Findfast would cause this type of problem with floppy disks. Do not know if it also does it with other removable media types.

@WalksInSilence , do not buy Corsair (any items from Corsair) under any circumstances . It failed you already . It failed me a gazillion of times . You can leave the working modues as they are and just buy another matched pair to fit into other slots. Kingston isn't any better , avoid . I's suggest bying Samsung or Hynix made in Korea . Or something from Crucial, like Crucial Ballistix. G.Skill RipJaws are somewhat OK too . Try to choose low latency though.

You should try to match timing and speed of the memory, and size if you want dual channel. But to be honest, if the purposes you use the computer for are such that you wouldn't notice the memory running at a wrong speed, then it doesn't matter. If you are playing modern games or doing engineering or video editing, then you want to have everything match.

win9x have not NATIVE drivers for EHCI (USB20). unofficial ehci drivers is grabbed from 2k/xp and NEVER was optimized for 9x power management.

I haven't got a working system myself to know if the USB patches offered online fix the bootup issue, but I think 98SESP3 and NUSB33 are my best guesses. Make sure to read everything before running something tho, since I'm clueless

More than RAM, at first sight they seem more like disk issues. What I would do: 1) remove all RAM modules and clean the contacts (with compressed air on the motherboard and with a rubber eraser on the actual modules), rest them. 2) replace the disk (SATA) cable (no, buts, no whys, no perhaps, no what if instead, no nothing, just replace it with a new one) 3) if the errors/problems continue to happen test the hard disk (or SSD) with the manufacturer's diagnostics and if these show anything different from "passed" or "no errors" replace it 4) test the memory with memtest, as well if anything is different from "perfect", try one stick at the time until you find the one(s) that do not pass the test and replace them jaclaz
