  1. HI, Dave! OK, but first do create a *full* backup of your 98SE partition, plus a mini-backup containing just MSDOS.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, CONTROL.INI, SYSTEM.INI,USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT. You're right, NUSB is only interested in mass storage devices, so those devices you mentioned can be safely let remain in the system. But, then again, NUSB 3.3 installs a generic USB 2.0 stack, so that you ought to remove any Enhanced Host Controller present before installing. Please post a screenshot of your device manager with the USB controllers hive expanded, so I can advise you whether there is anything more to be removed before going on and installing NUSB 3.3, OK?
  2. Hay que seguirse las reglas: y una de ellas es que en estes foruns solo se puede postar en ingles...
  3. The sound is back! Way to go, Dave! Did you compare the folder contents? What did you find out? And, BTW, there is one more key that might be transplanted from the bad to the good system ini. It's: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\InstalledFiles Of course, you might export them from both system.dats as reg files and compare them first, before merging anything, and just add the missing entries, if any. And make a backup of the working, good system.dat, just in case, before merging anything. And yes, as soon as you've established your system really is working as it should, then back we go, on to getting the card reader working!
  4. Congratulations! Yes, please. But be sure to post them in Compatible Hardware with Windows 9x, for easy reference.

    Hi

    Welcome to MSFN, ale2004!
  6. If you have access to a XP or 2k or Vista or Win 7 machine, please get ChipGenius (it's standalone, no install needed, just create a folder and drop the .rar contents there, then run it from there) and post its results on your iPOD. I'm interested specifically on the VID and PID values. BTW, meanwhile, read also this thread, over on techguy, and this other thread, over on ilounge.

