  1. i'm looking for a soldering iron and http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-71421-SOLDE...N/dp/B00023TA2Y has good reviews and nice price. but none of them say whether it's esd-safe or not, i'm guessing not. if i buy a non esd-safe iron when how would i go about grounding (earthing, or whatever) the tip (or whatever people with non esd-safe irons do on electronics)? Thanks.
  2. yes the motherboard supports DDR2-800, it has a ram compatibility list in the manual and it has some ddr2-800 ram listed. umm what is dual channel mode? i only have one stick of ram if that has anything to do with it. and i don't know if dual channel mode is needed to reach ddr2-800.
  3. i could only find it on one shop via google products and it was going for a whopping £78!!!! for £3 less i got the p5b deluxe! it was made in 2004, by now i'd say it's a budget board. http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=ga-8i91...sa=N&tab=wf Oh yeah and i'm selling it with the 2x512mb ddr ram. both work. EDIT i ordered a new case, not a cheapo beige one like mine was. it came with 1x120mm fan and 2x80mm fans and after i taped my psu cables (they're so bulky AND stiff) to the side i got about 35 C and that was with the fans off! my floppy disk ide cable is everywhere, can you get some sort of ide to sata adapter for floppies? or the rounded ide cables, are they easy to bend etc? because i folded my floppy ide cable 3 times (not incl the plugs of course) and taped it but as you can guess it wasn't very flexible and I couldn't get it to reach the port on the mobo. (and YES i do still use floppy disks. no shame.)
  4. but so it's kind of confusing me.
  5. i have a p5b deluxe and kingston 2gb ram. it's pc2-6400 but cpu-z lists it as pc2-5300. i've tried upping the voltage to the ram to 2V and manually selecting DDR2-800 in the bios but no change any suggestions? thanks. EDIT it seems that the clock speed reads 400mhz but cpu-z claims that the max bandwidth is 333mhz... so i guess it IS running at DDR2-800mhz but it's listed as DDR2-667 RAM. any way to change this?
  6. hmmm i got about 50 C with the intel stock cooler, default clocked... so at least it's a 10 C improvement. and remember i don't have any case fans except a tiny asus fan that came with the mobo. i need a new chassis... anyway any ideas on what i should sell the old mobo for?
  7. thanks for the advice, i've now snagged a free freezer 7 pro! and by overclock a "lot" is a Q6600 to 3ghz reasonable? what would be a limit to the freezer 7 pro and overclock? just a note, cores 1 and 2 run at about 37 C idle and 3 and 4 run at 35 C max (probably as cores 3 and 4 aren't really used much - yet). so what would be my limit? any advice on what i should sell my GA-8I915G-MF + 2x512mb ddr RAM for?
  8. I've been asking around and one of my friends let me have an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro for free!!! apparently he got a new cooler cos he pumped about another 1.5ghz into his cpu through overclocking and the freezer 7 pro wasn't keeping up so he got a pretty cheap water cooler i like the freezer 7 pro, it's temps are good, better than the stock cooler, not as good as some passive coolers like the ultra 120 or scythe ninja but i'm not complaining, i got it for free!! i'm not planning on hardcore overclocking, i just do it for fun. but i'm kind of impatient. maybe i'll beat my (now dead) P4's 3ghz? i dont' know. thanks for all your help anyway! Umm lets see, to upgrade my pc it cost me... £400... better than buying a prebuilt pc! next stop, a hdd to replace my maxtor. remind me never to buy a maxtor. though a new hdd WILL have to wait. One last thing, i'm planning on selling my GA-8I915G-MF which comes with 2x512mb ddr ram, all 3 components are fully working and both are about 2-3 years old. how much do you think i should sell it for? i'm thinking £40 but i'm not sure as i got the motherboard for £40 (I think) or should i put it upt to £50 due to the ram?
