That's because FxESR 52 gets by default the (supported) Polymer v1 (Pm1) layout; only versions of Firefox older than 44 (Fx <=43) are being served the Classic layout, the one to be retired in March; if you use a UAO on FxESR 52 to spoof it as Fx 43, you'll get the older layout with the deprecation infobar: BTW, Firefox (Quantum) versions newer than 62 (63 =< Fx) are being served the newer Polymer v2 (Pm2) layout, which, on the outside, looks a lot like Pm1, but on the inside it's quite a different beast... FxESR 52 and the UXP browsers don't currently support it; of course FxESR 52 isn't maintained anymore, but MCP devs are already making talk about "upgrading" UXP to support Pm2 in the coming months; Google have not yet indicated for how long they'll keep supporting Pm1 Pm1 is considerably more resource hungry compared to the out-going Classic style, and this fact alone will create problems for older browsers capable of handling Pm1 but which are installed on old hardware (which seems to be the case with many XP/Vista users here... ) Of course, the forced migration to Pm1 will disable many user YT customisations, in the forms of XUL extensions, userstyles, userscripts etc., which were initially targeting the Classic layout; sadly, it'll be game over for those older browsers (on, perhaps, even older OSes/hardware) that can't cope with Pm1 at all... Some relevant links: https://support.google.com/youtube/thread/27596769 https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/eyjy4i/misc_fd_youtube_is_removing_the_old_design_soon/ https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=23566 Chrome 49 has adequate support for Pm1, so if OP wants to continue using it for YT past March 2020, OP must: Install the User Agent Switcher extension from GWS: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher/kchfmpdcejfkipopnolndinkeoipnoia Set a "Permanent Spoof" for youtube.com domain (aka SSUAO) and pretend to be Firefox 60 (e.g. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0); then, every time a YT URL is loaded, OP will get the supported Pm1 layout without any nags about an unsupported browser: However, that workaround will, sadly, come to an end when evil Google decide to remove Pm1, too (which can be anytime, I hazard a guess and predict some time towards the end of this year) .3 points

The videos on both your links work fine here on Firefox 52.9.1 ESR. What HTML5 support do you have in your browser, is it the Adobe Primetime Content Decryption Module? That's what I'm using.1 point

Yes, the Tycho (platform) codebase was forked off Mozilla ESR 38 but (official) PM27, IIRC, comes with a native SSUAO for youtube; I don't have it handy ATM, but I believe it is advertising itself as Fx 42 to YT; low enough to make YT nag about it... I am delighted to report that YB 17.6.0.1633 (built on Chromium 58.0.3029.1633) gets served, as of this writing, the most recent YT iteration, i.e. Material Design with Polymer version 2 layout: (if you place the cursor on a video thumbnail, you get a video preview) Thus, I expect YB to work on YT for the foreseeable future; BTW, I composed this post using that very browser, so expect details of our exchange to reach President Putin's ears... (joking, of course... ) Best regards1 point

The HFSLIP 2000 FullPack is the best slipstreaming option around: It includes many updates not available through Windows Update, including post-EOL updates and XP Embedded updates. IE6 SP1 and DX 9.0c are also integrated. Just a few notes: -it works in Windows 10 but UAC should be disabled -run nLite for driver slipstreaming before running HFSLIP However, I currently recommend excluding the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 cab as a program (Vegas Pro 10) broke with the integrated version. You run the HFSLIP script after extracting it, where a set of folders is created. The HFSLIP FullPack has the same folder structure IIRC, so extract everything to the applicable sections and everything should work fine. The extended kernel and core cannot be integrated. Someone made an nLite addon for the extended core. Not sure how it fits in with the HFSLIP 2000 FullPack since that updates some of the kernel-mode files as well. I guess you could use the alternative way of using nLite by feeding it a file explaining file changes (look for posts from late April 2019 in 2000 USP 5.2 thread) or someone could make a package compatible with HFSLIP: The extended kernel could also be integrated in the same way I guess, but its customiziability poses a problem.1 point

