  1. That's a nasty one... You will have to look for services and other *.exe files not to mention *.dat and *.dll files. Boot into safe mode and delete away... if you hold your mouse pointer over a file it will give you a brief description but more importantly it will show if the file is signed and who signed it. Delete all unsigned files. I saw a similar thing on a machine after SP2 and it was just a matter of looking at file dates and any of the above mentioned file types was dated after August 4th it got deleted. Write the file names down and after deleting suspect files search the registry for each file name. Some will show up so you must delete those keys. Kill bad services Delete files in Safe Mode Scour Registry Took me two hours to clean the system. Deleted over 30 *.exe, 40 *.dll, and about 10 *.dat files in all. Search Google for this string: sp.html#22776
  2. Start>> Right click on your machine name (MY computer) and select Properties. Select the Remote tab. Click on the Select Remote Users button and select the users for Remote Access.
  3. Still depends on the the available resolution on the remote machine...
  4. No... I've never had a problem copying anything from anywhere. I have had some Web pages block copying text but a quick look at the source and the text was there for the copying...
  5. NTFS is NTFS... does not matter how it is done...
  6. On Network Indentification choose Workgroup instead of Domain... Reboot
  7. There is a new RDP client out since SP2... If you are sitting behind a hardware firewall, open port 3389 UDP.
  8. The two installs only applied to MS Office suites... not any MS operating systems... read the EULAs...
  9. It is legal for him to load his machines at work. His company paid for the VLK (Volume License Key). It may or may not be legal for him to bring it home and load all his machines at home. (Depends on his license at work) It is illegal as hell for him to give you a copy of that Corporate disk for you to use if: the license agreement states that the disk is for work use only (X amount of machines in your office), then he has violated the license agreement and you would be also in violation. If the license says good for 100 installs and your boss's machines are installs 109, 110, 111, 112, and your installs go like 113, 114, 115, 116... your 16 installs past the license agreement and in violation. You would need to purchase more CALs. On the other hand if your corporate license allows for 100 installs and your boss has only used 85 installs at work, then it might be considered acceptable. Basically MS ships you a single disk and VLK key instead of 100 disks with seperate keys.
  10. Is the Toshiba PCX1100U Cable Modem on the 2003 Hardware Compatability List? XP drivers may or may not work for it. You should have a hardware firewall. You will have trouble with a USB connection. Get a real connection like a 10/100 Network card. $45 to $60 bucks for both items total. Get them and your cable internet will work.
  11. How does turning off power via the keyboard in BIOS require a different HAL? I have motherboards with this feature and it was a simple enable/disable and it certainly did not require a different HAL. You have 4 differnet HALs... ACPI, non ACPI, single CPU, multi-CPU.
  12. Turn off those features in the BIOS...
  13. The problem is with the offline address book configuration on your Microsoft Exchange Server. If the Exchange 2000 Server computer that is responsible for generating the offline address list is uninstalled and there is no replica of the Oab folder, the server component that generates the offline Address Book (OABGen) may not work. To create new site folders, you must use the Guidgen.exe utility. This utility is available in the in the Support\Utils\I386 folder on the Exchange 2000 Server CD. If you do not have access to this utility, download the Guidgen.exe utility from MS Support. The version available for download, works with either Exch 2000 or Exch 2003.
  14. 4 times? What was wrong with your system?
  15. You need this program Intel® Device View for Windows* v2.1.17 to manage your machines... That is the trouble with managed switches... Switch Firmware v2.76 dated 20-March 2003 This archive contains the Intel® Express 510T, 520T, 550T, or 550F switch firmware v2.76. Note: It is recommended that you install Intel® Device View 2.1.x or later before upgrading your switches to the v2.76 firmware.

  18. XP Home does not have the features you need. You could try Group Policy and restrict the user. But, I have never played with Group Policy and Home... It may not be there.
  19. What does ipconfig /all from the command line report?
  20. A router can be purchased for around $30 bucks... why fight with stoopid users and software configurations for DSL. $30 bucks and 5 minutes and your done...
  21. Get a Cable/DSL Router... your DSL connection can be set to always on... better protection than connecting directly to the Internet...
  22. Use passwords on all user accounts Both Windows XP Professional and Home Edition allow user accounts to utilize blank passwords to log into their local workstations, although in XP Professional, accounts with blank passwords can no longer be used to log on to the computer remotely over the network. Obviously, blank passwords are a bad idea if you care about security. Make sure you assign passwords to all accounts, especially the Administrator account and any accounts with Administrator privileges. By the way, in XP Home Edition all user accounts have administrative privileges and no password by default. Make sure you close this hole as soon as possible... Disable the Guest Account The guest account has always been a huge hacker hole, and should be disabled as soon as you install your workstation. Unfortunately, this setting recommendation only applies to Windows XP Professional computers that belong to a domain, or to computers that do not use the Simple File Sharing model. Windows XP Home Edition will not allow you to disable the Guest account. When you disable the Guest account in Windows XP Home Edition via the Control Panel, it only removes the listing of the Guest account from the Fast User Switching Welcome screen, and the Log-On Local right. The network credentials will remain intact and guest users will still be able to connect to shared resources of the affected machine across a network. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 300489 describes this behavior and states that it is by design. The best workaround for XP Home Users is to assign a strong password to the Guest account or upgrade to XP Professional...
