The onyl issue I have with codec packs is that they increase the chances of a blue screen. Aside from that, I have personally used KLite Mega Codec Pack, but rely on VLC media Player too.

I'd suggest buying Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for their real-time protection. They detect a huge number of these "codecs".

I went from Windows Me to XP and I loved it right away, just because it could handle games and everything so much better. When I made the move to Vista I quickly grew into it as well. Enjoying every bit of it and how well everything performed.

You could optionally put all of your important data on a home desktop (assuming you have one) and make the laptop school only. You may get better results making a new topic in the software section about TrueCrypt.

BitLocker is probably your best bet as you'll have support for it if needed. Though from what I have heard TrueCrypt is great too.

Indeed I did misread. Though I stand by my previous statement, that the best route is to use a VM. Some software I have developed I had to use a VM and was no about to format any of my machines solely to test my applications on 9x/Me. There are far more benefits (time, productivity, etc) running in a VM than doing things the hard way with dual booting a legacy OS.

Download VirtualBox and install Windows Me in a VBox VM. It's our best way to go.

Comodo Firewall Pro is the best there is. I uncheck Comodo AntiVirus and when asked to install the firewall, just tell it Firewall Only.

Go with avast, it's fast and lightweight. ClamAV has horrible detections, Avira has annoying nags/update popups, and AVG is bloated.
