  1. Damaged CPUs either run or they don't because they are dead. There is usually no in between. Get a bigger heatsink/fan or at least make sure the one you have is clean from dust bunnies...
  2. Does the Laptop support USB in the BIOS? Is BIOS support for USB turned on?
  3. Are they all on different Subnets? Can you give the results of ipconfig/all? RRA may be the wrong approach.
  4. Win2K3 will not have true Firewall until SP1 ships incorporating Firewall features from XP SP2. If you want true Firewall abilities where packets are being dropped on the floor then get ISA 2000 or wait about a month for the new ISA 2004.
  5. Win2K3 requires strong passwords for Users. Don't try and over ride this feature as it is there for your Network's protection. Also no more Blank or Null passwords.
  6. Sounds like buggy software to me. If the second temp was accurate your machine would have already died a very ugly death... Do not trust 3rd party monitoring apps. What does your system BIOS report for System Health?
  7. Loose the Utility... MMC.EXE is the Management Console. You don't want to get rid of that program. Some of these "Utilities" cause more trouble than they supposedly fix...
  8. From Windows Explorer... Locate the directory of the first XP install and look for C:\Documents and Settings\UserAccount If your second XP install did not hose the original install location you should be able to find your Documents and Desktop. Where was your backup?
  9. What exactly are you trying to do? User experience for the Web Publishing and Order Prints wizards is similar, but the entry point for each wizard differs. For the Web Publishing wizard, a task is available on the left hand pane in most folders in the Windows XP system. The actual text changes slightly based on context, but if the user selects a file, the text “Publish this file to the web” will be displayed. Clicking on this text will start the wizard; selecting Next presents a choice of services. After a choice is made, the specified entry is connected to the site and the first of several HTML pages is downloaded. This HTML page is a single page in the wizard, exposed in the center pane, as with any wizard page. Through methods exposed in the windows.external object, the site can control where the Back, Next and Cancel buttons lead. Users might be asked to specify a folder to which they want to copy files, or the name of a new web site they wish to create. Eventually, after a user has completed these selections, the site can call a final Next method that will begin the upload. This command returns control to the wizard, which then begins the upload process, complete with thumbnails and progress. After the upload is completed, the website can specify a URL where the user can go after the wizard is closed. The process is similar for the Order Prints wizard, but it is launched from any picture folder, such as My Pictures, by a task called “Order prints online.” The services from which the user chooses are different, obviously; yet users can step through a process like the one in Web Publishing to select items such as print sizes, and to fill out credit card information. At the end, as with the Web Publishing wizard, the site calls a final Next command and upload begins. The user can then exit the wizard. Most importantly for both wizards, users have complete, end-to-end experiences. After the user has stepped through the pages of your service, you’ll want to upload the files. This is done in one of two ways: using WebDAV or using HTTP Post. The first method uses the new, improved file system redirector for the WebDAV protocol in Windows XP, and requires a WebDAV-enabled web server to accept the backend. (IIS5.0 and current versions of Apache support WebDAV and can be used here.) The other method is a multi-part HTTP Post. This is more common than WebDAV and, being well understood, is used by most sites today. However, WebDAV also allows you to expose a user’s share through a file system redirector in Windows XP. The Web Publishing Wizard will place a folder in My Network Places on the user’s machine after a successful publishing that maps to your site. This introduces a new way for users to interact and store their data, one that works seamlessly with any program that saves files in the regular manner on Windows. After uploading—you’re done. You’ve built a site that users can launch from an appropriate place, navigate easily and quickly, and upload their files to your service—for printing, serving, or just storing.
  10. Locate the file setup_wm.exe and run it.
  11. There is a known list of pirated VLKs. Those will definately be blocked from ugrading to SP2. If you need cheap MS software... sign up on the Microsoft Partners website and order your own subscription to the MS Action Pack.
  12. Never put important information on a computer. If you do, never plug it in. If you plug it in, don't turn it on. If you turn it on, all bets are off... The ONLY means to real security is a standalone hardware firewall which requires you to disconnect it from network to configure it. One that does Stateful Packet Inspection and drops "bad" packets on the floor... Any software firewall that can be installed by you the user can also be uninstalled by a clever hacker...
  13. It would have to be supported by the video card or video chip set in your laptop. If the VC does not have software to extend or split the screen then your best bet is to purchase a desktop system that would support the features you desire.
  14. Clean install and SP1 with current HotFixes applied? Where are you trying to access the 2nd HD from?
  15. Vegas 5 with network rendering...
  16. Pirates are not forced at gun point to obtain or use pirated software. They do so by choice. MS has every right as owner of the content to not allow those who pirate software to update their systems. EVERYONE has the free choice to abide by the ELUA or not to. There are many alternatives to MS software…
  17. Is the ASUS A8NX-E Deluxe on the Win2K3 HCL (Hardware Compatability List)?
  18. You can change any Drive letter except the Root or Boot install partition drive letter.
  19. <<What if I don't need the domain - how do I get past it? >> You don't... DCPromo is for setting up Active Directory. First thing it does is install DNS and then AD. SYSVOL is a function of AD. If you don't want a Domain then don't run DCPromo.
