  1. Recovory console FixMBR Apply SP2 crack Install SP2 Go about your business. I think thats how most will handle the situation. When I read stuff like this always know that crack is involved. Either by the users who will be getting around Microsoft’s anti piracy efforts or being smoked by the people writing articles like this one.
  2. What I was trying to say was that I am at the end of where highspeed internet is available. If I lived across the road I would have no choice but dialup. This was a detrmening factor when we bought the place. We wanted to be out in the country but broadband was a must as I run my own servers. As far as the IP goes my internal ip is: 192.168.x.x My external is: ---censored---- And those sig's that try to tell me they know my IP always says: 63.165.173.x Advertising your ip is not a great idea
  3. sven, your signature is incorrect. My Jedi mind tricks must work because the IP it shows is not even close to what it really is. I have never seen one of those identify my IP right.
  4. I live in a small town (pop. 1649) in southern Idaho called Filer. I am actually 2 miles south of town. That's about as far as I could go and still get a good DSL connection.

    Port Removal

And get a better understanding of how it work and much more. You can acomplish what you want You get to learn something new Sounds like a win, win situation to me. PS. for the best bang for the buck I would suggest finding an old computer and installing something like Clarkconnect, M0n0wall, IPCop or smothwall.

    Port Removal

Outlook express is not webmail. However, if you block port 25 (SMTP) and 110 (POP3) you should be good to go. How you do that on an individual machine I don't know, I do all of my blocking at my Linux firewall.
  7. Are you sure? I just went there with IE and installed the activeX control and did not get any new users accounts. I even rebooted and nothing.

    Port Removal

I think web mail runs through port 80, the same as any other web site. If you block webmail by port you will also block web browsing. I very well could be wrong about this because I'm not sure how webmail works. But I believe it just sends a request to the server via the browser(port 80), the server assembles the page with the information and sends it back, no other ports are needed. At any rate, port blocking should be done at the gateway for a fair sized network.
  9. What I do is have my files on a share on one of my servers. Anything that gets installed at the RunOnce part installs from the network share. That way I just update the files at the server. I originally did this because not every thing I wanted loaded would fit on a CD and none of my workstations have a DVD.
  10. Thanks for the heads up! My wife has a Fleet credit card and she's the type who would fall for this.
  11. So I guess you can just copy the CD contents to a hard drive and then throw that drive into any computer and it will boot. No you can’t, it has to be installed, mainly the boot loader. Without installing it onto the drive, it will not boot. Also, I guess I am not saving settings and such on my BartsPE hard drive because it is just like a CD. I also guess I didn’t get IE working on a BartsPE hard drive install after it was on the hard drive. Like I said, I have six box’s running it and all were configured after the install, er, I mean file copy. I guess it’s a matter of your definition of install. Because it wont boot if you don’t run the hard drive installer, I call it an install. Because I can alter it after running the installer I call it an installation.
  12. Is Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration enabled? It is by default and unless you disabled it your locked down.
  13. No, after installing onto the hard drive no CD is needed. It will run from the hard drive ie, installed and running off of the hard drive. BartsPE is the only OS on the drive. I have six boxs running this way. All they do is load up a termenal service session and log onto the server. I use BartsPE because I need a mimimal install that will just load network and a TS client. I have another box that is just for browsing questionable sites, it uses Mozilla Embeded and runs off of a 256mb flash card. I set this one up just to see if I could. PE is installed and running on thses boxs.
  14. Every time I've done it I just boot to the BartsPE CD and run the hard drive installer. It has never failed me yet.
  15. Yes you can install it right on to a hard drive!!! From BartsPE web site: BartPE Harddisk Installer The pehdinst.cmd script installs BartPE to harddisk. There are 2 ways: Install BartPE next to your existing Windows 2000/XP/2003 operating system (using boot.ini). This will: Install peboot.bin and peldr. Add peboot.bin to your boot.ini file. Remove \minint and \programs directory and copy it again from source. This is a pretty safe way of installing BartPE to harddisk. Install BartPE, as the primary OS. This will: Delete all partitions on disk 0 and create a new partition and a NTFS volume for BartPE (only the first time) Remove \minint and \programs (if exists) and copy it again from source. Be careful! All files to use BartPE Harddisk installer are included with PE Builder.
  16. I’m sure the list of thing that can be done with a stock XP install is a lot longer then the list of things that can be done with a reduced install of XP. If you really believe that, sure. If it doesn’t get loaded it doesn’t use memory. So if a service is set to disabled it will take no resources. If it is set to manual it will use no resources until it is needed. If a program is not running at startup it will use no resources and it will use no resources until it is run. All a reduced install really does is uses less disk space and reduces the functionality of the OS. That’s why I say if you want a small footprint XP OS then you should start with a PE. Anyone who thinks PE is a recovery tool doesn’t really understand what PE is. Using it for a recovery tool is just a side effect of what it can do. It is designed to be an embedded OS that starts with next to nothing so developers you add only what is needed for the device it will be running on. In fact Microsoft doesn’t support its use as a recovery tool. The only ones that are supposed to have MSPE are developers of such embedded devices. However, it is nice that some have found a way to use it as a recovery tool because it’s great for that too. In my opinion to build a minimal system, it would be easier to build up, only adding what you want instead of ripping out what you don’t need.
  17. I have seen PE installs with IE present. I guess the real question is what do you want to do with this computer?
  18. Could you repackage it in a zip please? I hate rar’s simply because I have to load another little program just to view a file type that I may run across once every couple of months.
  19. Why not just instal something like BartsPE?
  20. By not paying the bands that make the music By extorting money frome anybody anyway way they can
  21. I've got a possable dumb question. What's the big deal with Gmail? I don't understand the appeal.
  22. Because he has a 3 year service contract he should call Dell and get a new modem because I'll bet it's a bad modem.
  23. Have you installed the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard?
  24. Hook up the drive In “My Computer” right click on the drive and select “Properties” Choose the “Hardware” tab Highlight the drive and then click on the “Properties” button Click on the “Policies” tab Choose “Optimize for performance” Click “OK” That should do it.
  25. I would guess it might be JULY 21, 2004, like the original poster stated That's almost a month away yet.