  9. I think i'm going to be bankrupt... Any case suggestions or active coolers/smaller passive coolers? a small fan that goes right next to the cpu was included in my mobo so if there was a passive cooler there it'd be sort of cooled but it is such a small fan. but on the other hand it is really close to the cpu. and also the stock cooler fell out of the motherboard and i rushed to turn the pc off (ahem pulled the plug). i don't understand, i pushed the 4 pins in til they clicked and turned them all anticlockwise until they wouldn't go, it was securely in and it wouldn't wiggle about. so now a cooler is even more urgent for me... but there isn't any space around my current case so i won't be able to get a bigger case so i'll need to stick with an active cooler or small passive cooler
  10. I like the temps on the ThermalRight Ultra120 Extreme and it will fit the mobo seeing as you're using it. the prices are also decent as well, for Q6600 at 48 C load max (are you OC'ing?) but the problem is the case fan. my 1/2 foot ruler claims that the distance between the screws for the case fan is 70mm. i now know that 70mm fans DO exist. do i need one of them or will a 120mm fan work (there is enough space around the screws to hold a 120mm fan, if there was any way to attach the fan to the screws that are 70mm apart, not 120mm) it's just that i have seen a lack of support in the 70mm fan area (*ahem* only the evercool fan). or would anyone recommend a 120mm to 70mm adapter?
  11. Ok i've got a Q6600, P5b Deluxe (i found it unopened, unwanted, on ebay for £70 excl shipping so I say bargain!) and kingston hyperx 2gb ddr2 ram it wasn't easy installing in the way that the quad wouldn't work in the p5b deluxe so in the end i slapped my P4 on (it worked! but it was as slow as a snail) and looked on asus' website and there was a bios update for q-core and it worked after that but i have to say one thing, the stock cooler is horrible. i tried oc'ing a bit and got it up to 2. -something over 5- ghz and temps were going into mid to high 40s. and that's when it's idle. but I can't expect much from the stock cooler. so i've been looking at other coolers. i don't want to spend more than £30 and seeing as i have no case fans, i'll need an active cooler or passive + a case fan (the p5b deluxe came with a really small fan though). i've been looking at the zalman CNPS9500 AT and i like the prices but i've just got a new mobo, cpu and stick of RAM! if i could i would go for something that costs about £5 but i estimate for that price you'll get the quality of the stock fan so there's no point. and i don't like a led crammed in. sure it looks good but that's it (unless it has some superior purpose?) so could anyone recommend me the CNPS9500 AT or other cooler? (no i did not slap on as much thermal paste as i could. there's probably only 1 or 2 mm of paste.) thanks for all your help! EDIT i may need a case fan if i get a passive cooler. i measured the distance between the screws and they were almost exactly 7cm!! i've never seen 70mm fans before! what should i do about that?
  12. RAM... i completely forgot about that... i suppose i'll have to get ddr2 ram. at least my current ram was the cheapest i could find. open to suggestions about ram now (don't need cpu suggestions anymore. not that i really needed it in the first place seeing as a Q6600 is my best choice anyway atm) and i'm looking at price options, http://www.kikatek.com/product_info.php?products_id=18796 looks ok at £87, but it SHOULD turn up cheaper on other sites as i've seen the p5b deluxe for that price! more price options would be nice as well, thanks nmX.Memnoch
  13. after 3 years of hard work, my pentium 4 3ghz HT died. RIP cpu, you have served me faithfully (is there an emoticon for crying? just kidding) anyway obviously I now need a new cpu. I have a GA-8I915G-MF mobo (just look at this, it's pitiful, no core or core 2, scratch that, nothing over P4 Extreme is supported! -note the N/A by the core 2 series!) therefore core 2 is out of the question And also if i don't get a core 2 then i'll have to go with a P4 Extreme which is a waste considering my cpu has died so now's a golden opportunity to get something that can run rainbow six vegas at more than 20fps average. So t/f i could get a new motherboard. and take a big bite out of the bank account (not even my money, it's my parents ) cpu wise, I like what i see in the Q6600/Q6700 (quad, not extreme) but do i really need a quad core? i game quite a bit, when i can, i do the occasional video encoding (note the word occasional)(often pretty large files). i think i should get a dual core at least, probably when the d/c dies (if i get one) many common apps will be multithreaded but if i get a quad then it might die by the time most apps are multithreaded but i think i should get a quad rather than dual because of small price difference, my ideal core 2 duo and the more affordable q6600 (i would post the q6700 results but the prices in the uk are almost double the q6600 for ~200mhz more -I think) but if i get a new cpu i will have to upgrade my mobo, so i'm open to suggestions on that as well. i'm looking for something with at least 1 pci-e x16, 1 pci-e x1 (yes i have a pci-e x1 device ) and 3 pci ports. and with an 24-pin atx input from the psu. i don't need anything onboard like graphics, lan etc. i need at least 5 usb ports. quite a few sata/300 ports as well (i know you won't get many drives that use the whole bandwidth but i want to keep the motherboard alive in the long run; latest features without wanting a new board every so often) and minimum 1 ide port I'm open to all suggestions, thanks
