  1. Although I still think that SATA1 drives are **** and not worth buying for current-generation PATA-enabled mobos, I do agree that SATA2 with NCQ on a PCIe-mobo is the next standard (2006?). The SATA cost-to-benefit ratio has definitely improved in the last year, IMHO mainly due to enterprise application of SATA raid boxes (IT depts are slavering over the SATA-to-SCSI cost ratio as we speak).
  2. OK, here are the lines stripped straight from my WORKING unattended CD (s/n removed, of course: ;Alcohol120 Registration [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120%\Info] "SerialNo"="-" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120%\Info] "SerialNo"="-" The other lines are not necessary AFAIK, the app doesn't complain for me. I hope ppl quit posting wrong key strings for this app, I had to try a buncha times before getting this because of wrong advice (although glad to accept any help offered...) Good Luck!
  3. MOVED: Check out this thread for the ENGLISH VERSION unattended installer. Good Luck!
  4. OK, here's the final ENGLISH VERSION installer from my unattended XPCD: ; AutoIt Version: 3.0.102 ; Language: English ; Platform: Win9x / NT ; Author: nateklomp ; Script Function: Install Agnitum Outpost Firewall Professional v2.1.303.314 Run("outpost.exe") Sleep(5000) WinWaitActive("Welcome") WinActivate("Welcome") ControlClick("Welcome","","Button1") WinActivate("License Agreement for Outpost Firewall 2.1") ControlClick("License Agreement for Outpost Firewall 2.1","","Button3") WinActivate("License Agreement for Outpost Firewall 2.1") ControlClick("License Agreement for Outpost Firewall 2.1","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Read Me File") WinActivate("Read Me File") ControlClick("Read Me File","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Choose Destination Location") WinActivate("Choose Destination Location") ControlClick("Choose Destination Location","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Start Installation") WinActivate("Start Installation") ControlClick("Start Installation","","#327701") ControlClick("Start Installation","","Button1") Sleep(5000) WinWaitActive("Auto-configuration") WinActivate("Auto-configuration") ControlClick("Auto-configuration","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Application") WinActivate("Application") ControlClick("Application","","Button6") WinActivate("Application") ControlClick("Application","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Network") WinActivate("Network") ControlClick("Network","","Button6") WinActivate("Network") ControlClick("Network","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Installation Complete") WinActivate("Installation Complete") ControlClick("Installation Complete","","Button1") WinWaitActive("Install") WinActivate("Install") ControlClick("Install","","Button3") EXIT You can also silently reg with this key (s/n removed of course): [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Agnitum\Outpost Firewall] "Key"="-" I've also attached the compiled EXE--change OutpostProInstall.exe to outpost.exe and run in the same dir (or in an SFX). I've tested it, this one's been working for me. Good Luck! OutpostProInstaller.exe
  5. Actually, SATA may be the standard, sometime in the future . However, It is not yet a proven technology (BETAMAX, anyone?), and probably won't be until its cost-to-benefit ratio improves. IMHO, your analogy is flawed...it's more like saying, "I'm going to buy a new car," then dragging yourself to a factory in Detroit to buy a "Concept" car. Following the same analogy, many "forward-thinking" (read:gullible) people during the 1970's gasoline crisis believed that the new (at the time) electric cars were the "future standard." They foolishly invested in an immature technology which has yet to enjoy nearly the success predicted over 30 years ago. The cost-to-benefit ratio just doesn't add up. Lunar Leaper: yes, AFAIK they behave exactly as a "native" (kludged) SATA drive. Actually, I'm unaware of ANY truly "native" SATA drives currently in retail. They're all using the same kind of bridge chip found on the PATA-SATA adapters.
  6. I've got a 200GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 SATA150 drive, $200US. A 200GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA133 drive at the same shop goes for $89US. They're exactly the same HDD, only the SATA has a kludge that allows it to run on SATA controller--same drive, different interface. Only noticeable difference is the CPU usage, ~20-25% lower when using the SATA controller. However, the same effect can be achieved with a ~$20 SATA-to-PATA adapter. The choice is clear...I just made the wrong one:'(
  7. I love you man!) I've been using the DVD Decoder 1.1 from the original ATI CD, it installs silently without switches and can be uninstalled via the cpl. In the immortal words of Mr. Popeil, "Just set it and forget it."
  8. Although /help lists a bunch of switches (i.e., /NO_UI /NOCANCEL etc..), only the /HELP, /SILENT and /WRITE_SN actually have any effect--I've tried them all.
  9. Definitely the LCD. I shelled out the cash last year for a 200gb Maxtor SATA(US$200), but could only afford a 14" LCD(US$120). The SATA drive performance is little better (if at all) than an el-cheapo PATA; but the monitor is so small...a regrettable decision, in retrospect.

  11. I agree, I'm using Outpost for that very reason. Plus, it's easy to configure (I know s**t about firewall configuration, BTW). Have you been able to set it up unattended? If so, would you please share your method? (I wrote an AutoIt script for it this AM but haven't had a chance to test it yet.)

  14. Anyone ever tried UPX'ing XP source? I've read it's useful to shrink up W98SE installs... http://sourceforge.net/projects/upx/
  15. Stay away from Maxtor HDDs, they tend to be noisy.

  17. Hey, Great, finally got it to work... Install.cmd: --- ECHO .Installing NetZero free internet access client... start %systemdrive%\INSTALL\Netzero.exe /S ECHO Completing Installation... start %systemdrive%\INSTALL\close.vbs ECHO. Closing Netzero Client... start %systemdrive%\INSTALL\close.vbs ECHO .Killing Netzero application... TASKKILL.EXE /F /IM exec.exe --- close.vbs: --- Set WshShell=WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WScript.Sleep 1000 WshShell.Sendkeys"~" --- Seems obvious, now that you've shown me how to use a VBS. Alternately, I suppose I could have done this: close.vbs: --- Set WshShell=WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WScript.Sleep 1000 WshShell.Sendkeys"~" WScript.Sleep 5000 WshShell.Sendkeys"%{F4}" --- Unfortunately, it seems kinda risky in an unattended setup. Thanks again!
  18. Thanks Mate, Unfortunately it doesn't work as intended, rather it "corrupts" the application install. Also, it can't be run with a start /wait previous--it won't kick off until after the /wait is reconciled, so you have to click on the alert box anyway. Ah, well...some things just have to be manually installed, I guess.
  19. Hello All, I use Netzero for backup dial-up connection, and would like to include the client in my unattended installs. Here's what I've got so far: ECHO Installing NetZero 7.0 Client... ECHO Please wait... start /wait %systemdrive%\Apps\Netzero.exe /S ECHO. ECHO Killing Netzero.exe process taskkill.exe /F /IM exec.exe It works ok except that the installer opens a pop-up alert box warning to "close all browser windows before proceeding" which has to closed before batch can continue; what I'd like to know is how to disable it...
