  1. i find audacity hard to use. i'm looking for something more generic like ffdshow that does it to everything, just check the box; no manual editing needed. but thanks for replying i am still looking.
  2. i use ffdshow on windows to add stuff like crystality, freeverb etc to make my mp3s sound "fuller". i was wondering if there's something similar for linux? thanks.
  3. my printer keeps saying that the cartridge is jammed, and sure enough, when I go into service mode to check the print limits they have been reached, 1356 out of 1356. this printer is less than 6 months old.. is there any quick fix for it? not permanent, but just so i can get a piece of coursework printed for this week. i've tried solutions like setting ABS-M and ABS-P to 0 but they're already 0. thanks.
  4. the HD3870 reference cooler truly sucks, just look at the reviews. some amd partners have got better ones but still.. they're based from a poorly performing reference design. i'd just shell out for a 3rd party cooler. you will void the warranty but there's a small chance anything will happen. the accelero s1 rev 2 (and a 120mm fan) is excellent for the price.
  5. by any chance, are you with tiscali broadband? they keep on having problems with wlm randomly signing out...
  6. i don't get that problem with wmp11. i've installed wmp11 after countless formats and i've never needed to buy any licenses etc.
  7. i don't think so, maybe there's an option with nlite or something. what i do with ubuntu+vista is let vista install then https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Recoverin...stallingWindows but you have xp.. it should work because for me it reinstalls grub, so the os shouldn't matter.
  8. i think you can install xpe on normal pcs, but not sure on the specifics. i think it's a copy of xp for customization by oems. i don't think xpe offers the same kind of customizability that nlite does.
  9. i don't really agree with that since i got Windows 95 first time round, then all i changed was sausage of power to trackball and I got OS/2
  10. http://files.filefront.com/gameuxdll/;8055393;/fileinfo.html haven't tried it though. game explorer works fine for me, without any modification of any kind.
  11. wmp does most of that. only thing it doesn't is delete duplicates. there's an option to scan your pc for music etc, and automatically add it to your library. to add missing media info, just right click the album name, click find album info, type the album name, click next and click OK. simple as that. as for volume, i think you mean volume normalization? all of the song is adjusted to the same volume? i rip my cds to 320kbps mp3, use mp3gain on them http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/ and encode them to 128kbps WMA from that. works fine for me, and the quality/size is decent. mp3gain also supports batch normalizing, you can normalize tons of songs at the same time. wmp has it's own auto volume levelling but for me it decreases quality... mp3gain doesn't so may as well use that.
  12. kmplayer (google it) had a preset to block out practically all sound out and enhance the vocals. i can't remember how though.
  13. yeah, crossfire and sli, nothing to do with single cards
  14. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...eezer%2b7%2bpro for a heatsink. since you're only using 2.1, i'd skip on the sound card, onboard will be good enough. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827129009 i don't know if it saves money on the asus drive but you haven't shown the site you're getting it from, so i don't know the price and imo, lightscribe does not beat printing on cd/dvds. not through experience, but through pictures. and now the price has FINALLY gone down, the 8800GT is A MUCH better choice than the HD3870. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130318
  15. i'll forget about the dell ultrasharp, the 22" version received average reviews, and it has no composite inputs. i'll be getting the SM2232BW in about a day, unless anyone has takers that may beat it? EDIT do dual link dvi cables work on single link monitors? they should, but some people have reported them not working, but single links working. on ebuyer, one of the cheapest dvi cables is a belkin dual link, otherwise i'd save the hassle and get a single link cable. EDIT2 ordered the SM2232BW
  16. some decent motherboards will work if you plug the 20 pins into the top 20pins, leaving the bottom 4 pins empty. worked for me, on my old gigabyte motherboard. EDIT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812200064 may work. they are dubbed as 20 to 24 pin adapters but people on other forums etc say these don't work on some motherboards. EDIT again, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812183045 is even cheaper and made by a more well known brand.
  17. i would recommend at least a core 2 duo E4300 for BluRay playback. for a graphics card, most with hdcp compliancy will do. although most cards say hdcp compliant, only some have the actual chip onboard. most will work with a hdcp chip, but they aren't installed onto the card yet. the only ones i know of with the hdcp chip are the geforce 8400/8500/8600 series and the 8800GT (not sure about the 88GT though). i would buy a P35 chipset motherboard, but that's just me. if you have the money for a X38 motherboard, and will be playing games at high resolutions, then get the X38, but for a general use machine, including bluray playback, i'd get a P35 motherboard. you can't laugh at the P35 in gaming anyway.
