  1. Hiya, The "Found New Hardware" prompt won't show up if you: A. don't remove SCSI drivers with nLite, or B. install from CMDLINES.TXT (my preference). Good Luck!
  2. Hiya, You can create a "software RAID" in XP(PRO ONLY!) via the Logical Disk Manager, using dynamic disks: Windows XP Resource Kit Chapter 12: Disk Management
  3. Not necessarily; I've run into problems with VIA IDE controllers on some SOYO and FIC boards, for instance, that only occur intermittently..some like the aforementioned problem, others like: can't boot from primary IDE although secondary boots OK; secondary IDE not recognized until warm reboot, etc. By "straight IDE," do you mean your ATA PCI card or the onboard IDE? If it's happening to drives connected through the PCI card, check for a BIOS update for the card (I've updated the BIOS for my Promise ATA card several times since I got it). Does the problem recur when connected to the onboard IDE, or only from the card? Of course, this advice given taking for granted that you've already performed basic troubleshooting practice, i.e. removing all parts not affected and working up from there...
  4. Hiya, Perhaps a MOBO issue (short, bad ide cable, connector) ? The molex's from the PSU are connected in series, so this doesn't matter. However, if you're worried about your power, maybe you should check your PSU (use a circuit tester/multimeter, BIOS voltage reporting isn't always accurate). Good Luck!
  5. Hiya Folks, I ordered on April 9th, when this thread started. I'm excited to try it, especially as it'll be (almost) my first Linux experience. I say almost because I have tried to try a couple of Linux distros; each time I tried I got a message from "live" CD, KERNEL PANIC! followed by a lockup. Anyhow, I'm eagerly awaiting my CD... Question: has anyone gotten theirs yet? It's only been ~4 of the ~6 weeks Ubuntu stated it's take, so I'm not too worried yet, just wondering. Thanks!

  8. AFAIK, Tiny and KPF (old version) are the same, just changed names... My Netzero dialup software won't work with them, so I'm unsure of their performance. I've used Outpost Pro, it's pretty good but tends to hog up and I'd really recommend it only to folks who have a lot of patience in setting it up. I last used their first SP2-enabled version, it was terribly buggy and support is nearly nonexistent. I'm not particularly firewall-literate, but it took me a good 2 weeks to get it set up properly, and even then it tended to "forget" settings. Outpost FREE is pretty good, bit easier to set up, but also buggy and stripped-down as well. AVG is probably the least resource-hogging autoupdating AV you can get for free.
  9. Hiya, This is usually indicative of DMA problems. Just a few general tips for you: 1. Install (or reinstall) chipset drivers (Intel infs or Via Hyperions), and RAID driver 2. Check IDE channels in device manager (under "IDE ATA\ATAPI Controllers"). Ensure "Transfer Mode=DMA if available" for channels in use, "Device Type=NONE" (NOT "Auto Detection") for free channels. 3. If you end up reinstalling, consider using "RyanVM's Windows XP Post-SP2 Update Pack" rather than manual hotfixing. Good Luck!
  10. Hiya, Make sure the DCOM service is started, Windows Defrag can't do anything without it (except open a gui) ; clicking either "analyze" or "defragment" will just do nothing, and no error message either. Command-line defrag will show an error message. Good Luck!
  11. Hiya, I've seen (heard, rather) something like this several times before, in those cases the noises were symptoms of dying PSUs...although it's entirely possible your HDD is on its way out. Is it an Hitachi/IBM? They're known for bearing problems, which lead to premature failure. You may want to check it out, especially be sure your PSU fan hasn't crapped out (wanna see your PC catch fire?). Good Luck!
  12. Hiya, As it turns out, most of the errors were specific to the VMWare install. The only holdout: Q331923 still says IE6SP1 isn't installed.
  13. Hiya, Thanks, works like a charm (except it can't install until after first logon, seems to kill W98Setup when running in "mini-windows" setup mode). Just what I needed!
  14. Hiya, Hurray, after some trial and error I finally got this one (took long enough): START /W WMP6CDCS.EXE /C:"SETUP_WM.EXE /Q:U /R:N" /Q:U /R:N (Change the :U to :A to remove progress bars.) Trick is, both installers need to be silenced in order for this to work unattended. The /C: switch passes on commands to the embedded installer (now that I look back, it seems lots of MS stuff is using this method). Live and learn. Good Luck!
