You rock, Tihiy! Thanks!

No. No easy solution, except move on to one of the latest versions. See this: Update-Win-2k-for-Skype. As for non-SSE2 CPUs... they're doomed, regretably... I'm in the process of retiring my much-loved Athlon XP machines because of this (well, I intend to keep at least one in running order, but out of day-to-day use).

It's OK. Take your time. Nobody's in a hurry. But it's great to know it's actually reached you, already.

Windows 95 USB support and the task of NTKERN.VXD
dencorso replied to Dev1111's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Yes. USB 2.0 was released in Apr 2000 and since Win 95 would go (and actually went) EoS in Dec 31, 2001, so MS decided not to bother with 95. Why? Intel is doing worse to XP since it went EoS, so what's the surprise?- 14 replies

Well... was the Fiat 127 much loved in Italy, in its day?

That's why steel cables rock: they may rupture and they may jam (both events prevent one from acceletating), but they cannot actually accelerate despite of you, like sensors can (although when they do so, they actually become senseless sensors).

How so? You've been given above a working link to authentic beta 1 (look at the file versions!). Wasn't that what you wanted?

Why don't you PM Tihiy? He may not even have it anymore, but you won't know it unless you ask him...

And it's yellow!!! Nowadays every car semms to be black, silver or white (and 'round here Taxis are white)! If the price is right and it's still in good working order...

Did you buy the Corsair? puntoMX really found you an irresistible offer: Corsair PSUs are great!

You can have Win 8.1 on C:, XP on C: and 98SE on C: !!! Once you create the 98SE setup and give any data partitions their letters, you can then disconnect that drive and any others and install XP in a seconde drive, then disconnect that drive and install 8.1 on a third drive. After that is done, and you confirm all three boot well standalone, you add Grub4DOS to the 98SE partition and create a multiboot setup. Since both XP and 8.1 allow one to set the letters of every partition except the boot disc (which remains C:), you then set all the data partitions to the same letters as they were on 98SE, and then give the partitions having XP and 8.1 the last letters, after the CD/DVD reader/burner. If both XP and 8.1 are on NTFS partitions, they won't be seen from 98SE, but you may have XP on FAT32, and if so it'll probably get D:, so that you may set the 98SE to D: on XP and on 8.1, so as to be able to reproduce, under XP or 8.1, the same letters for the data partitions.

Sure it will. But, as I said, were I you, I'd stick to 7 ultimate x64, especially if you're contemplating buying a new FPP unit intended for the machine. And take care of installing to a separate HDD, with the current ones disconnected, or your trial install will become a big disaster, because the 7 and 8 installs do like to mess up with all partitions. Careful planing beforehand avoids mammoth headaches afterwards, you know!

Thead split and moved as a new thread into the XP forum, which is the place to discuss XP. Moreover, do not hijack threads, however old they may be.

+1 @JorgeA: "meh" indeed... or maybe even "D'oh!"

You need the French versions, of course (in case they exist).

In general, yes. Very rarely there may be some low profile PSU, but if you are unconfortable with that, you can measure and post the dimensions of your PSU. As for the mounting screws, they are always in the same places, AFAIK, so don't worry about that. They're both el-cheapo, really, but since it's 6 of one or half a dozen of the other I'd go for this one, because it's cheaper and 400W. In case your issue really is the PSU, you could then mount the 400W instead for the duration, and you'd be better off than you started, but if not, you'd have a better test PSU at hand, IMO, and would have spent $15 less. @Trip & @jaclaz: please do chime in about this.
-
No. Not just for testing. ATX power sources are pretty much the same since at least 2008 and an used but working el-cheapo unit should be ridiculously cheap or maybe even gotten for free if you look around enough, and is great to have around for testing (I have two 450W no-brand for that). If you cannot get them locally, you'll still can find them at eBay or from recycledgoods (not so cheap, though, but probably more reliable). Now, if you intend to keep the machine going after you ascertain it's OK and undamaged, after, say, having it work normally on the test power source for at least one week then you could consider spending more on a Cooler-Master, Seventeam, Huntkey, Corsair or even HP power source for the definitive replacement (I'd say any of those other I named ought to give you much more bang to the buck than HP, though).
-
Yes, it is! Turs out CPU-Z does not find (or even care to look for!) the NX bit eve when on 7 ultimate x64! Hence, let's move on to the Flounder: try CPUID Explorer. I bet it'll find the NX bit in your processor.
-
Open the case and look for bad caps, just in case (you know, burst electrolytic capacitors). If you don't see any, then buy or borrow a used but known-working ATX power supply (that computer seems to use a common, garden-variety, 300W el-cheapo power supply, so anything 300W or more should do) and replace the power supply. If the computer springs to life, then you may discard the old power supply and call it a day, or even consider giving your machine a higher-end, new, power supply. If replacing the power supply gets you nowhere, then you do have a problem. My 2¢ only, of course.

No. That causes issues, and is unnecessary.

It may well be because you're on XP SP3 with PAE activate but DEP deactivated. I just checked my other machine, an Asus P8Z68-V LX having a Core i7 3770K, and CPU-Z 1.69 didn't find the NX bit... Later today I'll reboot it on 7 x64 and run CPU-Z again, then report back. My 7 x64 sure has DEP activated (I doubt one can deactivate it on Win x64, BTW).

In the famous words of Marx: "Hegel remarks somewhere that all facts and personages of great importance in world history occur, as it were, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as a tragedy, the second time as farce." Windows 8+ is the farce version. Windows 1, the serious one. Even the blue only 1-D logos used by both are akin (the one from Windows 1.0 -2.x is below): BTW, have you ever heard about the Gorilla Arm Syndrome? It sure applies here, too. Windows 8+ touch interface is disergonomic by design!
