  1. MCE 2005 has to do the ripping for DRM reasons.
  2. Before you switch motherboards, go into Device Manager and delete all motherboard specific hardware. Delete everything without rebooting. Boot into XP and let Plug and Play find all the new motherboard hardware.
  3. You can't and that is by design because of IRQ sharing...
  4. Since the upgrade will be free... why not? I have only been buying Opteron and Athlon 64 for the last 6 months. When it is out we will migrate...
  5. Virtual PC 2004 only runs on Windows XP. If you want to run virtual OSes on Windows 2003 Server you will need Virtual Server 2005.
  6. Start here: Streaming Media Server Role in Win2K3
  7. Isn't that the main reason for business to exist? To make money...
  8. "To summarize, if you are updating your machines using a SUS or WUS server running on Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, and you are not using a remote database for the WUS server, no CALs are required to update these machines. In all other situations, you need a a Windows or Core CAL for each machine running WUS or SUS that you are updating." WUS will require a database if it is to be effective. Since that database can't run on Win2K3 WE, it will require a seperate machine with Win2K3 and the database plus the CALs to connect to that database. If you stick WUS on a Win2K3 Standard server box with the approiate CALS, plus SQL for the WUS database, you are covered. Sticking WUS on Win2K3 WE will not save you any money...
  9. What are you still doing with NT??? Put it to rest and move to a newer platform with better tools... With the time your wasting on keeping NT alive you could have been migrating onward and been saving dollars...
  10. If SQL 2000 won't run on Win2K3 Web I doubt WUS will either. It was designed to just run IIS6.
  11. It will suck dead rabbits with 256Megs and a PIII! Aim higher... Like a fast P4 and a Gig of RAM... Check out a live demo of MCE 2005. Nothing in XP Home or Pro comes even close to what you get in MCE 2005.
  12. Win2K3 Enterprise with 25 Cals is more like $3899.00 from IBM. There is no legit source for Enterprise w/25 Cals in the $800 dollar range...
  13. Most folks switch the Win2K3 role because they can and because they think it is Win XP on steriods. I don't think the folks paying for Win2K3 with 25 Cals even dream of Win2K3 as a workstation. It's mainly the folks with nothing better to do...
  14. 1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Microsoft grants you the following rights provided that you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA: 1.1 Installation and use. You may: (a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or other device; and (B) install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable device for the exclusive use of the primary user of the first copy of the Software. 1.2 Alternative Rights for Storage/Network Use. As an alternative to Section 1.1(a), you may install a copy of the Software on a network storage device, such as a server computer, and allow one access device, such as a personal computer, to access and use that licensed copy of the Software over a private network. You must obtain a license to the Software for each additional device that accesses and uses the Software installed on the network storage device, except as permitted by Section 1.4 of this EULA. 1.3 License Grant for Remote Desktop. You may use remote access technologies, such as the Remote Desktop features in Microsoft Windows or NetMeeting, to access and use your licensed copy of the Software, provided that only the primary user of the device hosting the remote desktop session accesses and uses the Software with a remote access device. These remote desktop rights do not permit you to use the Software on both the device hosting the remote desktop session and the access device at the same time. Kind of "gray" I think...
  15. Failing power supply?
  16. A Hub shares bandwidth and a Switch dedicates bandwidth per connection.
  17. You have to change the HAL to make it work if you can. It may of may not work. If it does not work you will have to reinstall and accept the single CPU HAL. Basically your hardware is just too old to run a multi CPU HAL. Besides it will run dog slow...
  18. I just threw all my floppy disks out yesterday... you should to. I had not used a floppy disk in over 2 years! Start using a boot CD... Floppies are dead!
  19. It will run but it will be S L O W on the hardware you mentioned...

  21. Spoke with an MS rep last Thursday and was told that SP1 code had gone Gold...
  22. Not is you put Win2K on a seperate partition. You can fix the boot after Win2K is installed. They can't both exist on the same partition!
  23. That is not the install ISO... you downloaded SP1 for Win2k3 X64
  24. Chkdsk run without the "/r" switch does nothing! It must be run with the "/r" switch to fix and repair any damage. You must run it till it comes up clean with no errors. It may take several passes to accomplish this. If it can't repair the damage... your HD may be toast...