    HI

    Welcome onboard, irfan!
  8. Plug it in. The worst that can happen is it not getting recognised. But I bet it'll work just fine. Let's see.
  9. Sure. But now we've got a working installation to play with, so let's go ahead and do it. During the next several steps, let's keep the frankenstein SYSTEM.DAT in the old installation. This procedure is to be performed entirely from 2k: Rename C:\WIN-98\SYSTEM32 from your old installation to C:\WIN-98\SYSTEM33 Copy over from the new, working, installation C:\WIN-98\SYSTEM32. (remember it contains C:\WIN-98\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS, so this will bring over a full new set of WDM drivers). Now reboot into Win 98, test it and report the results. In case it works, now we proceed to compare SYSTEM32 with SYSTEM33 and find out the file(s) that are messing things up.
  10. Hi, Dave! Let's go slow... Her's a new experiment: Go into regedit, in your old 98 installation and export HKLM\Software to a reg file. Then go to true DOS and substitute just system.dat by the one you created in the new installation. Try to go back to 98 now. If the system manages to do it, merge the reg file you just created to it. Then reboot and test how things went. BTW, if you just unpack NUSB3.3 to a subdirectory with, say, 7-zip, you'll then have a copy of all the files in NUSB. So you can make sure you've removed all files it installs, by comparison. But I highly doubt you sound problem stems from NUSB (note that I've been wrong, in my life, so many times that I cannot actually count them, but that's my gut feeling, anyway).
  11. Hi, duffy98! Here's how to. It's quite easy: (i) higlight the code provided by CharlesF and copy it to notepad (ii) add one (or, even better two) blank line(s) at the end (iii) save it with any name (I used CFregIE698.txt) (iv) rename it from .txt to .reg, and it's ready to run! But this one I've already done for you. Find it attached to this post. Enjoy! BTW, I've sent you a PM. CFregIE698.7z
  12. Yes, several. Not usually from user code (yet, define "user code"...), not necessarily just from that era. Find and read: "Calling VxD functions from Win 16 (protected mode) code", in Matt Pietrek, "Windows 95 System Programming Secrets", chap. 6, p. 427-430 (1995); ISBN 1-56884-318-6. BTW, read also J. de Boyne Pollard's "On questions having yes/no answers".
  13. Congratulations, MDGx! That bug was a hard one to go down! I'm glad it was finally pinpointed and killed.
  14. If it runs under 98SE and has the "Favorites" menu, then yes, that's the one and only!
  15. Hi, Dave! Way to go, you did what had to be done! I don't undestand, however, why you've used FDISK+FORMAT, when I know you have part240 (=RPM, the Ranish Partition Manager), which would be much faster, because it lets you quick-format, instead of plain formatting. But that part is done already, so there's no use in going at lenght about it, unless it becomes necessary to do it yet again. And I do think you've already spelt out what comes next! So let's do it: Backup your registry. Backup the key directories (those Multibooter mentioned). and... From True DOS with HIMEM.SYS do the following: Load smartdrv (it's important! makes things go *much* faster). Use dos regedit to delete the ENUM key from the old system registry. Use dos regedit to merge the ENUM key from the new system registry. Cross your fingers and reboot and let windows start. If it doesn't work you may have to do it for each of CONFIG, ENUM, HARDWARE, and maybe DRIVER!!! So expend some time really learning how to use the dos regedit. Start here, here and here. Arm yourself with lots of patience and good reading!
  16. @duffy98: Check, please, what values does you registry have under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion (there should be none, but for the inevitable "Default", and this should be empty). @CharlesF: I'm glad my 2nd update is enough. I really thought it should be so. Now, as for your suggestion note that @="Mozilla/4.0" and "Compatible"="compatible" are unnecessary, because IE6 (our presumed true browser) already reports those values, so there's no need to spoof them. On the other hand the User Agent key is directly under the Internet Settings key, not the Internet Settings\5.0 key, but, AKIK, if the latter exists, it takes precedence over the former, so there's no need for us to use both (but no harm in doing it either). Let's let people test for some more time: if nobody finds any difference in the results obtained with the 2nd update and those obtained with the third, I shall withdraw the latter. @both: Thanks a lot for your prompt report! You both rock!
  17. Hi, duffy98! Both in my original reg hack and in the improved one, some posts above, REGBACK.REG has the following command: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent] "Version"=- "Platform"=-Now, the above command does not set any version for both IE and Win, it, instead, just exposes the true OS and IE, by simply deleting the spoof. Now, if you test it with IE6 under XP, it'll say it's IE6 on XP, whereas, if you do it under 9x, it ought to say it's IE6 on 9x. That's how it ought to work. If it doesn't, there's something definitely strange with your system. Aren't you, perchance, using also KernelEX? Latter edit: This version has been removed, as it prooved to be an overkill. Please use the one downloadable from post #148 instead.
  18. That's *precisely* what my reg hack does: IE reads it's version from the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Version Vector key. That's why it *does* work. See: Conditional Comments, at MSDN. @CharlesF: Thanks for the report! I think it's not necessary to change the HKU\.DEFAULT string. That's the default user... The current user should take precedence over that. And local machine ought to override both. I may be wrong, however. BTW, are you being able to access http://windower.net/ie6.html? All I'm getting is a # 403 error (Forbidden)... However it may use the HKU\.DEFAULT string (or the HKCU string), in case my reg hack doesn't work with that site. There should be another "User Agent" at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings, and this may be the more important entry (in case we find out we do have to spoof them also). In any case, to simmulate IE7 on XP, set "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)" or, for IE7 on unspecified Win32, set it to "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Win32)" But don't do it until you find a site that my reg hack doesn't work with. Then, do it and see whether it helps. And be sure to report your findings, please.
  19. Wow!!! We're back ontopic, at long last!!! Sure! Here is a new version of a simple way to change the user agent and version vector sent by IE6, using only the registry. In the attached file there are three .reg files: if you merge regIE8Vi.reg to your registry, IE6 will tell all sites it is IE8, runing on Vista; if you, instead, merge regIE7XP.reg to your registry, IE6 will duly tell all sites it is IE7, runing on XP. Don't forget to reverse the change, afterwards, by merging regback.reg to your registry, to remove the spoof, as some sites (like Windows Updates, for instance) need to know your true settings to work right. Of course, it all can be automated by means of batch files. There is no need to reboot, all you have to do is close all IE6 windows, merge the appropriate .reg, then reopen IE6 for it to work. Please report how well it works. UAVV.7z
  20. Do NOT propagate misinformation! ScanDskW and Defrag (both from Win ME, provided one also uses DiskMaint.dll from Win ME) are known to work OK with up to slightly above 850 GB partitions (= 26,389,392 clusters of 32 kiB ). Scandisk for DOS (from Win ME) supports up to 1 TB, if not more. Isn't that huge enough? Search the forums before you post. Start reading here, follow the links and the links in the linked posts. And, BTW, while partition size does matter for ScanDskW, Defrag and Scandisk, it is utterly irrelevant for the classic 128 GiB BIOS limit (= lack of 48-bit LBA support).
  21. Install Win 98SE, instead, using a bootable CD. Look for it on eBay.
  22. Try to install in non-ACPI mode, and see whether this solves your issue. See: this post and KB186111. Bear in mind that a space between the "/p" and the "i" is mandatory. In case it solves your problem, you might, or might nor, also want to disable APM, as well. If so, this post tells how to do it. I'd also recommend you precisely VIAHyperion4in1456v, not a newer version. Then remove the installed SATA driver, if any, and install instead Via's older but great SerialATA_V220E.zip, in case you have SATA, which you probably do. And read carefully all of the linked threads in nVidia GeForce and Win 9x/ME - Relevant Threads.
  23. Hi, Fabiola! Enter BIOS and see whether it gives you an option for booting a USB-HDD, and, if so, select it as 1st boot device. You don't want either a USB-FDD or a USB-ZIP. Be aware, however, that such options may exist, but that they also may as well not exist. YMMV. But it's worth a try. Good luck!
