  2. Outlook and Exchange work together like a charm. When used in an Exchange environment there's so much more that you can do, like share your calendar with colleagues, or allow others to look in your inbox and let them send mail on your behalf. Good choice. When you have an Exchange server the Outlook clients can choose to leave the mail on the server or download it to a .PST and optionally delete it on the server. If you download it to a .PST file on the local hardisk there's not much else you have to configure. If users simply view mail by loggin onto their mailbox on the server, the emails are always left on the server. You have the option to create an .OST file (Offline folder) which is automatically synchronized with the server when you log off or close outlook. If you have the users download their mail to a .PST file on the local harddisk and then delete the mails from the server to save diskspace on the server you might want to think about how the users can backup their .PST files in case of a crash or theft. Good luck & fun with your purchase.
  3. You could set up Outlook to use the .OST file. When your laptop is off the network you can read and prepare emails. Once your connected to the network those emails will be sent. HTH. 'nuff
  4. Have you checked your HOSTS file? \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc File name is HOSTS and it has no extention. The default contents of the file has a few remarks preceded by a "#" and the bottom line should read: 127.0.0.1 localhost What does yours look like?
  5. I experienced the same problem on all my PCs at home. Every time I'd start up my gaming system and jump right into a game, it would start stuttering like crazy after a short while to the point where the game was unplayable. Five minutes later all would be okay. On my Media system, I'd turn that on, load up a DVD and the first 5 minutes of the DVD were unwatchable due to stuttering. It had gotten to the point where I was really fed up with this and I started investigating. I noticed CPU was at 100% during the "Stuttering" mainly caused by one of the SVCHOST.EXE. I used ProcessExplorer and found the culprit to be "Automatic Updates." I have since then disabled automatic updates on all my systems. To the guy that said "what did you expect, 0%?" Why does a process have to take up 100% the first 5 minutes at the power on. Why didn't M$ give this service a lower priority? I mean, it's rediculous... You boot up your PC to "quickly" do something. Next thing you know your stuck waiting for for Windows Update to finish. Recently the company I work for moved to SMS2003. Now were experiencing the same issues on a LOT of client PCs. SMS uses Automatic Upates as well to install SMS updates. Some user's can't use there PC's for 2 days after updates have been spread via SMS. The SMS team have tweaked some settings and for most people its okay now, but there's still problems with some PCs having 100% CPU usage. I suggest you disable Automatic Updates service and manually install the updates if you permanently want to get rid of the problem. Good luck, 'nuff
  6. I haven't dug into Windows Vista yet so can't say much about it. Besides I'm quite happy with my WinXP Pro. However, I do have one issue with Vista I *can* talk about.... $$$ Me being an IT pro and wanting to have the best / biggest version, I'll be looking at Vista Ultimate. But at 400 Euros it seems priced a bit (understatement) to steep. But that's just my (poor man's) opinion. 'nuff
  7. yes, you'll need a WinXP Pro specific key. Just like the WinXP Pro and WinXP Pro Enterprise keys are different as well.
  8. Check WMP > Tools > Options > Rip Music [Tab] > Rip Music To This Location. What's the location for your setup? Under the tap "Library" > Monitor Folders [button]. Is the folder on your desktop listed amongst the "monitor folders" list. If so can you remove it from there. Does it re-appear on your desktop now?
  9. You might want to give Total Recorder a try, http://www.totalrecorder.com/ I've used it with good results: "Capture any sound played by a computer including live Internet broadcasts (streaming audio). Record sound coming through a microphone or played by an external device such as a tape player, LP player, portable music player, etc. Capture video from the PC screen or from hardware video devices; merge video with audio tracks into AVI files; edit video files without re-encoding using the Video Add-on. Record Internet broadcasts on a user-defined schedule much like a conventional VCR. Convert between different sound formats either directly or by re-recording. Normalize, split, cut, or join compressed audio files; edit tags; automatically split a long broadcast into smaller pieces and tag them. Process digital audio through add-ons: equalizer, audio cleaning, noise cancellation, automatic gain control. Process (for example, convert, normalize, etc.) a group of files, such as an entire folder, with a single operation."
  10. If you are using the Windows XP start Menu, and you see the Control Panel icon in it, you can drag that to your Quick Launch menu. No need to create your own shortcut as described above.
