  1. That's about the dumbest thing I ever heard. I'm far from spoiled rich and I find that XP will run on a 800Mhz machine with 256 megs of ram just fine. If someone can't meet those requirements then that's there problem, not mine. And I'm not going to waste my time with them. For me, it's just not worth it.
  2. rdesktop, the Linux Remote Desktop client is very fast and works well. Even though Linux is not an option, you might want to look at Thin Station. BTW, Linux would be the best solution here. As far as locking down a 9x machine... well.... that's a joke, right.
  3. That is dead wrong! Read here. You may be thinking of FAT16. Read here. BTW, NTFS is the only way to go.
  4. What I do is use XP for my desktop and 2003 for my servers. This is a good example of one of the problems of useing a server OS for desktop use, and the problem isn't with the server OS, it's with the app installer that checks the OS.
  5. Mybe it's an overheating alarm. What's the temp of your cpu?
  6. You might have better luck asking here. This has nothing to do with Windows NT4/2000/2003. BTW, what program are you downloading that is giving you the error and is it Windows ME compatable?
  7. Remote Desktop into a Windows 2k or 2k3 server is admin only. If you want non-admin users to remote in you need Termenal Services. Or use something like Dameware or VNC.
  8. This would mean you would have to go to each computer too but you could edit the hosts file and point the routers IP to 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.0. As far as doing it at the router, that would depend on what router you are using. I have never seen such a feature on a SOHO router. What kind of a router do you have?
  9. I will not install 98, period. I won’t even work on a 9X machine. If someone is to cheap to buy XP or can't afford a PC that will run XP, I, like Microsoft, will no longer support them. If they can't afford to upgrade then they **** sure can't afford to pay me to work on their machine. IMO, if you do it for free you’re just a gluten for punishment. If you mess with 9X on your own box for your own enjoyment, that’s a different story.

    No Programs?

This is a guess but: You are probably on a domain at work. At work you get the start menu information from the domain controler/Active directroy. At home you are not logging into the domain so no infromation is loaded. And that might be why you get nothing at home. Try logging onto the local machine at home. You also might want to ask the admin at work how to make this work. Otherwise, you my not get the results you want.
  11. Or Quicken, Quickbooks, Norton AV, or any of the hundreds of popular programs that need mshtml.dll to run. IE,OE,and Help are not the only programs that use it. However, if your happy with limited functionality then more power to you. I personally like all the bells and whistles and don't really see the point in intentionally crippling an OS. BTW, I think nLite is a great little program but whenever I have used it to remove certen components it has cauesed me problems down the road.
  12. WOW, I'm the IT Director and that is my life. Thank you for the third person perspective of my average day.
  13. The "IE core" is where the html rendering happens, not IE. So removing just IE and leaving the core you still have the part that causes the security problems. If you remove the core most of explorer (the file manager) will not work right, hence, a mangled mess. On your W2k box, do you have a mshtml.dll file in your system32 folder? If you do you still have the IE rendering engine installed. Without it things like help files, Office XP/2003 (not sure about 2000), Quicken, Norton AV, and many other programs will not work right or work at all. This thread has a bit more info on the subject.
  14. I ran into a similar situation and ended up installing VMWare on the server and then loading an older OS in VMWare to run the PITA software.
  15. Yes you can remove a lot of the IE wrapper but if you remove the mshtml.dll and the other supporting files you will have a non working Windows OS. It's the mshtml.dll and supporting files that needs most of the sucurity patchs. So I guess your right, you can remove it but you will have such a mangled mess it begs the question.....Why?
  16. I've got to ask......Why? No you can't remove it. No you can't downgrade it.
  17. Or right click on "My Computer" and choose "Propeties". The first tab will tell you what SP is installed.
  18. Why would you put roxio goback on an XP computer? The built in system retstore is far better and fully supported. As far as your partitions, what NTFS compatable DOS did you use? You should be able to boot to your XP CD and do a repair install (not recovory console) and be OK.
  19. What you want to do is what the Wine developers have been working on.
  20. Sounds like you need to move to an OS with an NT kernel. The 9x login is not secure and cannot be made so.
  21. Not only do I think this would be real stupid on Microsofts part but also not possable. To many people write their own code for their own needs.
  22. Windows 9x/ME does not support dual processors. 9x kernels can only recognize and use one processor. If you thought it was faster it was just you imagination.
  23. I doubt it. One is a desktop OS and the other is a server OS.
  24. This thread is funny. And I can thank the 98 people for that.