This had all happened automagically so I hadn't even noticed, but I just checked about:addons and sure enough, uBO Updater is up to version 1.6.9 (presumably to handle the new repo) and uBO itself is up to 1.16.4.16 on my browser! I was noticing the referenced WaPo article worked fine on my system, but hadn't a clue why. (Not that I was wont to complain!) But anytime I install a new browser, whether FF, Chrome, or Edge, the first thing I do nowadays is install uBO on it, so this would explain it. (Internet advertising is so out of control nowadays that you just can't go without something to tame the chaos!) I've run into a couple of sites that require (or at least work better with) service workers, so I too have them enabled in about:config, even though the legacy uBO I use doesn't need them. But I restrict service workers to the sites that do need them with a line in My Filters in the uBO dashboard: *$csp=worker-src 'none',domain=~mediafire.com|~html5test.com There are probably a few other sites I should add to that line (mega.nz perhaps?) but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Ironic to say the least, given the article's content: "Don't use Kaspersky AV because the Russians will violate your privacy; let the WaPo do it instead!" I guess Jeff Bezos doesn't think he's rich enough yet; after all, he only has his own space program.... (FWIW, Elon Musk's space program is better though ) The current legacy version is newer, but it's numbered 1.16.4.16, so AMO thinks 1.17.4 is newer and "updates" it accordingly. Perhaps now that it's separate, JustOff should consider bumping the version number to avoid this issue. Meanwhile, you can turn off automatic updates for uBO, or you can install the "uBlock Origin Updater" add-on, which will force the browser to update uBO from the legacy repo instead.1 point

The most important advantage of the Classic Layout, especially for old browsers, is that it gets displayed without JS too, for at least seeing what the video is about, description, date, number of downloads, likes etc. And then it's possible to get direct video links with sophisticated userscripts. But with old system, old browsers, short on RAM etc, and blocked JS (which would only freeze anyway) it's a disaster now: neither Mobile nor "Modern" Layout shows anything ecxept gray fields or black box, zero text, and the direct embed-link only opens an error page. Which doesn't contain even descriptions in the source. At the moment my only one -lousy- workaround for any non-Classic view is to load the full (300kb) page source with Ctrl+U in Notepad++, then run Plugins > JS Tool > JS Format, and scroll down to almost bottom to finally see some readable text at least. How to get the video download links the future will tell. Perhaps using 3rd-party websites again, or someone can update the userscripts?1 point

Seen the same with other online emails besides gmail. You just have to regularly check your spam/junk folder on those webmails and make sure to mark things as "not spam" that are actually not spam. It happens with a lot of websites (especially forums) that I belong to that may send emails.1 point

