Actually, disregard my previous suggestion of removing AVG. The latest anti-virus product comparison available at AV-Comparatives.org shows that AVG has better detection than Avast (shocker) but also freeware AntiVir has even better detection than Kaspersky and NOD32. These are reliable and unbiased third party comparisons, too. I recommended Kaspersky mainly for it's ability to clean infections. I've used it on dozens of systems and it has cleaned them top to bottom. After 30 days you would have to buy it, but you could just use AntiVir, Avast or AVG. Does AVG still have a freeware version? About the Kingsoft file, try doing it in Safe Mode or while booted to a CD with a command prompt or file manager. You could also try Unlocker on it. Kaspersky should be able to remove it on next reboot. It's never failed to do that for me.

It is saving itself inside one of your restore points. I don't know for sure but it's possible AVG in particular isn't able to access anything within a restore point. I suggest you clear all your existing restore points or disable System Restore and then re-enable it. This will clear out that infection. The Kingston one there you should be able to delete yourself as well as the two HTM files there. There are worse malware out there. You might want to ditch AVG altogether and use Avast or a trial version of Kaspersky available here.

Are you referring to your user password to log into Windows?

Use either Automatic Updates Service and a Custom Install, AutoPatcher, or Jcarle's Windows Updates Downloader.

Nice find, thanks!

Reinstall the software.

You mean something like this: Clicky the linky

Honestly, I'd say stick with Windows XP for now and just upgrade the hardware when you have the money to do so. Make sure you clean your temp/junk/cache with CCleaner or nCleaner (a knock-off of CCleaner that is portable), defragment your drive and keep your start-entries at a minimum.

Even after using nLite and all the tweaks I've ever seen, nothing has ever made the Open/Save dialog box show files in Details by default.

Maybe talk to a counselor from your local college/university that offers IT courses?

People have been Astral Projecting for ages. Simply speaking it is the ability to travel in your spiritual form. There are countless techniques, seemingly unique for each person. It IS possible because everyone does it even though they don't realize it. People often do it in their sleep. If you've ever had a dream that seemed very real, detailed, vivid, accurate, if you could control what happened in the dream or could fly... things like that. http://www.mysticweb.org This site has a forum where people who do AP provide knowledge, their own experiences, etc. They offer courses in PDF format on a weekly basis but you must register and take it seriously. They also provide gatherings for people willing to attend/travel in person. I've known of this site for many years. Edit - To offer my own experiences, when I was 8 or so I was sleeping in the mid-afternoon. I was floating in the air in my closet that didn't have one of those slide-to-fold doors on it. I turned around and saw myself asleep in bed. It was a bit fuzzy but very realistic. At that point I wanted to wake up so i closed my eyes and when I opened them, I awoke in my bed. I got up and walked over to the closet and felt strange.

I decided to pick up one of my older hardware-based projects today and get it near completion. The system specs are somewhat unknown as of yet since I have been tinkering inside the case more than I have the OS. When I first turned the PC on the PSU sounded literally like a miniature lawnmower. I figured as it is such an old system which I won't be doing anything intensive with, I shouldn't have any heat problems. I decided to remove the aged lawnmower fan from the PSU. First I took the cover off. For anyone whose never seen the inside of an old PSU, enjoy. Mind the dust and gunk. Another angle for your viewing pleasure. Some dust/gunk cleaned off, fan removed. The workings of the PC once everything is set up. Some elastics, cablegami and an unusual power connector which I might fit in place with some foam or something later. I knew this wouldn't reduce any noise as the HDD is so old (although it's not that noisy), but I wanted to give it a comfy spot to live inside the box in return for its loyalty to my fiancee's mother in the past years. I likely won't put a fan in the front where I cut out the grill, but if I have some spare change and am feeling ambitious, I might put a window in the side panel as well as the front... but not before putting some sort of rubber over the edges. Well, that's all for tonight. My lips taste like metal and my hands are dry, rough and worn out from using pliers, tin snips and the dremel. Cheers. More @ My Blog (Always a work in progress btw )

There are plenty of freeware programs available for XP for whatever you need to do.

How can I make programs on my task bar not automatically open on start
Jeremy replied to deanderose's topic in Windows XP
@Crahak, While I know 3rd party alternatives such as AutoRuns are much more advanced then msconfig, it is sufficient for general users. Especially when they simply need to clean out everything that's loading up. But yes, AutoRuns is awesome. Check out this screenshot. -
So go and get CDs or DVDs. CD/DVD burners and a 50-pack spindle are dirt cheap nowadays. Or spend the same amount of money on a 4GB flash drive. Or download a trial of a commercial partition manager, create a small partition and move your files to that. I wouldn't recommend an upgrade. This could cause problems later down the road. It's always best to backup your data, boot to the XPCD, format and install. But no, if you upgrade, your files will remain.

I'll second NetLimiter. I've used it before and it's looks quite nice.

Advertisements have taken over my home page.

In addition to using Spybot after you update it, use Ad-Aware SE or the 2007 Beta 4. It sounds like you have a browser hijacker. You probably got suckered into clicking a flashing bouncing box that told you something was wrong with your PC. In any case, I suggest you also download a trial of Kaspersky Anti-Virus, update it and do a full system scan for malware. If you're using IE, I'd advise you to turn off ActiveX and any scripting options, or use Firefox or Opera. -
For a program that is 3 years old and to tell you you have to be a member of something you've never been associated with in the past in order to use it, is very strange. I have no idea why that would be happening or how you would go about getting around it. The fact of the matter is it would likely save you a lot of time, headache and money to use something modern and free that is probably a lot better than 3 year old software. Take a screenshot of what it says to you next time it appears if you like. I don't think it would help that much but it's worth a shot.

If that doesn't work, you will have to perform a repair installation with your Windows XP Installation CD.

How can I make programs on my task bar not automatically open on start
Jeremy replied to deanderose's topic in Windows XP
Start > Run > msconfig > Startup > uncheck the ones you wish not to load during startup. This will take effect after the next reboot. -
If you read the first rule of this forum, you will know that that is piracy and thus illegal. Further discussion about this will not be tolerated on this forum. Just warning you.

Since the software is so old, I'd suggest switching to a new image program such as IrfanView, XnView, Picasa2, Paint.NET or The Gimp. All of which are freeware. Try them out.

That particular file could not be read properly from the disk. Make sure there are no scratches or debris on the disk. If after cleaning it with a soft cloth it does not work, you may have to obtain a new installation CD from your friend at the computer shop.