  18. thanks for the info about d-sub and vga, guess that clears that up. if there are no other takers, in maybe a week or so i will be ordering the 2232BW. it doesn't have composite inputs, unless Cnet is more trustworthy than samsung's site, and though it would be a nice feature, i don't NEED it.
  19. @jcarle, ok i see my mistake, but the data on samsung site is confusing for an uneducated one (such as yours truly). accepting a signal, but with no physical ports to accomodate it? btw, i guess it would be possible to get a composite signal over the dvi or vga (preferably vga, no need to switch cables) port? wouldn't that mean all i need is a simple composite to dvi/vga adapter as there's no signal conversion needed? that's logical at least. the trouble with the HW-223DPB is that there's no professional reviews from it, and how it compares to other monitors. but it's **** cheap, so i'm not taking the risk. samsung's are overpriced in comparison but i want a good monitor. EDIT are they right, or did CNet make the same mistake i did? http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/samsu...7-32631891.html isn't it also funny that they include a VGA cable but there's no vga port... (according to cnet again)
  20. ebuyer says dvi and vga only but the samsung website ( http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/...&fullspec=F ) says my mistake, i remember, i couldn't find the kworld 1680ex, or the 1440 for that matter. unless google product search is useless. (if i find a good tuner/vga box i won't have need for native composite inputs)
  21. the hyundai looks good but 2 of the reviews don't, with that it seems you get your money's worth unfortunately the 22" gateway has no composite inputs, component doesn't look good on the PS2. also the price for the 24" looks ok, but a bit out of my budget and i don't want a new graphics card to get playable fps at that monitor's native resolution! and tesco's service for electronics have never been good for me, their returns is a nightmare (they're a supermarket who don't know a thing about electronical faults..) re-readiing the samsung website shows that http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130925 has composite inputs! and the price is cheaper than most, except the hyundai and the 226BW which is a gamble I'm not willing to take. for a £9 on 226BW vs 2232BW i'm almost guaranteed to get a good panel! i think that's the one i'll go for.. unless anyone else has other options? thanks. btw, punto, remember i asked you about a good composite method, and the best solution we came up with was native inputs on the monitor (I think). so vga boxes and tv tuner cards aren't in the question for my PS2.
  22. my 17" has it's fair amount of dead pixels, some clumped up into the top right corner, you can't see anything there now, and there are about 5 around the rest of the screen (i'm typing on it now and it hurts the eyes!) i'm looking for a good 22", preferably with composite inputs for my PS2. not needed but would be nice. preferred native resolution is 1650x1050; i don't want a new graphics card to get playable fps at a native resolution of 1920x1080 or something... http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronic...;searchsource=0 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130925 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/125099 are the ones i've been looking at. But i'd rather stay away from the last one in case i get a C panel... not my money's worth! it's less of a risk getting a lower grade panel on the SM2232BW, so i've read. budget is £200-£250. thanks for any suggestions!
  23. yes, i am using the latest BIOS for my p5b deluxe. enabling support for ACPI 2.0 in the bios doesn't help either. thanks.
  24. i say it wouldn't be enough, i would use at least a 400W psu with that, but if HP isn't one of the OEMs that make it impossible to easily remove the PSU then you can replace it easily enough but it will bite about another $90 (maybe?) out of your wallet. but it all depends on what devices you have. you need 2 pci-e x16 slots for xfire or sli but if you get a HD3870 or 8800GT you most likely won't be SLI-ng or xfiring. you can get pci-e x1 graphics cards, but no way can you get them manufactured by amd or nvidia afaik, so no xfire or sli with them
  25. sorry for bumping, but i've solved this by enabling S3 standby in the bios and it seems to be a much more efficient mode. another good thing is that it goes back to standby after waking for a lan task except when it should be going back to sleep, it turns up with a BSOD. i can't find the dump atm but it'll be easy enough to recreate the BSOD and copy the dump before anything has a chance to delete it, if necessary. thanks.
