  1. Did you try it from outside Win 2k... say, by booting a Win PE CD, then importing the relevant hive, adding the users to it, and saving it back?
  2. No! C:\Test7\mount\Windows\System32\config\Default User\NTUSER.DAT
  3. what's this meaning? Rogue programs? It means malicious programs, bad-intentioned apps, malware.
  4. I'd rather not touch the registry for this series of experiments. Temporarily replacing files is faster and more easily reversible...
  5. It may very well be my case. I intend to use dummy oemXX.inf files to substitute for the .INFs installed by some device drivers, so as to keep unbroken the oemXX numbering. Of course, I'll simply remove the corresponding .PNFs.
  6. What should be the contents of a do-nothing, minimal, dummy .INF? It must however run without returning any error. Please advise. ===== BTW, any off-topic posts shall be deleted as soon as I see them...
  7. I think that the reason "Why you [one] should avoid buying Windows 8" is that either 9 will be great (and skipping 8 will have been a wise move), or there'll be no Microsoft left after 8 (and, hence, skipping 8 will have been an even wiser move), and this may very well end-up being the case, at the end of the day...
  8. It's almost irresistible to post just: +1 Then again, it wouldn't be fair... jaclazDUCKEMOTICON_FINAL.gif is really superb! You do rock, Larry!
  9. A quick search yields this and this, which I believe are worth reading.
  10. Welcome to MSFN!
  11. @Larry: the images jaclaz's posted that aren't showing are all from reboot.pro, which is down at the moment (in fact, for more than 24h...) but should be back soon (err... one can hope, can't one?).
  12. I'm not jaclaz but, IMO the above one is just perfect! Glad my suggestion was useful.
  13. And while you're at it, which pendrive are you trying to recover? Does it have a known manufacturer and model, or is it a genereic (= brandless) one? What are it's VID and PID (even brandless pendrives usually have VIDs and PIDs)?
  14. Do you actually *like* 'em (the arrows, I mean)?
  15. It's more complicated than that... USBHUB20.SYS 5.0.2195.6891 now works for me, too. The only thing I can say for sure that changed between the time when it gave me the BSODs and now is that now I use RLoew's WDMEX.VxD, instead of WDMSTUB.SYS 5.0.0.6... And I get the analog results using yet another "Generic USB Hub" (USB 2.0, High Speed) from Genesys Logic (VID=0x05E3; PID=0x0608). I'll also test USBHUB.SYS 5.0.2195.7006 soon, but I bet it'll work, too... Question is, why are them working now? Also BTW, my machine's motherboard uses a VT8237 southbridge (part of which is a VT6212 USB controller).
  16. I don't recall any report of success with a geforce 8500GT, or any other 8xxx, regardless of how much RAM it carried. BTW, is it AGP or PCI-e?
  17. Definitely not rock bottom. Like in the Paradox of Achilles and the Tortoise, it's always possible to get still lower, I regret to say...
  18. Welcome to MSFN!
  19. And I'll keep agreeing with jaclaz (except for a small detail, of course ). I dont think that's the best option. But perhaps might be the right choice... Moreover, the thrown thing might very well splash on the wall, behind the ducking smiley, before it rises again...
  20. Yes... I guess I do... Moreover, jaclaz and I rarely agree in full (although I do think we both strive to, in many occasions) and this is jaclaz's request (which I tried to explain further based solely on my -- each day more -- imperfectly tuned crystal ball) so, IMO, he has the last word on any aspect of the project. I do, however, reckon such a "ducks" emoticon would be truly very useful, and I've never seen one such emoticon, up to now.
