Noob question about gpu, thermal paste and acetone
clidx replied to clidx's topic in Hardware Hangout
well i don't have to go through that since the paste is pre-applied on the s1 sorry if i wasn't clear but i was asking if it's safe to put acetone on the circuitry that's around the core. some people specifically state on other forums that when they use nail polish remover to take off thermal paste it's non acetone. i just want to know if putting acetone around the core is safe. basically the green bit in this pic thanks for the reply though -
I finally ordered a new gpu cooler since my stock cooler had rising temperatures everytime i turned my pc on (e.g. on ati tray tools 3d renderer sometimes temps would be 60 C and other times 80 C which i consider very hot for such a small 3d rendering task) i've used acetone to remove thermal paste from my cpu before, but on my cpu there's a big, silver metal cover blocking the way to the cpu chip itself and the paste was on the metal cover but on my gpu, there's no protection around the gpu chip, just a black mini-cover in the middle (where the paste goes) and green thing around it (pcb i think the term is?) anyway, is it safe to use the acetone on it or should i use something else like isopropyl? Thanks

the geforce 8600GT seems to beat the HD2600XT except in 3dmark06. but you could get a 8600GTS to outperform the HD2600XT but from reviews i've read (and if i'm not mistaken, advice by other members on the forum) the 8600 series is too weak to play most DX10 games well. i own a sapphire X1950Pro and i'm very happy with it... except in overclocking capability. if you want to overclock well do not get a X1950Pro. you could go for X1900XT but it does look far on the expensive side compared to X1950Pro. but i wouldn't get the x1950 xt, the x1950 pro has a better price-performance ratio according to reviews and if you CAN get it overclocked decently (which i'm not sure is altogether possible) the x1950 pro is a good option. just my 2p (or 2 cents )

I know many apps have that option in their config sections but if i get another app and it auto ejects the cd on default, and i've forgotten to generally configure the app (including disable cd auto-ejecting) then the cover on my case to the drive bays will come in the way to the opening drive. so i just wondered if there was a way to disable it completely for all apps rather than going into each apps options. (i know i don't have many apps that open the tray themselves but on the rare occasion that i get a new one and it DOES open it by itself, it is an annoyance) Thanks for the info anyway. i'll just have to try and remember to go into the options of every cd app i use.
-
Oh sorry about that. i was looking for a global setting and i just used nero as an example. any other suggestions?
-
Well you know some apps like nero automatically eject the disc tray when they finish burning or theres no disc in the drive etc, is there any way to disable this for all apps? it's just that my case has a cover that comes in the way when an app like nero ejects the disc tray... thanks.

you can burn them directly in nlite without creating a bootable iso. that's what i did when my old 40gb hdd failed and i used a temporary copy of xp on a 20gb hdd and i didn't have enough space left to create an iso. but yeah, just dragging and dropping it into nero or something won't work.
-
are you sure you burned the disc as a bootable cd? if not download nlite and burn it from there. if you DID burn it as a bootable cd, you could try modifying the settings in the bios to boot from the cd-rom first... but where the setting is is unique to the brand of bios (e.g. award, phoenix etc) if all fails, try reburning the disk.

ehhh 1 average credit away from beating gamehead200. c'mon my dear brand new Q6600 G0 you can do it!! anyway I just wanted to ask, is there some sort of portable version of BOINC? i know there probably isn't since it writes and reads a lot from a hdd but it would be good since i'm often in the computer rooms at my school... *ahem* doing homework... or would you not recommend it anyway even if there was one, since my usb stick would probably only live out half it's life?
-
since i got my new mobo and case, i can't use the safely remove hardware feature when i plug my stick into the front ports. the ports connect to the mobo via brackets and that's all i can think of that might not allow the stick to safely eject. or do i really need to safely eject, since write caching is off? and also my case has front audio i/o ports. after connecting the audio cable to the mobo, the front speaker port works but not the microphone port. what do i have to do to make it work? Thanks

like i said, i have to keep my pc off as much as possible, at least at night. now i just say i'm doing homework when in reality rosetta is crunching away and i'm doing something else. nice to see this got a sticky and the coppermine's cpu died... i've had 2 cpus dying on me in a 30 day period (my old P4 anyone...). i bought a new celeron 468 (still 800mhz, it was really cheap though) but ubuntu won't boot... and the only task rosetta got close to completing on it has to go since i reformatted my hdd i'm not gonna run rosetta on it since it takes about a day for it do complete it. 1 task. 1 day...

