That's probably the way to go... Just my 2¢, of course, too. Happy new year to both of you.

You all know I'm a big fan of XXCOPY, and that I consider it the best option for file-based incremental backups (as opposed to images, which can be seen as sector-based, time-fixed backups). You all also know that the last free version of XXCOPY which is guaranteed (by Kan Yabumoto -- the author -- himself) to work in 9x/ME is v.2.96.5. This snippet of XXCOPY's version history quoted below shows the telltale remark "Unicode support", which usually means "not anymore for 9x/ME", from the time it was originally published, and, more recently, Kan even added the "(lost Win9X/ME support)", to avoid leaving room for any doubt about it. This means we, 9x/ME users, are stuck with v.2.96.5 of XXCOPY. Later versions are UNICODE, and while Unicows.DLL (or KernelEx + Unicows) may enable one to use them, there's no telling which quircks may then lurk in them. For mission-critical tasks, like incremental backups, I do use the latest version while on XP, but on 9x/ME I don't trust anything above v.2.96.5! However, XXCOPY implements an aggressive update policy, so that, while always free for personal use, it'll nag one to update, as explained by Kan himself here: Now, while I respect Kan's motives, in my understanding, once one cannot update anymore because of lost compatibility, this nag should be disabled... Of course, anyone who disables it, does so on his own, and knowing fully well that no support whatsoever should be expected from Kan himself or anyone from the XXCOPY team. Moreover, as always, the standard disclaimer applies: It works great for me, but YMMV and I can guarantee nothing whatsoever about this patch, and about the use one makes of it. So, by deciding to apply it you fully accept that anything you do is of YOUR SOLE RESPONSIBILITY... Hence, if after performing this mod your pc morphs into a purple mushroom and explodes, causing a 10-day worldwide blackout in the process, you know you can't blame me for it! You have been warned. That said, here's a patch pattern exclusively to disable the nag on XXCOPY freeware v.2.96.5 (it applies to no other version but this one). 0) Get the free version of XXCOPY (you must get XXCOPY FREEWARE v.2.96.5 - xxfw2965.zip. From that zip one must extract XXCOPY.EXE and confirm it has the following characteristics: Size: 388,608 bytes Created: Tue Jan 08, 2008 04:09:06 GMT PE Timestamp: 0x4783F0A8 or Tue Jan 08, 2008 21:52:40 GMT CRC32: 5C139E0E MD5: 994BB5EE8E3317FADF6D978D97E6F858 SHA-1: D73B93A15A7CA4BA5A48427DB3BDBBC6162FBAC9 1) Download the freeware command-line utils.zip, from KanastaCorp, grab inside it just patch.exe and drop it into the \%windir%\command\ folder; 2) Download the xxcopypat.7z attached below, grab inside it xxcopy.pat and drop it into the same temporary folder one put XXCOPY.EXE in; 3) Rename XXCOPY.EXE to XXCOPY.ORI; 4) Start a DOS box, go to that temporary folder, and run the following command from the DOS prompt: patch -p XXCOPY.ORI xxcopy.pat XXCOPY.EXE All having gone well, the new, nagless version of XXCOPY.EXE shall have: CRC32: 7926035F MD5: 09783DA9A811BF596FCFA1CB0F531CDD SHA-1: 20E6A15819CF0639A8626AA5FEF0D12F483FB1C1 For those who decide to install XXCOPY for the first time, it's maybe easier to install the package as downloaded and then replace the XXCOPY.EXE file by the patched one. In any case, on installing XXCOPY FREEWARE v.2.96.5 it'll nag about it being a too old version, but this nag is another one, not related to the one addressed by the patch, and it happens just during installation, so it can be ignored and forgotten about. xxcopypat.7z

SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?
dencorso replied to dencorso's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Sure there is! You're more than welcome to create such content and PM it to me. When it reaches my hands, I shall gladly insert all of it, as a quotation, into the 1st post. -
Well, I, for one, would create a full disk image from the HDD as it is, before trying anything on it. So, in case all goes wrong afterwards, it'd be just a matter of redeploying the image, and all would be back to square one. Full disk image backups, no matter how long it takes to create them in a given machine, are the best advice I can give, and one that I follow personally punctiliously, whenever I lay my hands on a machine I intend yo service... Better safe than sorry, you know.

Hi, ppgrainbow! With all due respect, I read your post and I understood it almost fully, but the last line in it got me perplex... I've thought real hard about it, but I remain wondering what did you intend to mean when you wrote this: My only guess is that you forgot to add a question mark, thus it would instead read: "If so, how would it be done?" But, even if I'm right, I still remain struggling with "so" and "it"... I mean, "it" can be the partition resizing, OK, but what does "so" refer to?

SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?
dencorso replied to dencorso's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I don't know of anybody using the ACARD AEC-7923 SATA II-to-IDE bridge yet, so I cannot tell you anything about it. But, in general, people here is interested in the reverse process, that is, connecting a SATA drive into a IDE-only motherboard. That said, bear in mind that most, if not all, we know about such converters is in this thread, and some more info is findable in the links therein. But that's about it, I'm sorry to say. Our experience with such converters is very limited, in fact. -

Black (aka Colin Vearncombe) - Wonderful Life The first line in the lyrics from "Wonderful Life" are evidently: "Here I go out to sea again..." And the images in the clip do stress it time after time. Yet, it's remarkable how every site offering those lyrics always include the same error: "see" instead of "sea".

3TB disk seen as 746GB on Windows 7 64bit
dencorso replied to standingbear's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Secure Erase aka HDDEraseWeb is the fastest way to completely erase an HDD. It uses ATA native commands to do it, it's much faster than common wiping. And it should work right from DOS even if the BIOS detection isn't right (= whatever the size detected), because it uses ATA native commands. -
In my experience I have seen people watching videos and people looking at end results, but noone ever learning or understanding anything from them (or from them alone, i.e. without additionally reading, studying, experimenting) You can replicate the examples shown in a video alright, and a video can well be a support for learning , but understanding principles or learning a computer language syntax from a video? jaclaz

Thank you for pointing these links out. I tried the original version of the SHSUCDX driver by John McCoy and the current version, but it seems that it didn't work. Both current versions? Jack Ellis' latest version v. 3.03F (or the previous one, v. 3.03E) is, IMHO, far superior, to Jason Hood's latest (V. 3.05). They are quite different, nowadays, so it's perfectly possible that one works where the other fails. Then you have Jack Ellis' XMGR. Then there is Japheth's Jemm... If one has time for experimenting (of which I regretably have very little, nowadays), there're many variations to try, before giving up. Now, that said, I'm not familiar with FSHARE to advise you specifically about it.

There are at least two branches of the SHSUCDX CD-ROM Driver: Jack Ellis' and Jason Hood's, besides the original by John McCoy, and there are various versions of each of them. I'd try, at least, the latest version by each of those authors.

Correction applied. Thanks for the correction, M()zart, you do rock! In fact, most Bluetooth devices actually are USB 1.x (with USB 1.1 being about 10x faster than Bluetooth 2.0).

They are hidden by default. If you're working with XP on NTFS, you'll need to take ownership of everything from Documents and Settings downwards... Your life would be much easier if you were working with XP on FAT-32...
