Could always format and do an install using an official Windows XP cd. That should resolve all your problems. Also check and see if your applications have updates for SP3. Though they should work just fine, even in compat mode. Since this is most likely caused by nLite, moving to the correct forum.

At this point in time I'd say format and reinstall using an official Windows XP cd.

I always do a convert /fs:ntfs on my flash drives. Better overall in the long run.

I've heard running this program from Symantec is supposed to help.

I believe common sense would fall under tech mind. Then again after reading your post I'd question how much of it is common sense and how much of it is falling into the urban myths. I say this because of "relying" on such things as host files for malware blocking and disabling services.
