  1. I have a 50gb partition on my hdd that i want to delete to install ubuntu. trouble is, i'm running dual boot with xp and vista and the drive (mapped e:\ in xp) is xp's system partition so how do i delete, or at least shrink e:\? it's a primary, active and system partition. i'm willing to format xp to make this work (don't have much to lose) but is there any guarantee which partition(s) will be system, active and boot? any way to make sure set the one you want it to be? and in vista at least, the "mark partition as active" is greyed out in disk management; that option only appears on the system partition anyway (mapped d:\ on vista). thanks.
  2. No it's not an overheating issue as when i start up vista again it takes ~ the same amount of time to unexpectedly shut down. and i have no case fan unless you mean the cpu or gpu fan. i'll disable automatic rebooting later and copy down the bsod error, i'm on xp now
  3. i did update the bios to the latest version (GA-8i915G-MF v. F8) as my new graphics card wouldn't work, and after the update it did and i did check the event viewer under system (my previous post) and there wasn't anything out of the ordinary. a bunch of errors but that was due to windows shutting down while windows update was installing some updates. and if it's overheating it's due to vista, or possible vista heating up my pc due to stress; I'm running xp as dual boot, and this problem doesn't happen in xp.
  4. the only thing in event viewer to do with it is "The previous system shutdown at 12:26:03 on 31/07/2007 was unexpected." which was just after I cold booted vista. No errors after it, a couple of warnings, the rest, completely information. but on the most recent unexpected blackout, there were a bunch of errors about kb******, and according to the time, it seems that it's cos vista blacked out while WU was installing updates. the kb****** errors are unique to this shutdown. and by mini-dumps, what do you mean? EDIT after googling a bit, i see what you mean, there's no c:\windows\minidump. a search in the start menu shows there is but i think that's just indexing service not updating it's file index, minidump probably got deleted and indexing still has it
  5. since I bought a sapphire x1950 pro pci-e, in vista, the pc shuts down about every 1 hour i've installed KB938194 which is supposed to resolve an issue with gpus shutting down but no avail. anyone have any suggestions?
  6. well i need the cooler because the fan is sorta faulty anyway i'll check if the x2 will fit in my pc, it looks huge and the psu came with so many thick cables... any other suggestions?
  7. thanks for the link, i'll keep myself updated on that topic
  8. well the sapphire x1950 pro doesn't overclock well the fan also doesn't seem to cool the card too well, temps hit 70 C idle (even after changing the speeds in ati tray tools and rivatuner) so i've been wondering, is it worth it getting a new cooler? i figure it will help overclocking and fix the temperature problem? the coolers i've been looking at are the arctic accelero s1 and x2 (well x2 + voltage regulator heat spreader module which is required for the x1950 pro) so the price of the s1 comes to about £11.33, inc vat, exc delivery and x2, £12.57, inc vat, exc delivery (both from ebuyer.com) and $1 exc delivery for the vr heat spreader module (only needed for x2) so my question is, does the x2 outperform the s1? it's just that i couldn't find any temperature graphs that show idle temp and temp with heavy load for the s1 or would anyone recommend other gpu coolers that cool well but don't have a heavy price tag? i need to save up after getting a new psu and graphics card. preferably under £15. thanks btw i do have a spare slot under the gfx card if a cooler needs to take it
  9. i got a 1 when i had my intel 915G graphics, but since my x1950 pro it's been 4.1, with my cpu as 4.1
  10. in my experience dcom off, stops windows installer service from starting when it is stopped, when you run a msi file or a setup that launches a msi and the svc isn't started. it also made the ikernel.exe error come up, but the situation is different for you, dcom won't work but installshield setups will. for me, 'til i enabled dcom, it was dcom off, no installshield.
  11. bittorrent rocks!!!! well for me, more specifically utorrent or when i'm on linux (dual boot) azureus enough said.