== Modern Web Browser Emulation == = Overview = Emulate a recent Firefox or SeaMonkey web browser, tested in vanilla Windows 98. Performance is much too slow to be functional on a 1.8 Ghz system. Emulating a modern web browser needs a fast processor and lots of memory. This is just an experimental exercise and may not be practical. It would work best with maxed out hardware and kernel extensions for a newer, accelerated emulator. Even on decent hardare, browser configuration would likely need to be leaned out. Minimum host requirements: - Vanilla Windows 98 - High speed internet - 500 MB drive space - 2 GHz processor - 1.5 GB RAM Best suited for the following use case: - Want to run Windows 98 as the primary OS. - Have adequate hardware to run emulation. - Occasionally need a modern browser (eg. email, banking). [1] - Don't want to run a multi-boot system. - Desire to hack and try something new. [1] Use at own risk. This how to uses QEMU emulator with a Tiny Core Linux (TCL) guest, why: - Freely available open source tools. - No formal software install or registry changes. - The sofware combination works in vanilla Windows 98. - Low system resources, base TCL boots with < 64 MB RAM. - Small footprint: QEMU < 2 MB extracted, TCL 16 MB ISO. - Familiarity, previously contributed TCL patches and extensions. - Up to a 15-20 year newer code base that can run a modern browser. - TCL is actively developed and has a forum, wiki and reference book. To me the neatest part is that Windows 98 acts as host, while the guest runs code almost 20 years newer. Recommend experimenting with QEMU in C:\Windows\temp and moving files to a permanent location later. In vanilla Windows 98, 7-Zip v9.20 can be used to handle ZIP and ISO files. This example uses a 500 MB virtual disk for simplicity. Most is used to install and run a modern web browser and the remainder is a fallback swap partition. The default LAUNCH.BAT config file allots 1024 MB RAM to QEMU. Feel free to increase the virtual drive size and RAM allocation as hardware permits. This guide can be used modularly and customized. For example, use different emulation or virtualization software, replace TCL with something else. Modify the size or number of virtual disks. There are graphic QEMU setup programs. If your system is running a newer version of Windows then accelerated emulation should be trialed. QEMU and TCL come with many configuration options, modify as desired. These README_FIRST.TXT setup steps do not use or require clipboard or file pass through. Depending on use case this can be a security plus, using a modern browser in semi-sandboxed environment. If file sharing between the host and guest is desired, review README_FILE_SHARE.TXT. Note a very old version of QEMU is utilized, including unpatched bugs and security holes, use at own risk. This how to uses a DOS COMMAND.COM window and a Linux virtual terminal to perform most tasks, explicit commands are provided. In QEMU's TCL, use up arrow for previous commands and tab autocomplete when possible to ensure the correct directory or filename is being utilized. Use 'ls' to list items in a directory, 'cd' to change directory, enter 'reset' to clear a cluttered terminal. Familiarity with Linux and the command line is helpful. = Downloads = Download Win98_BrowserEmulator.zip (~16 MB) from below (no JavaScript needed). http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=13776965115608743747 Win98_BrowserEmulator.zip contents: - QEMU v0.8.2 (2003-2005 era) - TinyCore-7.2.iso (TCL, 2015-2017 era) - Custom QEMU LAUNCH.BAT - QEMU.EXE_options.txt - QEMU-IMG.EXE_options.txt Download README.zip from below (no JavaScript needed). http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=25326982961702772283 README.zip contents: - README_FILE_SHARE.TXT - README_FIREFOX.TXT - README_FIRST.TXT - README_SEAMONKEY.TXT Edit1: 08FEB2020 - Updated README.TXT. Yes, the "Classic" YouTube UI is less CPU and memory intensive, but Google is going to stop supporting the "Classic" UI. FYI, New Moon 27.9 and K-Meleon 76.2 are also capable of supporting the "Polymer" YouTube interface, they just need a manual UA override.1 point

Just to make people aware— my site has been down for a couple days and will continue to be for a few more. Gone are the “dark ages” of my unofficial browser installer needing my server to work, but if you try to download my installer and discover the link is broken, that is why. I will post another update when it is back online.1 point

Though a faithful uB0 user since its infancy, I don't consider myself an authority on it; besides, many other people here use it as their main adblocker, this is an open/public forum, everyone else (besides me) is invited to chime in and give a helping hand to those that might need it... My dear friend (and this is not meant strictly at you ), I, as much as the rest of the members here trying to offer solutions to other people's predicaments, post on a voluntary basis and to the extent other personal engagements (RL and digital one!) permit ; I'm not running a helpdesk service here, please acknowledge that, people ; thank you all in advance! Which browser is this happening on? I have to guess by a process of elimination, why are you being stingy in providing more details? FWIW, recent St52 builds do not connect any more on AMO to check for extension updates (and uB0 is not present in http://addons.basilisk-browser.org/ that is being checked); if one is at version 1.17.4[WE], then export all its current settings to a file, uninstall it, restart the browser and then install the latest legacy version from GitHub (1.16.4.16); import back your settings from the previously stored file... As for FxESR 52 and St55, these two browsers do still check for installed extensions updates on AMO; it is unfortunate that both the legacy and WE versions of uB0 have the same extension ID, so the XUL version gets updated automatically to the compatible WE iteration of it... ; but this is a known issue in these forums , it has been reported and described in the previous thread and solutions offered by several people, including both yours truly and @Mathwiz ... If you want to stick with 1.17.4[WE], then, for the WP site to work, apply the "fix" I already posted some posts above (which you appear to have disregarded : enable service workers! ) If you want to revert to the XUL (legacy) version of uB0, do as instructed for St52 - but make sure to first install the companion extension offered by @JustOff (a member of MCP and the Waterfox team): https://github.com/JustOff/ublock0-updater/releases/tag/1.6.9 This extension accomplishes two things: 1. Blocks update checks on AMO, thus preventing the unwanted update to the WE version 2. Directs update checks on the GitHub repo of the legacy version, making sure you get the latest legacy version; GitHub have a tendency of messing with this addon (by changing GitHub pages' source code ), so make sure you have that addon at its latest version, to be able to get the latest version of uB0-legacy. Then, for the WP site to work, you don't have to touch the service workers browser pref, the legacy version works out of the box! ADVICE to all: Your browser does have a bookmark feature, please use it to bookmark this post or any other one in this (long) thread you feel you might revisit later... My experience, based on using uB0 for many years, is that no adblocker is immune to detection, especially in recent years when advertisers and independent companies have developed dedicated anti-adblock solutions that are sold to webmasters ; it's a cat and mouse game really; uB0 offers an Adblock Warning Removal native filter list that you should enable, but, sadly, it's not enough Several other specialised adblockers have been created to combat the recent anti-adblock scripts (e.g. Nano Defender), but sadly, these come only as versions compatible with latest Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome...1 point