  11. @ N1K, LOL. As I have mentioned first, and others have confirmed, it IS the messenger service. Just install SP2 or disable the messenger service. Chances are there is NO malware installed on your PC. Please understand how the messenger service works and what can be done with it before telling people their answer is wrong!
  12. Try disabling the "Messenger" service from the services. Btw, the messenger service has nothing to do with MSN messenger. I thought the messenger service has been disabled as of SP2, not entirely sure tho. Regards, 'nuff
  13. That's called REALISM! 'nuff
  14. Hmm... strange... I use uTorrent (pronounced: Micro Torrent) and the Executable I download from the website is ready for use. No installation needed. 'nuff
  15. Whatever you do, don't take tips from a guy that tells you Nero 6 doesn't have DVD support.
  16. Hello, I am currently working on a little project and I need some files from a VISTA installation. However, I don't have the possibility to install VISTA myself at this time. The files should total about 5 - 6 MB, and it won't be more than about 35 files. Most of them are located in two different folders. I don't want to spread to much details at this point, but I would appreciate your help. If you are seriously interested, please contact me through PM. Thanks in advance. 'nuff EDIT: Not that many people running Vista, huh? I got myself a fast torrent of the beta. I'll extract the files from the DVD. Thanks ya'll.
  17. Hi Andrew, Did you scan the .PST with "scanpst"? Search for that file on your pc, and use it to scan the .PST file of the user. If you're still having problems with Outlook loading, try the following. Remove the current .PST from the user's outlook configuration, and add a brand new one. Is Outlook still taking long to load? If that seems to have done it, reload the "corrupt" .PST and either archive the emails in it to an archive.PST or manually move the email (folders) to a new .PST. Once you've removed all the emails from the PST that's giving you problems, remove it from the user's PST and he should be fine. Let me know if it helped. Sending me a PM would speed up your reply. I'm not too active on the message board anymore. Good luck
  18. LOL! So you must be laughing at 80% of the U.S. web users. Because MS still has 80% market for IE in the US. We Europeans like to laugh at you americans, too. But not because of your Web browser, you funny guy! N-Lite to remove ACNE. I thought that was funny and a good find!
  19. Chello Extreme (Netherlands), 20 Mbit down, 2 Mbit up. No data cap. I'm very satisfied! Very often I use the full 20 Mbit down! And almost always the full 2 mbit up. 79 Euro's p/month. Seems a lot, but not if you calculate how many DVDs I download! :D
  20. Hello mate, I think you may have some valid points in your previous post. If you would have taken a few deep breaths, counted to ten, and then posted, your post may have not been such a rant. I agree that the topic shouldn't be locked. And the words the moderator used were totally uncalled for. I would have liked to discuss some of your points with you. Again, on a few I will have to agree with you. For a few others I think there may be registry edits to fix (like when you insert a RAM disk and the menu pops up). I personally like WinXP a lot. In my opinion its by far MS's best OS. But that's just me. Cheers, 'nuff
  21. chkdsk won't do the job for you? It's included with Windows.
  22. You can't buy them or download them from Microsoft. If you have access to MS Select or Technet, you should find them in there. The ones that can be downloaded are the MUI for Internet Explorer, Media Player, DRM, MSN 5.0 and possibly a few more. I install all these plus the MUI for Office and Windows through a single .bat file. You don't need the entire package if you are only looking for installing 1 or 2 additional languages ontop of your English based install. hope that helps a bit. 'nuff
  23. I will agree with you that most "end-user" firewalls are utter s***e. Personally i ***HATE*** Zone Alarm. But "firewall" and "simplicity" are hard to combine in my opinion. I find ZA already WAY to complex for the average end user. I've also heard of a firewall called "Gauntlet". Supposed to be pretty professional stuff. Also, try this link: http://www.security-online.com/info/firewall.html Cheers, 'nuff
  24. There's a few good ones, but I don't think you can afford them. Try Checkpoint's firewall.
  25. uTorrent (pronounced micro torrent) for me as well. In my opinion the best by far. Azureus for me is a big no because it requires sun Java. uTorrent is only 150k or there about. I also noticed the comparison on Wikipedia doesn't show if you can create your own torrents with a particular torrent client. I find this a very handy feature in uTorrent. BitCommet has that feature as well. Not sure about Azureus.
