Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers
dencorso replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Are they working? And your original kingston still works? Have you access to a XP or later machine? -
Fixed. Try again, please!

All isometric patches of the flash players do work. Probably even an yet unexisting version should work, as RLoew suggested in the post cross-quoted below: The most current version of Flash is 10.1.53.64, can you try it with that version? I believe it won't work, because "10.1.53.64" has 10 charachters, while both "9.0.277.0" and "10.0.45.2" have 9. This means one can substitute "10.0.45.2" for "9.0.277.0" without occupying any space not intended for that string (i.e.: it's an isometric patch), but cannot do the same with "10.1.53.64", because the latter is one byte too long. I found out, not so long ago, that such a non-isometric patch breaks Flash 7, so I'm quite confident it'd similarly break Flash 10. And, even if I didn't know about the patching of Adobe 7, generally speaking, non-isometric patches are expected to break programs, and usually really do so. You could always try 10.0.54.1. It has the right number of characters and should pass the Version test as it is an even newer Version (Future). Now, non-isometric patches, particularly of the internal string begining in WIN, which is not located inside the version info structure, do break flash.

Of course you can rename it. If you had read post #2 before posting, you'd know it, too.

I realy don't think the CPU mode switching causes any perceptible slowness... in fact, my ramdisk performance tests show them to be faster even than a hardware ramdisk, like the Gigabite i-RAM (which is itself already wonderful, BTW). While the XP only Gavotte is a windows driver, RLoew's non-XMS ramdisk is a DOS program, loaded before Win 9x.

Which things should I disable or remove? & a few other questions.
dencorso replied to natsumerio's topic in Windows 7
Now, on one hand, you're welcome to tweak into oblivion your Win 7 Home premium instalation: it's your machine, your copy of the OS, and you've paid for both. On the other hand, if you hate Microsoft with a passion, you'd be better served to switch to a lean, no-frills OS, like TinHat Linux. If that's not the case, take a long breath and calm down. There's really no need to put things always so forcefully and with such angst. Bear in mind I've just read all your posts, throughout the forums, so I'm not talking about just the latest one above. -
Protects us? When has wrp ever protected BLOATWARE 7 from viruses & such? Windows 7 needs tweaking, & I will not apologize for tweaking it. OK. Let's put it this way: 1) Nobody is asking anybody to apologize for anything. 2) The point of nuking WRP is taking control of the OS... Most people won't ever need it or want to, but it's great to know how to do it. And this is the first such description I find on the web. So, natsumerio, awesome! Keep on the great work! 3) However, I really don't like where this thread is leading to. Even if Kel was somewhat more emphatic than needed, and that he was, he has his points. Moreover, calling WRP an abomination, etc., wasn't really required and provoked his reaction. Hence, natsumerio, *tone it down*! And consider yourself warned! 4) Just for the record, I've merged a previous thread to the one natsumerio had just started, since they both were about the same exact subject, but I think everybody has already noticed it, by now.

The active copy of USBHUB20.SYS is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS. You should rename it (say, to USBHUB20.VIA), not delete it, just in case. Then you add the USBHUB20.SYS v. 5.0.2195.6891 from NUSB33. This should be all done in True DOS (i. e., after booting from a floppy). Other copies of USBHUB20.SYS may exist, and ought to be findable by searching, but are not the active one. BTW, if you are in doubt whether more RAM is beneficial or detrimental, the simplest way to establish it is by (I) timing some assorted events like opening IE to the default page, opening a Word document and/ or an Excel spreadsheet, and other things relevant for you to create a benchmark and then (II) removing temporarily some RAM and timing your benchmark again. Then you'll know for sure, specifically for your case.

Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
dencorso replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
What's the original size and what size does it have after saving as just English? I have downloaded it and it has the following characteristics (just to confirm it's the same file). SIZE: 2,384,896 bytes CRC32: 44FF4286 MD5: 234EFD764534EEC29B3CD1108082912A SHA-1: 3E20E6CE0EA0D182722E1C46CEC21DCEA8D68CC5 ... but I cannot find any Czech, German or Dutch text parts in it. Does my system have stripped them somehow? -
Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers
dencorso replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
This is the wrong place to ask for it. Win 9x/ME is an altogether different OS family than the one (the NT OS family) Win XP belongs to. Therefore I'm moving your post to the right forum (the Win XP forum) and transforming it into a new thread there. -

Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
dencorso replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Whatever it is, that happened after Word 97. My 97 loads the file, waits about 4 seconds and then the page counter appears and moves steadly until reaching the last page, then stops... regardless of how do I open the file. The averages and the medians point to the same fact: JorgeA's Word 2007 has a strange behaviour in two aspects: It's much slower when opening from the inside (counter-intuitive fact)! And "all 3 on" from the inside is the fastest setting, not the slowest (counter-intuitive fact)! I'm baffled, but I don't think any further tests are needed at the moment. We already have the facts. Now we got to muse over them. Slowly. BTW: Does Norton have any kind of Office add-on or plug-in that can be temporarily disabled through it's control interface (no, I cannot be more specific, because I'm asking about an application I've never even seen running up close)? -

Well, medians should be preferred, not only because they are easier to calculate, but mainly because they eliminate the influence of outliers (i.e., they are robust). And, since here we've got pretty noisy data (due to intervening processes), they clearly represent better the "true" value. Er... Of course, Pilate's "What *is* truth?" question applies here, so let's settle with "statistic truth", whatever that may be. In any case, JorgeA's values for "just 2 on" should be remeasured, because they are too surprising, in view of the rest of the data. Would you please do it again, JorgeA? -

@JorgeA: Now I'm confused. Your results make no sense, JorgeA, with all due respect. Which file are you using for your most recent tests, the one proposed by BlouBul or your original big file? @BlouBul: Since the median is the central value of the *sorted* series, JorgeA's most recent median value is 2:17 (= 2*60 + 17 = 137 s)... With all due respect, where are you getting JorgeA's values from? -
Wow! Great catch, Joe! It'd never have crossed my mind it might be writing to stderr... Of course, thanks to you, from now on, that'll be part of my hypotheses palette. Now, if I may suggest a trivial improvement to your great idea: c:\djgpp\bin\redir -eo java -version | find "version" > gotcha.txt
-
Did you do this: and nothing changed?

@ BlouBul: I took the liberty to correct your table (mod's prerogatives )... I actually didn't test on Win 98SE... It's been many days since I last had reason to boot 98SE, and since it's not even an NT-Family OS, I saw no reason to do it (although I can do it if you find it relevant, JorgeA had already done it, though). In any case, great! Thanks for creating a consolidated table of results: it sure helps trying to make sense of the data and also serves as a to-do list. Later edit: I did the missing measurements and updated the table. I have just "Check spelling as you type", "Check grammar as you type" and "Check grammar with spelling", and I turned on all three for the test, but I don't have anything like "Mark grammar errors while you type", although I have and did not turn on both "Hide spelling errors in this document" and "Hide grammatical errors in this document". So I put my result in the "Only two on" line, but feel free to move it down, if you find it warranted. -
Great! Congratulations! That big HDD was a tough cookie! When did the BSODs start happening? After adding USB20DRV or even before it you did already have them? You may be having BSODs for more than one reason... is the message in the BSOD's always the same?

Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
dencorso replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
I use Word97 (part of Office79) with all those inutilities disabled. I own 3 licences of Office 2007 Home and Student Edition. One is used by my wife, in her laptop. The other two remain unused. That's what I think of upgrading Office. I did install the 2007 converter on Office97 (it works, but that's undocumented) however, because people keep sending me .docx files... which I always convert and send back in Word97 or Word2 format (and they don't even notice, in most occasions). -