  14. Ok thanks for the advice... i'll see what i can squeeze out of seagate.
  15. i bought a maxtor 6Y200P0 (200gb, Maxtor Diamondmax9) and recently it died. i bought it from ultratec.co.uk and it was refurbished, it's only been a couple of days past the 90 day warranty period so no rma'ing. sometimes windows can briefly access the data on it but then the partition just disappears and mouse movements etc in windows become jerky, I guess because ide doesn't support hot-plugging... if it's firmware corruption, then is there a LEGAL way to get the firmware YAR41BWO? (bios detects it as Maxtor CALYPSO. either that or my pc doesn't boot. sometimes it detects it as Maxtor 6Y200P0) if not, what are my other options? i don't need data recovery, nothing in it is important as i haven't had it for long enough but what are my options? EDIT Seagate's warranty expired in march... well i couldn't expect much for a refurbished drive.
  16. try a different usb port or different pc to see if it's a problem with the stick
  17. I recently installed ubuntu 6.1 (7.04 wouldn't boot so i couldn't install, how can you set irqpoll on a live cd?) and fglrx 8.34.8 which is the version supposed to have support for the x1950 cards as well. i did the preinstallation checks here http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Ed...allation_Checks and picked the "ubuntu" method http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Ed..._the_Ubuntu_Way . then i did all the post installation checks. rebooted, went into the ubuntu boot screen and all i could see was the boot screen background with a noisy, blue line running across the screen. it wouldn't boot. i went into windows, installed the ext2 ifs driver and restored xorg.conf from the file xorg.conf.original-1 or whatever it was called (sudo aticonfig --initial made a backup of xorg.conf). rebooted into ubuntu and it booted fine, but anything 3D was seriously skewed up, e.g. the map where you select your time zone. fglrxinfo couldn't detect my video driver. so i tried method 2. (i did do the step that you only have to do if you tried method one, the "ubuntu" way). it made a new kernel (2.6.12-386) and when i tried to boot into any kernel after, my monitor said "input not supported" and i've only ever seen that when i try to use a resolution that my monitor doesn't support (anything over 1280x1024) restoring the xorg.conf again helped me boot back in but fglrx wouldn't detect my card and said something like $ fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.1) the troubleshooting page http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Troubleshooting didn't help. what should i do? i'm don't want to take out my card every time i want to switch between windows and ubuntu to use the onboard graphics... EDIT nobody??
  18. i tried all sorts of partition tools, even the ones you boot into them from a cd/floppy, SPARE just wouldn't shrink. anyway, i've repartitioned the disk now so nvm, thanks
  19. it won't shrink, the options for them are greyed out. it's as if my disk is locked down or something. Anyway i'm backing up my files etc and i'm going to repartition my entire disk. thanks anyway. (back to the drawing board for me)
  20. down the reformat route for me but this time not just of xp or vista but the whole disk... spare is a really old partition. i made it so i could put downloads, music etc etc in there and it could be shared by the 2 OSs and i'd never have to delete it. and since it's creation, XP has been deleted and reformatted a million times and vista maybe twice.
  21. i need to get this straight so i'll just do a print screen of diskmgmt in xp I want to move the system and active attributes from spare (e:\) to vista (d:\) because i want to do a format of spare (e:\) and e:\ is the only one to have an option to make it active but as it's already active it's greyed out EDIT I see why you got confused in post 1 i posted about how the drives were mapped in vista my mistake
  22. i don't know what you guys are complaining about, having a cpu that scores over 5, my aging P4 can play most games out there and it gets 4.1 RAM 4.5 HDD 5.5 GPU (Aero) 5.8 GPU (business/3d) 5.8 and of course, my aging cpu, 4.1 (sorry for double post but i had to say something after korn2007)
  23. i only have 1 physical hdd. (as they are mapped in xp) C:\ is where xp is installed, D:\ is where vista is installed and E:\ is a spare partition and the option is simply not available on any partition other than E:\ (E:\ is active). not greyed out, but in the context menu it's just not there.
  24. nvm guys, in safe mode it didn't shut down every 1 hour so i had time to do a virus scan, avast picked up a virus, w32. something. thanks for trying to help anyway!
  25. does a couple of sub-builds really matter to you to redownload IE ? anyway, 7.00.6000.16512 is for vista only I guess.
