to, so I myself would know for sure and then let everyone else know. Sheesh, and Zxian's supposed to be the scientist, not me... Anyway, I don't think any of us really know which one does do the better job. I personally feel like PD8 does the best job because I like how my files are placed in sequencial order (side-by-side). Zxian obviously feels DK does the better job since DK leaves room between files for say, a Windows Update to system files. If PD arranges files side-by-side, an update to a system file that is placed at the very beginning of the disk, would probably result in all other files being moved over that small amount to make room. I don't think this is known for certain, though. if so, SmartPlacement would require a tougher workload for your harddrive as opposed to defrag-only or even having DK leave gaps between files. The question is: a) Is it better to have every side by side for best access time and the least distance needed to travel by the harddrive's mechanical reader? b ) Is it better to have files placed here and there, beginning and end on the disk so the arm has to go from one end to the other. You also have to ask yourself, "Am I being too picky?" Because harddrives today are guarenteed for what, 5 years? So regardless of the access times or how many times you try and access your files, the harddrive should last you a very long time. Anyway, having a defragged drive with one of these excellent products is how to keep your drive healthy. Never having heard of defragmenting and having a drive you've been using for 5 years... that's unhealthy.
