That machine should do all right! Just use Xeno86's patched VCache.VxD, and it should be enough, since the machine has less than 1156 MiB of RAM. Or use Usher's solution if you don't want any patched files (works OK, too).

Of course: the support for POSReady 2009 hasn't ended, therefore that update isn't offered anymore, because MS update thinks you have POSReady 2009. Now, the XP_EoS_UPD - (KB2934207) exists only to annoy the user into abbandoning XP. It does not do anything useful at all. There's not a single reason in the world for one who has already decided on keeping using XP to install it, IMO.

Thanks for sharing your findings. Some of them do seem auspicious... Now, if both Metro and Search can be fully turned off and a decent 3rd-party utility like Effective File Search can be installed instead (nothing is needed instead of Metro, of course!), then MS is starting to get back to the right path... but I doubt we're anywhere near that, right now.

Done Err... but... if it's done, then why he still appears as "zrock" two posts above this one? I guess something went wrong...

Are you sure?.x.(.x.) Yes (.x.) No ... at least since 7 SP1, it's very doubtful whether MS has made anything better at all, but it sure made Windows look a whole lot worse!

You may also try an Athlon XP-M 2800+ (which multiplier is guaranteed to be unlocked): AXMJ2800FHQ4C... It shouldn't be very cheap, but probably it's cheaper than the AXDA3200DKV4D, and while being rated for 266 MHz, it accepts 333 MHz confortably, so that it can run easily at 2333 MHz (provided the motherboard allows one to set those values by hand).

Inasmuch as Vista ever just works, yes, I did. Caveat emptor, of course!

Vista should just work. I cannot see why not.

Maybe if they stopped thinking about "governance" and "empowerment" and concentrated on down-to-earth programming... But no, all they can think about is "mission", "vision" and other abstracts, alongside with some more cosmetic (for worse) changes... But, then again, it wasn't truly realistic to expect any swift surprising moves from an old stoned brontosaur like MS, was it?

+1. You rock!

I don't really know what to think about Win 10 (or should one style it Win X ?), but I'm sure there's room for an early twin thread in parallel to Win 8 - Deeper Impressions, more focused on Win X err... 10, but less technincal than any at the more specialized forums. So welcome to the new thread!

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date! Tell the people at Supermicro they're awesome! I, for one, I'm very impressed! That's how customer support should work, but dedication like that's beyond rare, nowadays, regretably. Good to hear from you. Cheers!

Microsoft is violating their own EULA for Windows XP.
dencorso replied to vipejc's topic in Windows XP
Well... Seems to me just a tad too much incompetence... I'd say it may be a convenient response policy, which can, if necessary, be attributed to incompetence, if and when challenged, but which may, otherwise, mislead some into letting go of XP... -
Microsoft is violating their own EULA for Windows XP.

But... if your issue was with activating Plus!, why did you query MS about XP? With all due respect, is that a novel variant of the Chewbacca Defense, or what? -
Well, AFAIK, one can only change language freely officially on the Ultimate versions. And I think this article by Ed Bott on ZD Net may be of interest to you. And this thread elsewhere, too. ------ @MagicAndre1981: I also think no key is tied to a specific language but there are FPP boxes with the message: "Activation Restrictions" "Distribution and required activation must occur in <named geographic region>", and there are other FPP boxes without such restriction. I own one 7 Ultimate of each type, so I'm positive about it. I don't know, however, whether there are similarly two kinds of OEM kits, but I think it much probable. See also: MS/GEO

I'm getting old and forgetfull but I seem to remember there was a wrong version dskmaint.dll in SCANFRAG, while the scandisk pacakage in Maximus-Decim BHDD31e [link] is complete and just works... I mean: dskmaint.dll v. 4.90.0.3000 is required by scandskw.exe v. 4.90.0.3000. The corresponding DOS scandisk.exe, OTOH, is standalone.

Can Windows XP be installed on Ivy Bridge Intel CPU?
dencorso replied to esecallum's topic in Windows XP
No, basically they're saying the same as I said: that one cannot install XP at all on any Haswell or later processors. Well, the Intel Core i5-4690K is a Haswell-DT and support for the on-chip Intel Graphics 4600 (and for Intel USB 3.0, too) is non-existing. Therefore, any system built with it will be very lame on XP (and a true nightmare for 2k, in case of interest in 2k). Now, as I said, my experience is with the i7-3770K, which is an Ivy Bridge. They're offering you an i5-3570, which is also an Ivy Bridge, and mounted on an ASRock H61M-DGS, which uses a Cougar Point chipset. Yes, I'd say it should work OK with XP and it has one PCI-e x1 socket on which you could very well add an add-on four-port USB 3.0 card, preferably based on a Renesas 720201 (which supports XP). And with 10 USB 2.0 (six of which on the back). The downside is no PCI connectors at all, no IDE, no floppy. Only you can say whether the lack of any of those items may be a deal breaker for you.- 28 replies

I think so. And if so, it begs the question: What about inserting another media, from another manufacturer and maybe even a different (but smaller) size?- 25 replies
