It is not one program, it is a collection of extremely useful utilities all free. Upgrade your BIOS if necessary, and just go to the UBCD homepage to review the utilities it contains.

I don't believe his video driver is at fault. The culprit is likely the new WMP. If you can do a System Restore before it was automatically downloaded and installed, do so. To have more control over what is automatically downloaded and installed from Windows Updates, do the following: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties. Click the 'Automatic Updates' tab and select the option you feel comfortable with, other than having them automatically both downloaded and installed without intervention from you. Also, download and install K-Lite Codec Pack Full. Let us know how that works out for you.

I second that. But before you image your drive, since you want to improve your system's performance, you may want to take care of the following: 1. Startup entries Start > Run > "msconfig" (without quotations) Check off anything you don't use on a constant basis. Make sure you know what's running in the background. 2. Services, they don't all need to be started and set to automatic. 3. Set your page file to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have and have the initial and maximum value set the same as to reduce excessive fragmentation (since file thrashing will occur between your page file and RAM). 4. The size of your harddrive also bootlenecks your system performance overall. (Something to consider for the future) 5. Defragment your harddrive with a good defragmenter (Diskeeper 2007) Automatic, you don't need to manually defrag or schedule anything... ever... 6. Use a freeware program such as CCleaner to remove junk files/temp/cache/etc. About 9-10% of all computer users worldwide use this. 7. Give your registry a gentle cleaning with a safe program (CCleaner does a good job, also jv16 PowerTools.) 8. Be secure, malware/viruses can affect system performance as well. (Router, Kaspersky/NOD32) 11. Also, turn off all Visual Effects, if not all, the "heavier" ones.

Well for starters, there's msconfig to tell you which programs are loading in the background, for which the processes will display in Task Manager. Then there's services.msc to show you the nitty-gritty of what XP is made up of. Be careful with those if you decide to change the settings.

I suggest always downloading critical and security fixes either from Windows Updates or an alternative source. I am being a router and take good security measures, so I'm not worried about getting the latest updates immediately. I use the latest RyanVM Pack whenever I format, which those occasions are few and far between.
-
Try doing a repair installation with your Windows CD.
-
Have you tried simply using RyanVM's Update Pack?
-
Performing an OS upgrade isn't recommended. I suggest you obtain/use a clean bootable source, download RyanVM's Update Pack and the Integrator to fully update it, and try installing that.

Great, next thing you know there will be dozens of 13 year olds going around kicking cats and beating up other kids thinking they will get points or candy or some other reward. There are a lot of young kids out there spending all day in CSS. "Billy, stop wasting all your time on the computer, we just barely paid off our power bill last month!" "Don't worry Mom, 50 more "awps" on CSS and you won't have to worry about next month!" "......" o_O

Zxian, thanks for your help via MSN. For all to know, my solution is as follows: Start > Run > control userpasswords2, Advanced Tab > Advanced > Users > Disable Guest Account. Reboot PC. Accessing Windows Shares should now prompt for a username and password, and if entered correctly, you get access to all the shares!

Hi, I have the same problem that BigDaddy had, yet his solution did not work for me. I'm within VMware at the moment and have the following Services Started/Auto: Computer Browser Network Connections Network Location Awareness Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Routing And Remote Access Security Accounts Manager Server TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Terminal Services Windows Firewall Workstation All I have done is run the Network Setup Wizard on both PCs successfully and set a few folders for sharing. My fiancee's system can browse my shares, but I can't browse hers. Actually, I just added another share on my PC and she can still access the first one, but not the second one. This doesn't make sense. And this is also happening on my local system, not just VMware. We're both running Windows XP Pro SP2 totally updated.

So you're pretty much finished nLiting XP, then?
-
BSOD? What is the error code? It is possible that data is not being properly written to your harddrive and that you may want to run a diagnostic on it by booting to CD with Ultimate Boot CD v3.4 and running the appropriate tool depending on which brand your HD is. Good luck!

Try harder to remember your password. Write it down in a notebook.
-
Start > Run > cmd > ping www.google.com What do you get?
-
Then "C:\\E\LOCALS~1\Temp" should be "C:\DOCUM~1\E\LOCALS~1\Temp"
-
That filepath is wrong. Right-Click on My Computer, Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables > here you see the variable TEMP, what does the value next to it say?

You used Search and found an answer? Are you serious? Hey, guys! Over here! According to hoverman, there's some sort of Search function on MSFN that once used, actually gives us the solution to our problem without even needing to create a thread about it! lol... I'm not picking on you, I'm just joking around. It's just that so many people don't use the search and flood the place unnecessarily. Cheers!

I've had a similar problem with permissions on my fiancee's system. I suspected it was over a year's worth of somewhat sloppy registry cleaning. I was unable to create Services nor start them after they were stopped. I tried DAF, but it didn't fix the issue. The system was also very nLitened from over a year ago, so I decided to format. Of course, that fixed it.

The magic of re-registering DLLs.
-
Also, there is: Right-click on the Start button, Properties, Start Menu Tab > Classic Start Menu. This will put My Computer, and 3 or 4 other icons on your desktop.

I don't think that is possible. Also, it would severely shorten the flash drive's lifespan. Flash drives can handle only so many read/write operations, and nothing reads/writes more than an operating system. Cheers, Jeremy