Hi Roy! I'm afraid that latest New Moon Version: 27.9.7 (32-bit) (2020-02-01) breaks Troubleshooting Information (about:support) completely. Extensions/Graphics info don't show up, 'Show Profile Folder' fearture doesn't work etc.. May you look into this issue, please. Second, get 'Tab Mix Plus and uBO might be making New Moon run slowly' spoiler. What does that mean... Big thanks to you for regulary updating the XP-builds anyway Cheers, bernd1 point

Oddly enough, in both New Moon 28.9.0a1 and Serpent 2020-01-17 with private browsing and only uBlock Origin (Firefox Legacy) 1.16.4.16 and 1.16.4.15, respectively, on Windows 2000, there are no private browsing-related prompts on the Washington Post (Privacy and Performance Die in Plain Sight) website. Instead I get closable but invasive prompts to sign for this and that newsletter! Update: just realized that I'm just mostly regurgitating what others said above. However, you should have the option of blocking the offending page elements by right-clicking them and then clicking "create" to make additional filters.1 point

I have always felt that extension signing by Mozilla (another move of theirs to ape Google Chrome) just gives the user a false sense of security, certainly the non-advaned ones; I found it a real nuisance myself, so I would choose to use unbranded Firefox builds and/or switch to esr/aurora/dev/nightly channel, where the signing can be disabled via a pref... As such, I applauded MCP in their choice of not implementing it in their UXP browsers... And I can't help remembering the whole debacle some months ago involving an expired intermediate certificate, that caused most installed Fx extensions to be disabled, with no possibility to re-enable... Though signed, one can't be 100% sure an extension doesn't include malevolent code, this is true for both the Google Web Store (GWS) and AMO ; signing is basically an automated process now, I doubt addon reviewers manually inspect every new extension update (for existing ones) along with the truly new ones on AMO... This is slightly OT, but now Mozilla have segregated signed extensions on AMO to "recommended-by-Mozilla" and to the "not-recommended" ones (probably ones poorly reviewed, if at all), and the prospective user should exercise caution when installing one of the second group... So much for the value of the contained signature... Returning to uB0, I believe the version on AMO compatible with UXP is still signed; as for the legacy version on GitHub, this is indeed unsigned, but, unlike you, I trust gorhill (a Canadian, BTW) more that what has become of Mozilla these days; the code is still open source, let alone when a broader community of developers/advanced users, without hidden agendas (I can't, in all honesty, say the same about Googlezilla), keeps a vigilant eye over it... There's always a slim chance GitHub hosted files (now owned by M$) get hacked, but this is true for everything hosted on line (even Moonchild's ftp archive got hacked...). In any case, I'm not passing judgement in the slightest, anyone is totally free and independent to make one's own choices here - what works best for you, as long as varied choices remain available... Best regards1 point

@roytam1 : In your custom UXP branch, the one you build the UXP browsers on, hence Serpent 52, you have included the following (upstream) commit: https://github.com/roytam1/UXP/commit/690fb973929d5560fc4546885b5f39330161be9e ... But we do still have this interface (i.e. the WebExtensions Addons Manager, WebEx AOM) in St52, so probably that should be reverted? I've used this on Linux and Windows 8.1: https://anydesk.com/ And just now I installed the Windows version on Windows XP without any problems. Phil1 point
