unfortunately, eclipse computers don't have good reviews so i think i'll pass on the avertv 203 i can't find it anywhere else in the uk either shame, it would have been a good card, especially for the price hauppage's wintv radio looks good but i can't find it anywhere... and none of the pinnacle ones seem to have composite and s-video inputs.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/82616 looks good but it doesn't have any info on input plugs and it's not listed on kworld's website :S the reviews also say it's not vista compatible http://www.ebuyer.com/product/54154 has good reviews and has the inputs i need. but it doesn't have vista x64 drivers of course, this is no big problem since i'm dual booting with my previous xp 32bit install but it would be nice to have a product like that that has vista x64 drivers. the price is excellent on that thing so i am inclined to get it. but are there any other suggestions? the kworld products on scan and ebuyer seemed pretty limited..

Yes, lol, my front panel is hd audio. the front panel works in xp anyway. just not vista.

Thanks for the info. 1 question, is it a reliable product? i'm just making sure. and also i can't find the pal version for sale, let alone for sale anywhere online in the uk. have you got any links? any other suggestions? like i said, i'd rather it was a pci/pci-e x1 tuner that accepts these inputs rather than anything else, but a good vga box will be fine.
-
^ thanks for the response. the soundmax drivers didn't come with any other application other than the drivers. the xp version did come with a soundmax control panel but not vista x64, possible vista in general.

I want to hook up composite av and s-video devices to my monitor and since it only has a vga input, i thought the easiest way would be to get a tv tuner that has these inputs. All i want is simple tv functionality with inputs for s-video and composite av (WITH the red and white audio plugs). it can plug into a pci or pci-e x1 slot. I'd rather not go with a usb one since my desk is cluttered enough as it is... I'm looking to spend £15 to £30 and from any good site that ships to the uk... thanks for any suggestions. Btw, it has to have drivers/be compatible with vista x64.

Well i thought about where to post it, but i thought the vista section would be best since with both drivers (generic and soundmax) the headphones aren't detected when i plug them into the front jacks. It could go in both sections... maybe a moderator can help me out here?

Well i recently got x64 vista. I'm having problems with the front audio panel, the headphones aren't being recognised. this problem is on both the soundmax drivers and vista's own drivers, the ones that get installed by default for sound. nothing is detected on the front panel. it worked fine in xp, and still does (dual boot) but not in vista installing the soundmax drivers simply doesn't work, no playback or recording device is detected in the sound options after installing and rebooting. when i delete the device from device manager and scan for devices, the default drivers are installed and the headphones work in the back ports but still not the front i read somewhere on google that vista only supports hd audio, not ac97, but in the bios the setting is on hd audio and not ac97. any suggestions? thanks.

I'm using wmp11 with the k-lite codec pack and have never had any problems. i especially like wmp's toolbar mode. it looks more streamlined into my theme than itunes' and all the necessary features for music are right there. but for dvds I use powerdvd 6... it came with my burner so i may as well... and wmp can't compare to powerdvd when it comes to dvds imo.

I'm waiting for starcraft 2 as well, i still play the original starcraft! it's still one of the best games I have! Fingers crossed it'll come out soon... too bad 'soon' means at earliest 2008...

Is shell hardware detection enabled in services.msc? i think that service is needed for autorun.. at least for me anyway, when i disabled it, portableapps wouldn't automatically start on my usb stick.

Ok, thanks for the info zxian

so if i also buy a hi gain antenna and point it away from the head phone receiver, and change the channel on my router if there's interference, it should be fine? the receiver and transmitter will be at a 90 degree angle to the hi gain antenna on the router and they'll be about 1m apart. and thanks for the info about the RC cars, hard to believe that manufacturers would know about interference and still only market cars with a small frequency band.

I have a 2.4ghz wireless router for another pc, which is almost always in use. if i buy 2.4ghz wireless headphones, 2.4ghz mouse etc will there be any problems? i remember back in the days of the remote controlled cars that having the same frequency cars on at the same time would cause interference, if you chose to go right on 1 remote, the car you're trying to move right, might not move right but any other car (in range of the remote) of the same frequency might... i've found mixed experiences with wireless devices of the same frequency on google.. Thanks.

everyone's voted ME and i have to agree, it was so buggy. i simply moved back to 98 SE after that. (This was ages ago)

yes, slipstreaming it with nlite would work.

thanks for the info punto. the 48 bit lba site says for ata drives only, but then i remembered that site was probably made before people started using sata :S
-
are you using at least sp1? i think 48bit lba for disks larger than 120gb was only included in sp1 or something like that. you can just fix it by installing sp1. otherwise you might need to upgrade your bios i think. (or does 48 bit lba only apply to ide drives?)

I mainly use windows pic and fax viewer but i've recently started using xnview so i voted for both of them

Noob question about gpu, thermal paste and acetone
clidx replied to clidx's topic in Hardware Hangout
I waited about 10 mins after wiping off all the 'goo' and all is fine. what i hated about the install of the cooler is the vr heat spreader and the ram sinks. the heat spreader wouldn't fit my card properly and the ram sinks wouldn't stick. i had to take the old ram things (they're not heat sinks but rather a thicker version of thermal paste maybe?) from the stock cooler, stick them on the ram and put the ramsinks on top of them. but temps dropped about 30 C idle and 42 C load, and i could push the card to 641mhz core/1512mhz memory gaming is also much smoother with the new overclock specs as well thanks for the help! -

@ripken thanks for the advice about the purity level. what would happen if you used something really impure like 50% or something (out of interest, I bought 95% from my chemist ) -

Noob question about gpu, thermal paste and acetone

would brandy work instead of isopropyl? or is it not pure enough? it's just when i asked my parents if they had any isopropyl or rubbing alcohol, they didn't know what they were... -
Noob question about gpu, thermal paste and acetone
clidx replied to clidx's topic in Hardware Hangout
i need to use maybe a drop because the thermal paste application by sapphire was frankly amateur (I'm not saying i could do better) and goop was seeping off into the pcb around the core. looks like i have to look for something else Thanks for all your help! -
Noob question about gpu, thermal paste and acetone
clidx replied to clidx's topic in Hardware Hangout
if i use as little as possible, will it be ok? i'll be using the swab to take off most of the paste and the acetone just to take off some dried up... goo anyway, thanks for the info about the isopropyl, i'll get some of that if acetone isn't safe to use on the green circuit.
