  1. first off, get Icesword open it and go to the processes section. end task on everything listed below (might wanna kill Spybot/ESET to to keep them from detecting the hijackthis removal process and blocking it) do not end task on these items individually. hold down ctrl and select all the processes you want to kill and then right click and click terminate process. then right click and refresh your view (Icesword doesnt auto refresh like taskmgr) if any of your processes are back in the list, then there is another helper process restarting them. attempt to locate it in the list and terminate both at the some time to prevent them from restarting each other. after the icesword task list is clean, use hijackthis! to remove the following items C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive\VistaDrive.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmm.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\updater\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WallChan.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Spike\LOCALS~1\Temp\ir_ext_temp_0\autorun.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VistaDrive] C:\WINDOWS\VistaDrive\VistaDrive.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PowerTweak Menu] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmm.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Updater] C:\WINDOWS\system32\updater\explorer.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CMWallpaperChanger] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\WallChan.exe"
  2. You're suggesting a setup that's less future-proof, provides little real-world performance benefit over DDR2-800, but that costs over twice as much? I'd say stick with the 2x2GB OCZ Platinum (it's what's running in this system) and leave the other two slots for future RAM upgrades. I've easily pushed my RAM (the same as he's planning on getting) to over 900MHz with the same voltages and timings. DDR2-1066 is money gone down the drain IMO. yeah that sounded less stupid when i said it. I've given up on leaving headroom in systems when i build them (ie: ill just fill 2 of the slots now and then ill have room for an upgrade later) because everytime ive done that i have never actually upgraded the system -i just replace it instead that position on upgrades isnt ideal for everyone. as for the huge price jump between his and the one i linked, i should have noted that I usually end up spending the same amount for the RAM as i do for the CPU (i have an irrational fear of cheap RAM) I know, thats the beauty of building your own systems. everybody 'Thinks Different' despite what the mac fanboys would have you believe.
  3. you could expect up to 100mb. i doubt the router maxes out at 10base. If you have a large amount of files to move and the pcs arent far from each other, just make a crossover cable and wire the 2 PCs in their own lan and if both card are GBit cards, you can see up to 1000Mb the other thing to try is see if the cards are being incorrectly set to 10Mbps Network Connection->Properties on the ethernaet adapter->Configure->Advanced Tab->Speed & Duplex-->set it to 100Mbps Full duplex(or 1.0Gbps Full Duplex if your router is Gbit) -you may have to repair the connection for it to take affect. do that on both machines and see if your speeds improve. if you lose connection after changing that value, just move it down to to 100 Half Duplex and if it stil doesnt work, just change it back to auto negotiation
  4. Page not found! I thinc i must be a member... no its just bad bbcode. use this link http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=247140
  5. looks good. id go 4x1gb on the ram though http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145179 thats what i have in mine and i love 'em you could save a 40$ with an evga card instead (which newegg has in a combo with a 750W PSU for the same price as your 650 (plus 15$ more on the mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130319 EVGA also has a step-up program in case you want to upgrade your card within 60 days of purchase I have those exact speakers too and they are awesome for games but movies/music they have way too much bass even with the sub amp cranked all the way down. on some shows i cant hear subtle dialog because the background music is causing my desk to rattle like the license plate on a riced-up civic. also, if you not in love with that heatsink, i recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835101014 im using it on my quad right now inside an Antec SonataIII and the cores are sitting at 36-39 degree range with just stock fans. i forget what the heat tops out at but its not bad at all. Ill take note of it nextime im ingame if your interested in that 'sink Also, it looks like your building a complete system but didn't add a mouse. if you already have one thats cool but if not, it would be frustrating to have to borrow one off an old PC for a brand new build. heres the one i have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826104015
  6. what edition are you running? i havent seen that in business, basic, or enterprise. and i just looked and couldnt find it on this business edition havent used premium or ultimate enough to have noticed it.