  15. Hiya, I'm having a problem with IE updates...I've integrated the updates for IE6SP1 from MDGx's ietoy page and ERPMan's IE Updates page into my unattended CD, but can't get them to install. I get a message stating either I'm using the wrong version of Windows, or that IE6SP1 is not installed! IE6SP1 setup is the first thing I run during my 98SE install, then DX9, then SP2RC3. The IE updates are run via post-logon batch called from "Start Menu\Startup." I'm (reasonably) sure I've downloaded only the Win98 versions of the updates, and I'm positive IE6SP1 has been installed successfully. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!
  16. OIC, there's the problem then--I'm installing from CD. I'll just have to hold out for the final version, thanks!
  17. M. Coskun, Thank you for your prompt reply. I've attempted the slipstream using both RC2 and, now, RC3. I've followed your instructions exactly as outlined in the top post of the "Installation Guide for SE SP 2.0" topic. The installation seems to recognize the files exist, but then says "an error occurred loading (insert filename here). The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted." Strange. BTW, I always install using all options in the installer, it just requires an <Enter> keypress at the selection window in order to continue processing and another at the "INFEX" when it completes. I tried using an AU3 script here but it acts up under mini-windows, sometimes works fine on VM but then not at all on the test machine. Just these two keypresses away from automating the 2+hour install on this very much legacy equipment... Anyway, it seems I'll be sticking with the manual install for now. Thanks again for your time.
  18. Gape, Bravo! I've just completed installation of SESP20RC3.EXE, no problems apparent and installed smoothly. One question, can the SP be installed quietly or unattended? When using the "semi-slipstream" method I got a lot of errors (browse for file, etc.) during setup and immediately after first login, despite having extracted all the SP2.CAB files into the win98 source directory. Thank you for your time and your work!
  19. I'm pretty sure you'll want to skip W2K altogether, your PIII is more than up to the task of running XP (I'm running XP on several PII-400's) and XP tends to be more end-user friendly. It's usually got better support with both drivers, apps, and games. XP can be customized extensively or let alone, while I've always found the need to tweak the heck out of W2K in order to the same kind of gaming performance.
  20. Hiya, I've been banging around this problem for months (2-cd install, zipped entire admin install point--~300MB!--etc.), can anyone tell me why I can't get Office Shrink to work with Office 2000 on Windows 98 SE? It always seems to be working fine until ~80%, then "Cancel" button disappears and the install hangs. If I kill the process, shortcuts are in place but apps aren't installed. Using the full source+MST, installation is always successful. Perhaps it's having SP3 slipstreamed into my source? It's my only remaining guess...the same source is working fine on XP (yes, I used Office Shrink on a SP3-slipstreamed admin point, clean install of W98SE). Thanks, any input is appreciated!
  21. Hiya, Trying to cut some dead weight from my Win98 UA cd, and I came upon some stuff in directx_9c_redist.exe that was unnecessary: BDANT.cab>>NT4 BDAXP.cab>>XP dxnt.cab>>NT4 ManagedDX.CAB>>managedDX Removing these files saved me ~18MB!!! I've got the DirectX 9.0c February 2005 update, and it also contains: dxupdate.cab Feb2005_d3dx9_24_x64.cab Feb2005_d3dx9_24_x86.cab Feb2005_MDX_x86.MSI I don't use "managed DX," which of these files can I remove? These four files are ~4MB. Thanks!
  22. Hiya, I may be showing my ignorance, but...in my experience, using the "HKEY_USERS\" key has been problematic. Perhaps try replacing that entry with an HKCU or HKLM? Reg entries added for HKCU at CMDLINES are applied to the "default" or "system" user and so will apply to all users after first login anyway, right? Good Luck!
  23. Does this EXE (or the included .bat's) delete the regkeys noted, or does this need to be done manually?
  24. I started using batch cmd from [GuiRunOnce] section of winnt.sif, then found that some apps didn't install until after a reboot. So, I tried moving to RunOnceEx, but found it to be much less powerful than batch cmd, but very useful anyway because it runs after reboot. Then I found CMDLINES.TXT, best way to install yet--but many apps can't install at this stage (many errors). Now, I run most from CMDLINES, then run [GuiRunOnce] runs remaining apps and adds RunOnceEx keys to run anything that needs a reboot. So, I guess it's a 4-stage setup (perhaps it's time to simplify?).