@bonestonne i'll keep that model in mind in case i need a higher cfm exhaust fan and like i said, i don't care about noise. one of the things that simply does not bother me (maybe because i have my headphones on when i'm on my pc) i'm about to go do some more overclocking... i'll post back on what i can get. i'm not sure what voltage i'm on, it's 1.28***. and in my p5b deluxe theres only one option that's 1.28***. it's a pretty cool day today in england (or at least in london, in the room in my house that my pc's in) and at 75% load with the freezer's fan on default speed my load temps are about 42 C with 75% load!! (which is pretty good for what i've seen of the freezer so far!!) EDIT ok i'll post a list of stable overclocks 320x9 1.2875V (not stable when i lower the vcore any further ) 325x9 1.3125V (not stable at anything below it grrrrr) edit: scratch 325x9@1.3125V it crashed after about 10 mins with 75% load i think i need a bit of help... and with cores 2, 3 and 4 at 100% and 1 at about 10% my temps are 46, 45, 39 and 42 (320x9@1.2875V) i haven't tried going past 1.4V and i don't think i really want to.
-
i've hit a barrier at 2835mhz @315x9... upping the vcore doesn't help (i think i'm on 1.28-something). i've locked the pci bus to 33.3 and pci-e bus to 100mhz etc etc but it wouldn't even boot up at 325x9... i had to restart it several times until the mobo detected a failed cmos checksum and resetted the settings. orthos on all 4 cores ran ok for 4 hours before i quit it at 315x9 and you really are lucky that you could raise the fsb so much and keep the vcore low... but if it idles at 30 C and 1.425V then it can't be that bad keeping at that vcore can it? i'm new to overclocking. anyway, any tips? i'll twiddle about a bit and see what i can do... or could it be my psu that can't hold everything? (i don't want to get another one already! but i do need one for an old pc that i'm going to be putting my old mobo in) EDIT stable at 320x9 i just reversed the case fan at the back of my case that was acting as intake and my cpu temps dropped about 3 C... makes me wonder what'll happen when i get the silverstone...
-
i've ordered an expansion slot exhaust fan that sucks air outta the case at about 40cfm (only £3!) , the fan that came with the case and my psu fan. the ~115cfm fan is arriving later in the week. should i use the 70mm fan as exhaust or intake? it attaches to the case cover but i think that having a fan on the side is kind of inconvenient since a good setup is a high cfm intake fan at the front, psu and normal exhaust fan at the back since i think it gives good airflow. but then you've got this little thing on the side blowing air in and disrupting the air flow. or does it actually help airflow? and the freezer 7 pro comes with a (I think) 80 or 92mm fan (don't know which). the fan on the freezer blows towards the back. Btw ripken, how much have you oc'd your q6600? i've only got mine to to 2.8ghz so far (315x9) and temps are barely above default clock temps
-
one more thing, is my psu fan enough for exhaust? i'll have 1x70mm side case fan and 2x120mm fans when the silverstone arrives (though 1 of the 120mm fans is the stock fan that came with my case and sucks) all i know about my psu fan it that it's 120mm and sucking air out out of my case, not blowing it in.
-
i love the cfm rating on that. it seems that that fan is the most hyped about on the net i just ordered it (though by scan.co.uk rather than newegg since i live in the uk) and it'll come by wednesday i can't wait to see how it'll perform. Thanks EDIT i forgot to ask, anyone have recommendations for a passive gpu cooler? i know i posted a thread about accelero s1 vs x2 for a sapphire x1950 pro but now i'm looking at other manufacturers etc etc. Obv it has to be compatible with a x1950 pro. and i can't find a cheap accelero s1...
-
Im looking for a 120mm case fan since the ones that came with my case barely pump any air. and they have a very low rpm (although that's not necessarily a bad thing, i can stick my little finger in there and not feel a thing. that can't be good). i really don't mind if it has LEDs or not and i completely don't care about noise level but i'm looking for something that pumps as much air as possible any thoughts? i'm looking at the thermaltake A2449 but i'd like to get something with higher airflow (btw i'll be buying 2 case fans since both the 120mm fans that came with my case are the same and they suck)
-
Ahhh thanks for clearing that up i get it now.
-
no i have to appease my parents because they really don't like my pc on, much less on all day. i'll set up R@H on it later. i wonder how well it'll perform... EDIT the coppermine performs like crap, the c2q can get through 17 tasks in the time the coppermine takes for 1. running on ubuntu feisty. i shouldn't have expected too much from such a low end, old cpu.
-
i added my Q6600 to the msfn.org team and my primary pc+BOINC is on for about 6hrs a day on a weekday and more on weekends i'm thinking of adding my old Celeron 800mhz pc thats running as a file and printer server on my mini home network (running on ubuntu). do you think it would be worth running r@h on it or would it be a waste of time since it's too... what's the word... rubbish? and it's also juggling file and printer sharing. and 1600 credits/day!!!! whoa zxian!! but then again if i left my Q6600 on all day i might be able to get that... but i have to appease my parents *shrugs*
-
c'mon somebody must have some ideas? EDIT nvm, given up ubuntu on this pc because of the gfx problems... now trying it on my ultra old celeron coppermine
-
if you have a hyper threading cpu and you set a program that is using 51%+ of the cpu and limit it's affinity to just cpu 0 (or just cpu 1) in taskmgr then does it only use half of the cpu? ht cpus are only 1 core so i'm just wondering
-
i was running 2 rosetta@home tasks, limited to affinity on cores 3 and 4. those temps would be my idle temps if i were running on the intel stock cooler. and just out of interest ripken, which water cooler do you have and is it worth the money? (no i'm not planning on getting water cooling yet, just wondering) EDIT ok didn't read properly, i guess your thermochill pa 120.3 is your watercooler thanks for the info Zxian and ripken!!
-
well i didn't know where to post this, so i figured since it has to do with my cpu, hardware hangout anyway, which temperature reading is the correct one?
-
well my memory tab is saying the advertised speed. but the spd tab (see screen) is saying pc2-5300 so which one is more reliable? there's also a label on the ram that says pc2-6400 and ddr2-800 or are there any RAM benchmarks that i could use to see whether my ram is running at 800mhz? EDIT answered my own question, since the frequency in the memory tab changes a fair bit, cpu-z's probably checking in real time what speed the ram is running it, so it is 400mhz and the spd is showing the wrong speed. thanks