  12. lol thanks for that . I'd probably at least be better than the guy who built my pc (15A on the (only 1) 12V rail anyone? or how about onboard graphics are faster than pci-express x16 cards?)i like my new "toys" very much thanks, my psu doesn't roar as soon as i turn it on and the gfx card runs aero not actually surprising for this card but when you've run on crappy onboard graphics that can't go aero you really notice the difference when you can. and let's not go into the games i've got for birthdays etc for my pc that couldn't run before because of the old integrated graphics... EDIT just tried it, the x1950 pro doesn't like oc'ing too much, crashed after 3 mins in half life 2. it the requested specs in ati tray were only about 10mhz higher on default core frequency and ram oh well i'm happy with normal tweaks like aa, af etc for now
  13. ok my m/b doesn't seem to be detecting the sapphire, the onboard card is still on and windows doesn't detect a new device. the gpu fan is spinning (kinda loud, hard to miss ) and the extra 6-pin power connector is plugged in (direct from psu, not 4 pin molex adapter). what should I do? or do you think it's a problem with the card? EDIT nvm solved it by upgrading the bios
  14. open services.msc and enable + start dcom server process launcher if that doesn't work then i can't help you
  15. i'll stick to the pro, i just got the pro how do i disable the onboard video? i have an onboard intel 82915g on a gigabyte ga-8i915g-mf motherboard i went in the bios (award modular bios) and there was disable onboard EVERYTHING from lan to the firewire port to the sound etc but nothing to do with graphics, vga, shared memory or anything like that? there's also no jumper or anything on my motherboard NVM after ransacking the net (the gigabyte website was useless...) i found that my mobo automatically detects a new vga card thanks guys!!
  16. jcarle you are a genius. i thought that wouldn't work to convince my parents but it did!! props to you for that, and to puntomx for the seasonic and everyone else who tried to help
  17. i can only see the last one, apparently tomshardware errors out on direct links to images (?) but i don't want my pc looking like the last image... one more thing, is £15 more worth it for the xt version of sapphire x1950 rather than the pro?
  18. well i have about 5 usb devices that don't have an external supply source, 1 pci-e x16 gfx card (not yet but i will be), 1 monitor, 1 pci-e x1 tv card, 1 dc prescott intel p4 3ghz cpu, 1 dvd-rom, 1 dvd+/-rw, 1 floppy drive and that's about it i'll look into the links you guys gave me, thanks EDIT puntomx, that looks like a good priced psu, now i need to persuade my parents to get me one, i'm only 16. first can i ask, what is the difference between my crap psu only having 1 12V spec (15A) but the sea sonic having 12V1 and 12V2? does it mean that it has 2 12V thingys so it basically has a total of 29A for 12V? sorry, it's just i don't get that part
  19. thanks for the info guys, i may get some velcro, but i'll be sure to stay away from magnets hmmm nice background info zxian
  20. following jcarle's advice on getting a new power supply, which psu should i get? this is probably my worst area of computing as i've never touched the power supply in my life, it was installed by a "professional" (who obviously went for price rather than reliability) as jcarle recommended, the corsair hx 520W looks good but a bit out of my price range (i'm hoping to get a graphics card as well) any other fairly cheap, but reliable than my one that may explode at any second? thanks
  21. arghhh i had it built by a supposed "expert" i'll look into changing it for the time being, will the sapphire run without any increased risk of exploding? EDIT scratch that, i'm not getting a gfx card just to have it blown up by the psu, i'll get the psu first
  22. i fairly recently got windows vista home premium it's been working fine for a month but now, about every half hour it keeps restarting. it goes straight to the bios, none of the "windows is shutting down..." stuff. then it says DISK BOOT ERROR, PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER pressing enter does nothing then i have to cold boot the pc for it to work i'm also running windows xp in dual boot, it has never had this problem, and isn't at the moment even though vista does having to cold boot sort of makes me think it might be a hardware/driver error, so just in case, i have a logitech quickcam messenger, netgear wpn311 adapter, realtek RTL8169/8110 ethernet and intel 92815g graphics on a gigabyte ga-8i915g-mf motherboard and working drivers, reinstalling drivers made no difference
  23. basically, i'm making a webcam holder out of a magnet, i.e. i stick the magnet to the back of my webcan and i put the magnet near the top of my lcd screen, it does attract what i want to know is if there are any side effects of doing this? thanks
  24. regarding my psu i don't know if this refers to manufacturer/model but i think it's firepower pl-350 just in case, here's a part of the table under "dc output" i found stuck to my psu PL-350 +5V 40A +3.3V 20A MAX 200W +12V 15A -12V 0.8A -5V 0.5A +5Vsb 3A MAX POWER: 350W hope i picked the right stuff to copy...
  25. thanks puntomx, i'll get the x1950 pro, but first i'll look around if it's any cheaper and that's pc world, overpricing EVERYTHING... it was only about a month ago that i saw that price as well. EDIT does it matter which brand it is, e.g. the ebay link is a sapphire radeon card but i found another, cheaper card using the x1950 chipset that's made by powercolour (or powercolor ) EDIT2 powercolor radeon x1950 pro extreme seems to have v. good reviews, i might get that? recommendations? thanks ( http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+...productId=25335 ) EDIT3 http://www.kikatek.com/product_info.php?products_id=22349