  7. no. SP2 is SP2. that doesnt change there are updates in addition to SP2 available (over 100 at least) that will be part of XP SP3 which should be out any day now
  8. 1. Stop dealing with the seller. 2. Call 1-800-R-U-LEGIT and tell them what you told us. then send any chatlogs/emails from the seller to them if they ask for them. 3. Let Microsoft deal with him lawyer-style I've heard of situations where a person has been scammed like this can receive a legit license in exchange for helping MS catch someone selling pirated software. I dunno if those are just old internet urban legends but i'd do it for free. seriously, whats the worst they can do to you? blacklist your serial on pirated copy? -i can almost guarantee thats already taken care of.
  9. strip it down to the PSU, MB and CPU remove ALL add on cards/drives/memory including video. dont just unplug drives from the board -also remove their power leads clear the CMOS use a different power on switch from another case or use the reset/chassis intrusion as a temporary -Mr screwdriver will work in a pinch if it powers up, add 1 stick of memory and repeat (clear CMOS every time if you have to) if it still powers up, keep adding thing until it doesnt
  10. https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicke...hp?p_faqid=2309 that goes through some general 'check to see if your an admin' junk but does link to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q227181 which details the registry keys that can cause this type of behavior. Im assuming this is XP Home because your profile says so -if its XP pro, then a group policy could be affecting the same settings so the fix might be different if you are running XP pro.
  11. no that is not the same card. -its too tall http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...quirements.mspx no idea if that includes aero or not. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150107 if you need something from amazon UK look at these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-6200LE-128MB-G...2906&sr=1-6 http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-PV-T44A-PANG-6...906&sr=1-22 http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Geforce-Graphi...133&sr=1-71 im guessing those dont have the low profile bracket though: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-LOW-PROFILE-BR...088&sr=1-44 finding a low profile, AGP 8x card with 256mb+ thats vista compatible is a pretty tall order.

  13. oh your using the tiny GX270! I now see that you specified desktop. i missed that part before there were 3 different gx270s -mine are all the 'big' mid tower exploding variety and any 4x/8x card will fit in them any half height AKA low profile agp card should work fine http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814145143 which would work because you can remove the VGA plug and use the included half height bracket (this is the tricky part -not all cards that can be used as half height include one) heres a similar card that uses VGA instead of DVI and also includes the bracket http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814145067
  14. looks like a problem. http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/board/...essage.id=46707 no fix there but this one looks better http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/board/...essage.id=49831 has this link: http://zonealarm.donhoover.net/privacy.html but i would just ditch zonealarm and get a real hardware firewall but thats just me.
  15. If the only active user on the system is the 'Administrator' account, then it will display on the welcome screen. If you create another user, it will hide the 'Administrator' account and only show your created user. from here you have 4 options: 1. delete the second user account that was created (please be 100% sure before deleting it because if my diagnosis of the problem is wrong, you may not be able to login) 2. on the welcome screen, have hit hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice in a row to close the welcome screen and display the 'Classic Logon' which will allow her to type in the username 'Administrator' and whatever password she normally used with that account 3. in Control Panel->Users Click 'Change the way users log on and off' and set it to 'Classic' to bypass the welcome screen and display the username/password box from option 2 4. edit the registry to show administrator on the welcome screen instructions for XP are here Changing that in Vista is more complex and not worth the trouble IMO.
