  1. Boot from your XP CD and start the Install process. Select the 2nd Repair Option. That will replace all your XP system files but leave your system settings and data files you have created untouched. When that process has finished go to Windows Update and download any updates including SP2.
  2. By default you must authenticate each time. If you disable automatic authentication you open a huge hole in your network security. As anyone sitting at that machine could fire up Remote Desktop and have Admin access to your server.
  3. The 2nd CD is the guts of MCE 2004.
  4. Can't be done without the extender.
  5. Let windows manage your pagefile... and yes you need a pagefile despite the fact that you have 4GB or RAM. It will manage better and faster than you could on your best day...
  6. RDP uses port 3389. Your router must forward to that port on your Win2K3 machine.
  7. You should be using the "/R" switch instead of the "/F" switch. "/R" implies "/F". "/F" only fixes and does not recover data.
  8. I don't recall gamers on the top of the Microsoft jinga tower of users with seriuos needs and serious systems. You can all speak of your wishes but the reality is there will be only a single SKU for XP Pro x64. Don't care for that reality, then just hold your breath until MS caves in... So the reality is this... if you are a gamer and want a 64bit MS operating system, then your choice and only choice from MS is XP Pro x64... I'd like a flat planet but unfortunately it is round and I think it will stay that way for some time to come...
  9. Turning off services has nothing to do with security. If you want advanced security then get yourself a copy of Win 2003 server.
  10. Seriously folks... just how many of you XP Home users are currently using Pro Engineering? Some of the Pro E apps start @ $20K per app. You are going to install those apps on XP Home? Now that is funny... You can poo poo all the XP Pro features you don't like but it is the bread and butter of the business world. Workstations will remain in that world only because people actually get things done on them...
  11. XP Home will never be considered for x64. Why? Think of the workstation market. You have a design shop using Pro Engineering on their workstations... and they are going to use XP Home??? That is not the market for x64. I'm running XP Pro x64 RC2 and it is running circles around 32 bit XP Pro.
  12. The confusion lays in the fact that the user approves what is allowed through the Windows Firewall. The user has full control, not Microsoft.
  13. Don't like it, then don't use it...
  14. Microsoft will offer a swap... give us your XP Pro disk and we will ship you a x64 bit version for free.
  15. Is your domain name fully qualified? As in registerd with one of the naming authorities. If not you should be using storename.local instead of storename.com. Sounds like the "eddie" account is lacking proper permissions to log into the DC. Did you add "Eddie" to any Groups?
  16. How about the RSOP (Resultant Set of Policy) tool? Observe changes to your GPO before they are applied. Look for it in your MMC console.
  17. Remember with Drivespace you are forced to compress the entire partition. NTFS allows you to compress a folder or a single file or a hundred single files in a hundred folders, doesn't matter. You are not forced to compress the entire partition.
  18. The root of C:\pagefile.sys. Or where ever you decide to put it, windows does not care.
  19. April
  20. Loose Norton forever... Reinstall XP with SP2 intergrated... You are not going to fix this problem. Your welcome to beat the dead horse around the block but it won't help you. Your install is hosed! Move forward...
  21. Did you configure backups yet?
  22. Don't forget the AMD Opteron socket 940...
  23. Get the right drivers... it will not work until you do.
  24. Why bother to backup possible corrupted data? He is running FAT32 which has no provisions to protect data from corruption. Use a Bart PE CD or a Knoppix CD and see if you can access the hard drive from there. If you can access the data save what you can through file transfer. This is just another blaring reason not to use FAT32...
  25. Is it any wonder why you get BSODs...? Don't use 3rd party tools! Every 3rd party utility just adds another layer of complexity to an already complex system.
