  1. To clarify, FF does support the general.useragent.override pref. But Basilisk, PM, and Roytam's builds of those also support prefs of the format general.useragent.override.www.amazon.com ... so you don't need an add-on to send a different user agent string to www.amazon.com than to everyone else. That's what VistaLover was referring to as SSUAOs.

  2. Greetings, all. Lurker for years, finally decided to join so I could ask the occasional question. Rather than yak on about myself [Boring!], allow me to talk about "stuff" instead. And since this is a Tech Forum, here are two lists of things, mostly [but not all] Tech-related, that are either personal likes or dislikes. You can probably tell more about me from these lists than anything else... ;begin wacky list Stuff I Like: NT 5 AutoCAD before 2010 Western Electric Vern Buerg's "List" EditPad DOS Tektronix UltraEdit32 Bell System Practices HP RPN Calculators Wordstar Professional 4.0 DEC Open Wire Air-Gapping and Physical Security Cannabis The PSTN on a real SDH Backbone [RIP] Personal Responsibility Dark green or amber text on a truly black background Wireshark European TV Phreaking/Hacking Truth Stuff I Don't Like: Windows 10 Social Media Subscription Software Marketing clowns who expect a Pavlovian response to the word "Cloud" Fools AutoCAD after 2010 BIOS Buggery Hype [Don't believe it!] Crowds, and the Madness thereof The Internet [It had its Day] Games HTML, Scripts, Beacons, etc. in email Browser Software that allows Fingerprinting The Tyranny of Sunk Costs People who use Title Case Text way too much in Foolish Lists like this one ;end list The owners of this forum are probably reading this list right now and thinking "Oh no, is THIS the demographic we are attracting now? This guy is a dinosaur!!!" Fear not, I'm sure that I am just an aberration. Jim ================================================== Please refrain from drinking the Kool-Aid.

  4. Kind of puzzling over this today. What is an "Upvote" for? What is it meant to indicate? Also what is a "Like" for? What is it meant to indicate? And what is the difference between the two? How are users meant to use them?

  5. Do you realize how many people will switch to Apple products when they try to get their PCs to cleanly update? A comparison of an Apple MacBook running Windows 10 to a Dell laptop running Windows 10 both about 10 years old and both running Insider 17760.1. The comparison time factor for update to 17763.1: The MacBook completed the update in 1 and 1/2 hours; the Dell laptop completed the update in about 15 hours. That put a smile on my face. It is fun when I smile. So yes, fun! [An that's no crap.]

  6. Many thanks @Sampei.Nihira . FF 52 ESR stopped updating NS at v5.1.8.4. I would have missed this update had it not been for your post, and this thread . @WinClient5270 , Huge thanks also, for creating and maintaining this awesome thread! And the same to those who've contributed to it .

  8. Linus is just taking a break. He made it clear in the announcement that he still loves the project. Linux itself would still be fine even if Linus were hit by a bus

  10. This post is just to summarize what I learned from the very detailed and involved DRM discussion about 80 posts back, along with similar posts from other threads: The NPAPI version of Google's Widevine CDM plugin will run on Vista but not XP, so it's no help. Stephen Fox has a PPAPI version of Widevine that will run on XP, but you'll need Chrome, not FF or one of its variants, to run that. The Adobe Primetime CDM plugin will install and run on Basilisk 52 just as with FF 52 ESR (although you need to toggle media.ffvpx.enabled to false in about:config), but few providers of DRM-protected content will use it. (I suppose you could try anyway, by spoofing an older FF version with those sites.) One last possible fallback is Microsoft's Silverlight. But as with #2, you'd generally need to spoof an older FF version that didn't support Widevine, in order to get sites to try to use it. (With some sites, such as Amazon Prime, you also need to spoof Windows 7 in your user agent string.) Do I have that about right?

  11. Dalai is no longer maintaining it for Vista. the guide from the MS answers forum for Vista is great - I was actually missing the KB3205638 user32.dll security update on my Vista machine even though I already had KB4012583 and other updates installed. after installing that user32.dll KB3205638 fix along with having the latest gdi32.dll/gdiplus.dll & win32k.sys fixes installed, I did a WU scan and it took nearly 30 minutes to show available updates [almost 200 of them] for Vista instead of taking several hours. KB4048970 is replaced by KB4056944 (Jan. 2018) and KB4015380 (atmfd.dll) is superseded by KB4056941.