  16. wow you are channeling my exact thoughts the first time i saw that way way back around 95 when it was still c:\My Documents or as it was known to most of the people i knew 'c colon backslash My-Doc-U tilde one' aka c:\MYDOCU~1 (don't even get me started on the problems started by c colon backslash Prog-Ra tilde one) I guess i should be thankful they didnt get the idea to do My-Desk tilde one we mocked win95 mercilessly. oooh look at me with 'My Computer' and 'My Documents' isnt that cute? -yeah right like id ever trust a folder made by my OS to not do something unexpected with my files. I had files in folders on the root, folders in the root, on other drives everything was scattered around and assumed that how everyones stuff was but then I did 6 years of phone support for a crappy ISP/PC manufacturer on systems running win 98FE,SE,ME,2K,XP but got out with only taking 1 out of scope call for a guy in thepiratebay's public beta of Longhorn before it was know as Vista. Their idea of support was if you can't fix it in 15 minutes, backup the customers files and run the restore disc(s) 49% of the people I talked to stored their files in their My Documents and nowhere else, 49% thought they stored their files in 'the modem' (which translated from user means case) but their files where actually in the "My Documents" folder. the other 2 percent knew where their stuff was and didn't want help backing it up. I'm now the systems admin at a college and its almost creepy how easy it is to back up and migrate these peoples data. These days I'm the one that makes the call on whether to wipe out a system and reload it so it rarely happens unless their is a hardware failure/replacement involved. to grab all of a persons files all i have to do is copy the My Docs, Desktop, and Favorites folders and plunck them onto the new drive and voila! you are done. all that said, it would be nice to be able to right click 'My Documents' and check 'Disable My Documents functionality for this user' we use a bunch of machines running DeepFreeze and have found if i leave the My Documents visible, is encourages people to save their files on the computer expecting them to still be there tomorrow and a few get angry when they realize what theyve done.
  17. LOL! I have 3 of those mounted to the wall in my office with busted caps! I thought i just got a bad batch. I use them as targets for my cable gun
  18. http://wud.jcarle.com/ProgramFiles.aspx also the topic immediately below the one you just created asked the EXACT same question
  19. Vista is a good OS. if you compare it with XP SP0, its a GREAT OS. It has a few issues that don't exist in XP but all in all, if the hardware is capable of it and good drivers are available for a given system, I would rather deploy a Vista machine than a XP SP2 (or SP3) machine. The first reason is my PCs are used by students. Some like using tech thats familiar to them while others feel like we are 'being cheap' if we have dont have the latest greatest software, then we are not teaching them anything that will be relevant to their future. (better example is office: no one wants to learn MS office 2003 once they know that MS office 2007 is different) The second being people treat newer technology better. if i deploy and old PC out to an area where it cant be monitored well, people will beat the hell out of it. You would think they would get more frustrated with newer tech but that hasnt been the case for years. In my environment, if its new it gets treated better if its old 'junk' then people get the impression that its ok to trash it. The third being that with XP there is so much about the OS that I have changed on my different builds its like working with 10 different OSes. XP seems like its just been patched so much that its struggling to keep up with the market. also the security in it seems like an afterthought (not that im a fan of UAC -actually the opposite i think its a step in the right direction for the home 'user' but too naggy for a corporate/academic enviroment) What I wish MS would have done with Vista was ship it in x64 and make the x86 version available (exactly opposite of what they did) because seriously, any new PC that ships with vista is gonna have an X64 core and anyone wanting to upgrade a 'high end' x86 only machine could still use the x86 version. but if they are actually planning on dropping 7 in 2009, if they drop it as x64 being the main version (or only version) then the decision to keep Vista primarily 32bit makes more sense. Unfortunately that would make Vista exactly what ME was supposed to be (a transitional product for older PCs) but if it means getting the PC market to using a 64 bit architecture, then its worth it because I think weve reached the limit of what we can do in x86.
  20. Wait, java has memory management? is that an optional component? how do you enable it? /sarcasm only memory management ive seen out of java is where it crashes, clearing its memory then you get to restart it fresh. but this could turn out to be good news for me since the main server I use mysql on these days runs on solaris.
  21. **** im good got it on the first guess. glad to see you got it working.
  22. i think he means smaller cable = not blocking airfow Im partial to pioneer myself but i usually just buy whatever drive has the most features for the $ i picked up an asus sata lightscribe DL dvd burner for 35$ from newegg for a change and im happy with it. burns fast burns well.
  23. Im not sure i follow you. the program changes my drive letter icons to the defaults without me requesting it to. it has nothing to do with reverse engineering
  24. there is an entire forum dedicated to doing exactly that http://www.msfn.org/board/Setup-Billboard-...indows-f92.html
  25. I couldnt find anything about cleaning out the winsxs folder but i did find this: http://aspoc.net/archives/2007/12/05/how-t...ctory-in-vista/ hopefully somebody write a util that can determine what stuf can be deleted from there safely (would love to see that added in CCleaner)
